20 Tips to Improve All of Your Sewing
Celia Banks This is a 1 hour presentation of techniques and ideas that will help
sewers to achieve professional results. It covers areas such as
choosing and preparing patterns, pre-shrinking suitable fabrics and
selecting appropriate interfacings. There will be suggestions for
streamlining the sewing process and obtaining a professional finish,
using good pressing techniques and tools. A list of references and
resources will be provided at the end of the workshop.

In this fun workshop you will learn how to make stitched and gathered
shapes such as petal and loops which can be applied to a base fabric
to create exciting 3D textures and patterns. You will make a series
of small samples. T he techniques are simple and only require hand
sewing skills so this is suitable for all levels. This workshop introduces
techniques from Ruth Singer’s new book Fabric Manipulation, 150
Creative Sewing Techniques.

Beaded Braid Key Ring

Learn basic braiding techniques while using hand-dyed pima cotton
threads and Japanese beads to create a key ring – learn how to set up
the braiding disk, how to add beads to a braid and how to finish your
braid. Kit includes a mini Kumihimo disk, threads, beads and findings.

Stitch a beautiful beaded motif on to canvas. Learn the basic
technique and see how the gorgeous “bead soups” kick up your
colourwork and how the textures add scrunch! You will be able to
use your work to embellish jeans, totes, cushions, bags, anything. It is
glamourous, sassy and simple. All levels welcome, including children
aged 12+

Lynne Sharpe
Join textile artist Lynne Sharpe of The Make
It Room and learn how to make an amazing
wet felted bowl. This 2-hour workshop
is run in conjunction with Blooming Felt
whose beautiful supplies are used in this
class. Discover how to use Merino fleece to
make a free standing bowl using wool, soap
and water. Suitable for those with a basic
knowledge of wet felting. Suitable for intermediate level.

Make Do and Mend
Learn the basic skills of crochet during this two hour workshop and
leave with the knowledge and confidence to continue your new
passion! Crochet hooks and wool will be provided.

Bengala - Dye with Earth
Toyomi Harada
Bengala, a mud dye made of iron oxide is
the ultimate eco dye colour from the Earth.
Traditional Japanese Bengala dye is only
red, the Shinto Shrine colour although
recently a variety of colour were invented
in Japan. You can dye without hot water
or any heat, it holds up against ultra-violate
rays, so the sun doesn’t cause it to fade. In this workshop, suitable
for all levels of students and children, you will prepare and dye 2
sample fabrics. You can learn ITAJIME (Japanese wood block dye)
and KATAZOME(Japanese Stencil) Toyomi Harada will provide
all necessary materials, Bengala dye and ITAJIME tools or stencil
patterns needed.
Practical Project
Beyond the Basic Pattern: 20 More Sewing Tips
Celia Banks This 1-hour presentation and demonstration of handy tips and
processes will cover topics such as moving and shaping darts and
fitting waistbands and contoured yokes. There will be overview of
how to quickly attach zips, how to prevent some common sewing
mishaps and things to consider beyond the basic pattern. The session
will include suggestions for making the most of a pattern and ideas for
developing your fashion sewing skills. Celia is an Associate Educator
with the Palmer Pletsch company and specialises in teaching people
to get the best fit from commercial patterns.

Louise Batten
Learn how quick, cheap and easy it is to
print your own fabric at home. You will be
taught how to make your own stamps and
print a fat quarter of fabric to take home.
Louise will show you a range of suitable
printing mediums and display a range
of items made with hand printed fabric.

Blossom: Spiral Wire Necklace

This unusual necklace requires the
minimum of skills and creates a delightful,
wearable piece. Create your own beads
from spirals of wire and intersperse these
with pretty feature beads. In the hour long
workshop you will learn how to twist wire,
make ‘beads’, threading and completing
your necklace. Come and start an exciting and unusual new hobby!
Don’t worry if you are a complete beginner as Kath will teach you all
the skills required. Children aged 12+ also welcome.

Chicken Scratch Embroidery

This form of embroidery, often referred to
as the Lace Stitch, is traditionally worked
on gingham fabric, using several interesting
stitches, including Tenerife Flowers. When
the stitches are combined together you can
create many lovely designs. Come and have
fun starting on a pretty and practical pin
cushion, but be warned - this is completely addictive!

Knitted in wire, this attractive bracelet is
beaded with a mixture of beautiful beads.
A variety of sizes, shapes and colours of
beads adds to its charm. In the hour long
workshop you will learn how to knit in wire,
discover its differences and limitations
compared to yarn but also its advantages,
and start an exciting and unusual new hobby! The skills required
are being able to cast on, knit and cast off. Don’t worry if you are
a complete beginner as Kath will teach you all the skills required.
Children aged 12+ also welcome.

Explore the magic of mixing colours and create surprising effects with
coloured pencils on paper.

This is a 2 hour practical workshop during which you will make
samples of a centred, a lapped and an invisible zip. A zipped bag kit
will be provided, together with handouts for future reference. We’ll
be using a fast and foolproof method, without pins or tacking, using
basting tape and Scotch Magic 3M tape. Attendees do need to be
able to use a sewing machine for straight stitching. 2-hour workshop
Contemporary Mini Sampler
Janice Peters
A small contemporary design using cross
stitch with some blackwork, other counted
thread stitches as well as beads and metallic
thread. The aim of this session is to help
participants take the next step from straight
forward cross stitch and blackwork and
to be able to add extra embellishments
to their work. The design this year will
in sampler style and each kit will include
written instructions for completion at home.

Craftivism: Make A Mini Protest

A spoonful of craft helps the activism go
down. Hosted by Founder of the Craftivist
Collective, Sarah Corbett who is seen as
the one of the leading spokespeople in the
renaissance of the Craftivism movement.
Craftivism combines activism and craft
and provides a create outlet for people to express their thoughts and
concerns on social injustices in a non-threatening way, provocative
way whilst at the same time ‘Making Change’ one stitch at a time
through their actions! You will learn how to make a Mini Protest
Banner using cross-stitch and hand embroidery methods, explore
and discuss the benefits of craftivism for the maker and viewers
and how it can create change. All participants will take home in a
small bag to continue your craftivism piece at home and become a
craftivist! Practical Project

This workshop is the perfect project for
the ever-eager curious stitcher! Do come
and learn the simplest and inexpensive
way to stitch Broderie Anglaise eyelets on
whitework linen fabric. You will learn to
stitch different sizes of eyelets to give you
the opportunity to practice and challenge
yourself until you achieve the perfect eyelet. Also you will see
professional and hand made stilettos for whitework and see different
fabrics, needles and threads that you can use for your own projects.
The final item will be made as a Lavender Sachet to treasure at home
for many years to come. We will be working on a 4 inch ring frame.
Please do bring your stitching glasses if you think you will need them,
also do come with your hands freshly cleaned as we wish you to

Machine sew a panelled skater skirt made from recycled materials.
Each panel of this ‘SKATER’ skirt will be made from different fabrics
that have been collected from recycled products or from end of
production wastage. This is about saving the environment while
making an up to date usable product. This skirt is very popular at the
moment and is all the rage. The waistband will be made of elastic for
easy fit. Each panel will be cut and simply sewn together, the art to
this will be in the use of a variety of fabrics that could either clash or
match. The types of re-usable fabrics could include, old/vintage tea
towels, pillow cases, old jeans. Suitable for all levels including children

Machine Sew Aromatic Creature

Libby Rose This workshop is mainly aimed at adults
looking to learn activities to do with or
make for children and for children 5+ to do
themselves. The finished creatures are at
least 35cm in height and are made with an
aromatic filling to aid sleep or to stimulate
kids brains at play. During this 1.5 hour session, we will choose
the outline of a creature from a selection available and machine
sew the main body together. Examples of creatures are: Crazy-Cat,
Dangerous-Dino, Whacky Wale & Sleepy Owl. We will then add
extras such as buttons for eyes or use embroidery thread to do simple
stitch shapes for facial expressions. We will also have some fun with
Bondaweb to add detail before stuffing the body with stuffing and a
choice of natural herbs. More additions such as floppy ears, tails etc
can also be added at this point. Suitable for children age 5+ and adults

fabrics and threads that have been naturally
dyed from flowers, plants and roots
prepared by the tutor to make a notebook
jacket. You will use the traditions of crazy
patchwork, cutting fabrics in an irregular
pattern and then using stitch to secure them to a background with
a modern contemporary twist. During the workshop you will stitch
the outside of the book jacket using embroidery stitches taught by
Angela. You will be given an A6 notebook and clear instructions
of how to complete your book jacket at home. All materials will be

From the nineteenth century our forbears
used mill waste or old clothes to make
warm rugs for the bed and floor. Learn
how to push small fabric pieces through
hessian backing with half a clothes peg, like
granny used to, then use a ‘bodger’ rug tool
to achieve the same shaggy effect more quickly. You will be able to
use this traditional technique, Progging, to make rag rugs and other
projects of your own design later, at home. Granny called it Proddy,
now it’s called Upcycling! (Can be addictive. Suitable for any level

Stumpwork: A Fishy Tale

Let me introduce you to Connie and Charles, two little stumpwork
fish swimming around in their underwater world full of colourful coral,
starfish, anemones and seaweed. Stumpwork is a form of embroidery
where the elements are padded and raised from the background
to give a 3D effect. We will be using very simple stitches, unusual
materials and padding techniques to recreate an under water scene.

Tatting: Beaded Scissor Keep Barbara Murdock
This 1.5 hour session will enable tatters,
who have already mastered the original
stitch and can make a ring, to develop new
techniques. A tatted piece is made up of
double stitches each one a larks-head knot.
The stitches are placed in intricate patterns
of chains and rings to make the lace effect
you see. Traditional tatting is done using
one shuttle and a ball of thread, but we will use two shuttles which
increases the possibilities in both form and pattern design. You will
make a small motif which can be used as a scissor keeper using Perle
thread. You will learn how to incorporate beads into the design and
how to make split rings thus avoid having to cut thread and re-join
onto work to start a new row. Suitable for intermediate level.

natural fermentation natural Indigo vat are
endless and the resulting fabrics are to ‘dye

who will be taught in a structured way. You will prepare and dye 2
sample fabrics (one cotton and one silk) with SHIBORI (the inventive
art of Japanese shaped resist dyeing) and Vivien will share her
knowledge of preparation and maintenance of a natural fermentation
Indigo vat, offering you a sound knowledge and provide a solid
foundation upon which future developments could
be made.

Tissue Fitting - Better Fit for Busy People

This is a one-hour practical demonstration and explanation of the
principles and techniques of tissue-fitting commercial sewing patterns
for the best results, using the Palmer Pletsch system. You will be
shown how to measure effectively so that the correct size of pattern is
chosen and then be given an overview of the process, using a specific
fitting pattern, gingham bodices and fashion patterns. There will be
demonstrations of the most common alterations and examples of
many useful tools. The session is suitable for all abilities and will help
you gain confidence in altering patterns.

Use 2 traditional rag rug techniques on a
small scale to make a one-off brooch: HOOK
yarn or fabric strips up through backing to
form a loopy flower centre. Then PROG
the petals by pulling snippets of fabric to
surround the loops. Stitch a circle of felt
on the back, then a brooch fastening and
you have a corsage! These techniques could be used later for larger
projects like rugs or hangings. Suitable for any level including children

Inspirations, by Isobel Hall contains
many techniques for mixed media and
stitch and amongst these it features
two new products manufactured by
Colourcraft. Soft Form relief paste
has many applications all of which
are suitable for machine and hand
embroidery. The Soft Flow Clear
Medium (washable PVA) can be used as glue but it can also
become an exciting medium for creating a stitchable skin. The
versatility of Soft Form relief pastes and washable PVA will be
explained and explored on this exciting demonstration using
these latest products. Fabrics made using these products have
been made into Saxon reliquary boxes, handmade books and
wall art and these will be on show throughout the stimulating
