There will be an Elite Mile (invitation only). One Elite Mile race for Men and one Elite Mile race for Women. There will be a Boys High School Mile and a Girls High School Mile. All Mile heats after the high school races will feature men and women of similar ability racing four laps entirely on the track. Seeding into heats is based on your previous best 5K time during the year leading up to the 2015 Classic. You must provide proof on this application that you can run better than a 9:00 minute mile. The organizers of the Classic Mile have created the 9:00 minute mile limit in the interest of time management. A good track meet runs smoothly and quickly with one race immediately following another. In America, the Mile is deeply embedded in our culture and history. We are one of the few countries in the world that still uses the mile as a distance measurement and thus, as a certuries old result, Americans think, speak and relate in miles not kilometers (“How many miles did you run today?” or “I averaged five-minute miles in my race”, etc.). In short, Americans 'get' the mile, not the 1500 meters. Because the 1500 meters, or worse, the misfit 1600 meters at the high school level do not have the same historical significance and cultural, media and promotional value as the mile. There is no 1500 meter equivalent to Roger Bannister’s historic and still revered first sub-4minute mile; put simply, the Mile is iconic, classic and timeless. Americans also understand the mystique of the Mile, particularly the sub-4 minute mile. It is time we Bring Back the Mile - American’s distance! Join the Movement.
