Tang Yuen-ha 鄧宛霞 is a distinguished performer of both Kunqu and Peking
opera, a true diva, the only Hong Kong-based traditional opera artist to have been
awarded China’s prestigious Plum Blossom Award. She trained in Shanghai with
the late Yu Zhenfei 俞振飛, one of China’s grand masters of the dan role, famed for
his performaces with Mei Lanfang 梅蘭芳. Ms Tang founded the Jingkun Theatre
Company 京崑劇場 in Hong Kong, and gives regular performances in Hong Kong,
throughout China and internationally, with visiting artists from companies such
as the Shandong Peking Opera Academy. Tang Yuen-ha is also currently a PhD
candidate in the ANU School of Culture, History and Language.
Geng Tianyuan 耿天元 grew up in a family steeped in the traditions of Peking
Opera. He is now principal artist with the Jingkun Theatre, and performs
regularly with Ms Tang in a wide range of roles.
Their programme in Canberra will include Ms Tang’s own kunqu 崑曲 setting of
a famous lyric, Every Note, Adiago 聲聲慢 by the Song-dynasty woman poet Li
Qingzhao 李清照, and extracts from Tang Xianzu’s 湯顯祖 great late-Ming drama
The Peony Pavilion 牡丹亭. Mr Geng will perform a ballad based on the famous
poem of farewell, Farewell to Yuan the Second on a Mission to Anxi 送元二使
安西 by the Tang poet Wang Wei 王維, often performed as a solo for the guqin or
erhu.
