Scrap CO 84 Sts.

Knit one row ravel cord.

Knit 6 rows main yarn

Put carriage in Hold position and all needles in Hold position (E) except the 4 stitches closest to the
carriage.

Start short rowing in this order:

First row 4 stitches are working, knit across and back

Put next 2 stitches into work, knit across and back.

Keep putting 2 stitches into work until 30 stitches are in work position. Add weights as necessary.

Take carriage out of hold position and Knit across all the stitches
Yarn: Lion Brand Woolease approx. 2oz
4.5 stitches and 6 rows per inch @ Tension 4
Size is Man’s Large (Medium size: cast on 74 stitches. All other directions are the same as for a large
size)

Put carriage back into Hold position and all needles out of work except the 4 stitches nearest the
carriage

Repeat short rowing on this opposite side until 30 stitches are in work position on this side.

Take out of hold and knit across.

Knit 2 more rows and then hang a hem. (Bring needles out to E position and loosen the tension of the
row that seals the hem.(t.6))

Knit 50 rows.

Cut yarn leaving sufficient length to sew up side seam (about 30inches)

Take stitches off on a tapestry needle. Run needle through these stitches once again and then sew
down the side seam of the hat.

I prefer the top of the hat to be less “scrunched”. In that case, I sometimes finish the top by
handknitting as follows (immediately after the 50 rows are finished) Take the stitches off on a circular
needle (size 4) and knit as follows:
R1 Knit 3 st. knit 2 together across row
R2 and all even rows Purl across
R3 knit 2, knit 2 tog across row
R5 Knit 1, knit 2 tog across row
R7 Knit 2 tog across
Knit one more row.
Run tapesty needle through remaining stitches and finish side seam.
OR
If you are proficient with the garter bar do the above decreases with the garter bar.

STRIPE OPTION: Knit 4 rows main color, Knit 2 rows contrast color. Repeat twice
Continue knitting until 50 rows
Transfer every other needle to the adjacent needle (2sts per needle) and knit 4 rows at tension 3.
