Origin and use The origin of the Gusocora valencia is a natural mutation in an Old clone valencia orchard (Orchard G5) in the Malelane area of Mpumalanga. The Gusocora valencia was selected for its seedlessness, good production and fruit size in comparison with the other valencia types. Gusocora is similar to the Delta valencia, but bears more consistently from year to year. Fruit Characteristics The fruit size is usually medium to large, and compares favourably with Delta valencia. The ripening time is slightly earlier than Delta valencia. However, the fruit ‘hangs’ well due to its firmness and high internal quality. The fruit shape is predominantly rounded and the fruit are seedless. The peel is smooth and develops a deep orange blush if left to hang on the tree. The fruit are juicy with a high internal fruit quality. Tree characteristics The tree characteristics of the Gusocora valencia are similar to Delta valencias but not as vigorous. Production is superior compared to Delta valencia (compared over a 10 year period). The Gusocora valencia is compatible with various rootstocks; trifoliate rootstocks like Troyer and Carrizo citrange, Swingle citrumelo, Rough lemon and Volkameriana. Climate requirements The climate requirements of the Gusocora valencia are similar to those of other valencia types, but it is especially suited to warmer areas where fruit set is a problem with the Delta valencia.
