By the end of this session, you should be able to build a page, set your course home page, and publish your course. This reference guide provides a comparison of key tools and clarifies new Canvas features or differences. Blackboard Tool Canvas Comparison Announcements Announcements Instructors can require a comment in reply. Students can adjust notification methods. Assignments Assignments Refers to assignments, quizzes, tests, graded discussions, nongraded assignments. Newly created assignments appear listed on the Assignment page, Syllabus page, and Calendar. Blog/Journal No Blog or Discussion Tools Recreate using Discussions. Calendar Calendar Assignment due dates are automatically populated. Content Area No Content Area Canvas uses pages, modules, and files to organize course content and materials. Content Collection Files Can upload individual files, zip folders or to reorder contents. The Files Page is accessible by students unless hidden by the instructor. Content Item Pages Can build course content with text, video, files links. Can edit and track changes, or allow students to edit content. Course Menu Course Navigation Menu Menu items can only be hidden from student view or reordered. Grades Weighted and point-based grades are supported. Ability to curve grades. Grade columns are only generated when an assignment is created. Speedgrader will allow instructors to grade or provide feedback on all submissions in one place. Displays submitted assignments, grading rubrics, and media comments. Can download submitted assignments or annotate submitted files. Students can view grades as percentages. Group Tool Groups Users can access groups using the Global Navigation Menu. IM/Collaborate Conference LTI Tool, Big Blue Button allows for webcam, voice, chat, white board and desktop sharing for synchronous communication. Module Modules Publish for student view.
