COLUMBUS JEWISH DAY SCHOOL

Fall/Winter 2014/2015
CJDS/CTA TO LAUNCH YAROK TOGETHER PROGRAM
Columbus Jewish Day School and Columbus Torah Academy are
proud to announce a joint Project called “Yarok Together” (Green
Together), made possible by a grant from the Education and Literacy Fund of The Columbus Jewish Foundation.
land at different times during the school year. Lessons will be
”hands-on” and will provide opportunities to integrate content
from science, math, Jewish text, art and Hebrew language.
Yarok Together will foster local Jewish Day School collaboration
and leadership in the area of environmental stewardship, with the
goal of increasing awareness of and community engagement in
sustainable agriculture and healthy eating.
The project, scheduled to begin in August, 2015, is an outgrowth
of a pilot program conducted at CJDS for the past two years. The
first phase will begin with the installation of vegetable gardens and
greenhouses at both schools. The gardens will be farmed jointly to
provide students with hands on experience in growing a variety of
foods and caring for the land. Students will then harvest produce
and physically deliver it to agencies that serve community members living in poverty, including:
•
Jewish Family Services - Holocaust Support Program and
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
•
Wexner Heritage Village - Seniors living in subsidized housing
at the Towers of Wexner Heritage Village
•
OSU Star House - A drop-in shelter for homeless 16-24 year
olds in central Ohio.
CJDS sixth graders bring fresh produce and other donations to OSU
Star House, one of the agencies that will benefit from the Yarok
Together program
Both CJDS and CTA will teach the Min Ha’ Aretz Curriculum to
5th and 6th graders to complement work in the garden. The curriculum, authored by Judith Belasco and Lisa Sjostrom of Hazon,
explores how Judaism relates to all the processes and choices involved in growing, harvesting, preparing, and eating our food, as
well as managing our kitchen waste. While 5th and 6th Graders
will be primarily responsible for planting and caring for the gardens, all students in the two schools will engage in caring for the
CJDS second graders water and weed the existing garden, which will
be dramatically expanded under the Yarok Together program
Yarok Together received generous start-up funding of $30,350 to
cover transportation, greenhouses, training, equipment and supplies. While it is projected to be a three-year project, the grant covers funding for the first year only. Support for the second and third
year will require documentation of progress and reapplication.
Year two of the program will focus on leadership and mentorship.
Jewish Leaders will partner with students from each school to develop relationships with local sites that serve meals to people living
in poverty in Franklin County and to develop and implement a
plan to inform the Jewish community about the general needs of
these agencies.
Sarah Miga of the Mid-Ohio Food Bank shared survey results that
underscore the need in Central Ohio. A 2013 survey indicated 94%
of Mid-Ohio Food bank recipients reported that access to fresh
produce increased their vegetable and fruit intake by 2 1/2 cups
per day. The organization would like to see the availability of fresh
produce increase to fulfill the demand for nutritious and wholesome food.
Both Columbus Jewish Day School and Columbus Torah Academy are excited to educate our students about our obligations to
our planet, and to the needy in our midst. Rabbi Abraham Joshua
Heschel wrote, “In our relation to the immediate, we touch upon
the most distant. Even the satisfaction of physical needs can be
a sacred act. Perhaps the essential message of Judaism is that in
doing the finite we may perceive the infinite.” Yarok Together will
provide students with the opportunity for hands-on work that directly benefits others, as well as an understanding of the Jewish tradition that informs those obligations.

I observed some students using binoculars to identify and catalog the
different species of birds visiting our property. The data they record
will be sent to Cornell University as part of their national program of
Citizenship Science. All of this was happening over the course of one
brief hour. You can imagine what we accomplish in a day!
HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Chevre / Friends,
As I write this, it is a busy morning at CJDS.
Students are happily engaged in learning. Walking around the school, I saw our
youngest children working together with
their teachers using math manipulatives to
illustrate their understanding of place value
in large numbers. Some first graders were
learning new tunes for “Shalom Alechem”
and others were working in English on reading and writing activities
in small groups. As I walked down the hall, I was delighted to see one
of our alumni, Adam Soll, working with students on Hebrew language
activities. Eran Rosenberg was pleased to have Adam here during his
break from college and we could see how the children loved learning
with him. The art room was bustling with energy as sixth grade students created illustrations for a book they are reading in Shiluv (an
integrated general and Judaic Studies Language Arts class). They focused on value of light and dark as they completed their intricate pencil drawings. The fifth graders were learning new math skills with their
teacher and a small group was reinforcing the knowledge by using a
website that provides more complex problems as they progress. Earlier,
Our innovative, egalitarian educational programming truly provides
an outstanding foundation for these elementary students. The integration of Judaic and general studies subjects is unique to CJDS and the
achievements of our alumni as they leave our school illustrates clearly
the value of our curriculum.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our
donors. Your gracious gifts have enhanced the lives of hundreds of
children in our Columbus area and we are deeply grateful for your continued assistance.
It would be my honor to give you a personal tour of CJDS. We have
grown and changed and I delight in sharing the excitement with visitors.

A MESSAGE FROM THE
CJDS BOARD PRESIDENT
In August of 2014, I was honored to become the president of the Columbus Jewish Day School (CJDS) Board of
Trustees. I am hopeful that the past three and a half years serving on the Board has prepared me for this position.
My children, Rose (5th grade) and Gabriel (2nd grade) inspire my involvement. I have witnessed first hand how
they have grown academically, socially and emotionally in the compassionate arms of CJDS teachers and staff.
CJDS is more than their school; it is their family and their second home. This is why I continue to volunteer and
will dedicate my term to strengthening and growing our school as we enter into our 18th or “chai” year!
I am so pleased to announce that our 2015 Wisdom of the Heart honorees are the CJDS Faculty and Staff. We
recognize their ongoing commitment to academic excellence. CJDS is fortunate to have talented and dedicated
professionals to teach and nurture our students. Many of our faculty and staff have been with the school since
its founding.
Our teachers develop and execute an innovative curriculum that is tailored to the school’s unique mission. They integrate challenging academics
with Judaic studies to create a rich learning environment. The event will also allow us to showcase the K-6 robotics, environmental stewardship,
service learning and intergenerational programs that all contribute to making CJDS an exemplary, cutting edge school.
Wisdom of the Heart will be held on Sunday, April 19th from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the school, 150 E. Granville Road, New Albany. Please
contact Julie Fishman, CJDS Development Coordinator, at [email protected] or (614) 939-5311 if you wish to serve on the host committee,
place an ad in the program, donate to the silent auction or purchase tickets, and look for your invitation in the mail in February.
Thank you for your continued support of CJDS. I am proud to be a part of a team that inspires and motivates the next generation of community leaders. I hope you will join me as we prepare for Wisdom of the Heart and commemorate our “chai” year next fall. We have so much to
celebrate!
Sincerely,
Sara Zeigler

CJDS Uses Technology to Enhance Learning
When 5th grade General Studies teacher Shannon Knisley was asked
recently how her class uses technology, she answered, “The better
question is, when are we not using technology?” From Smartboards
in the classroom to Chromebooks on desktops to learning longdistance, CJDS teachers and students are using technology in a
myriad of ways to enhance learning across the curriculum.
We recently spent some time with fifth graders to better understand
how technology is integrated into daily classroom activities. Each
student has a Chromebook, allowing them to access different
learning sites. In Math, students use Khan Academy and IXL to
hone their skills. Khan Academy offers videos showing different
strategies for solving math problems and provides practice and
immediate feedback. IXL is a standards-based math practice

to become more challenging once students master a skill.
In language arts, students use Google docs for writing essays and sharing their
documents with their classmates for peer editing and with their teacher for
comments. Students use the internet for researching across a variety of disciplines.
The fifth grade Social Studies program is completely online. Students use Google
docs to create presentations and share what they have learned. They use online
programs to create newspapers to supplement study units and demonstrate a
deeper understanding of the material. In science, while learning about sound, the
students researched the best location for a bat house that was donated to the school
and then made a proposal, with research to support their findings, as to where the
bat house should be placed.
Some fifth grade students

Tomorrow’s Genius to enhance
their Hebrew learning. The
program provides online distance learning with teachers from Israel. It allows
the students to have a very authentic experience with the Hebrew language, with
instructors in their homes halfway across the world, discussing, for example, the
weather in Israel at that moment. The lessons, which are based on a curriculum
developed jointly between CJDS teacher Eran Rosenberg and the instructors
in Israel, are conducted entirely in Hebrew, following the Ivrit b’Ivrit approach.
Students alternate online learning Georgia and Jacob work on an assignment using
with classroom lessons, allowing their
their Chromebooks
teacher here to reinforce and review.
Despite the distance, the online lessons are interactive: students can highlight, write
and erase on the screen, watch short videos, record themselves speaking and converse
with the teacher and their classmates as a group. Using a hebrew keyboard, students can
also message back and forth privately with the teacher. When asked about how he likes
learning online, fifth grader Zachary replied, “The technology is really cool and it’s fun
to be able to see and talk to my classmates and the teacher in Israel at the same time.”
Zachary shares a joke with his Hebrew
teacher in Israel
The technology allows the classroom teacher to manage a range of hebrew abilities in
the classroom by providing enhancement for students who are moving ahead quickly, or
additional help for those who need it.

Thank you to many of our Grandparents who responded to the Mezuzot Campaign, Co-Chaired by
grandparents Steve Edelstein and Jeff Grossman. We have been able to raise over $21,000 from your
generous gifts. With these funds, we are planning to purchase brand new colorful Mezuzot and affix
them to each and every doorpost at CJDS. These new Mezuzot will remind our students each day of
their connection to their grandparents and their Jewish heritage.
We will have a dedication ceremony on April 17th to honor our CJDS grandparents as we unveil
these new Mezuzot and plaques listing the names of those grandparents who have contributed. If
you would still like to contribute but haven’t already, please contact Julie Fishman, CJDS Development Coordinator at (614)939-5311 or [email protected] to make arrangements.
