ClaySpace Ceramic Arts Center is a non-profit studio located in Chicago's western suburbs and is a home to a
community of 55 Resident Artists. We seek to inspire creativity, foster self-discovery, promote learning and nurture
appreciation of art through our classes, workshops and special events. Our Gallery is full of art for purchase and
inspiration.

* These classes come with FREE three-hour Open Labs -- one for each week of class. Additional Open Labs can be purchased. Open
Labs are only given for classes (not for workshops). Please consult your instructor for dates, times and to purchase additional
Open Labs.
CERAMICS CLASSES
Throwing on the Wheel*
You will be challenged to not only develop a personal style, but also an awareness of the entire process of creating functional pottery. Included will
be demonstrations of the creation of simple forms (mugs, small bowls, and plates) along with more complex forms (covered bakers, large platters,
and bowls) as well as slip trailing, sgraffito, and glaze formulation.

Session A: Mondays, August 17 – October 12 (no class on Labor Day), 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Session B: Wednesdays, August 19 – October 7, 9:00 am – Noon

Handbuilding*
Functional or sculptural, ceramic handbuilding has no limits. You will explore the various handbuilding methods: pinch – coil – soft /hard slabs.

Sculpture*
Designed to expand your knowledge of the sculptural ceramic world, you will explore various techniques and artists to inspire you to create your
own pieces of art.

Session B: Wednesdays, August 19 – October 7, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Throwing: Wheel Basics and Beyond*
Ready to get your hands wet at the potter’s wheel? Practice, centering, pulling and creating the basic shapes, cylinder – vase – bowl – plate; then
move beyond to lids, handles and throwing off the hump.

Beginning/Intermediate Ceramics*
Learn and explore the basics- from technique to design- with an eye towards raising your skills to the next level. Whether it is learning centering
and throwing simple forms on the wheel or learning combined forms and advanced glazing techniques, this class is for you.

Cups: The Intimate Form *
Using handbuilding techniques, you will explore a variety of shapes and textures using the cup as your impetus, but you can make what your heart
desires. We will discuss functional aspects of a cup as well as the unique relationship we have with ritual. Formally, we will consider clay
consistency and pottery elements such as handles and feet. Note: This is a six-week class and come with six free Open Labs.

Get Muddy
Want to experience clay without a big commitment then this four-week class is for you. You will work on a different project each week during the
first three weeks that will involve the use of the slab-roller while learning various handbuilding techniques. In the fourth week, you will glaze your
work. Projects will be available for pick-up two weeks after class ends. No Open Labs are offered with this class.

WORKSHOPS
Alpine Gas Firing
Prerequisite: Students must be enrolled in at least one other Clay class or pay an additional $45.00 fee.
Learn how to fire an Alpine updraft gas kiln. This class is for experienced student interested in the process of reduction firing. Participant
requirements: must have taken at least one beginning ceramics class, must have bisque work glazed for firing at cone 10 prior to loading date, and
must be able to participate in a six hour firing shift.

Date Night
The two of you together working in clay, sharing a bite and a sip while you create a great memory and mugs! You will also get the chance to try the
wheel. Your mugs will be ready for pick up two weeks after your date.

Wheel Doctor
Are you struggling with certain forms or shapes? Would you like extra help in developing throwing techniques? The Wheel Doctor workshop is for
anyone who wants coaching on wheel techniques such as throwing lids, centering large amounts of clay, pulling necks on bottles, throwing tall
cylinders, etc. contact the instructor at [email protected] or ClaySpace at 630.393.2529 to indicate your interest. Jean will then arrange a
mutually convenient date and time. You must bring your own clays and tools. Firing (i.e. bisque or glaze) is only available to active ClaySpace
Resident Artists and current ClaySpace students. A minimum of three and maximum of seven is needed for this event.

CERAMIC CLASS KIDS
Clay Fantasy (Ages 8-12)
Your child will be introduced to the wonders of fantasy creatures, pinch pot bowls and cups, and how to use clay slabs to create things like pencil
holders, boxes, lanterns, and wind chimes. An introduction to the potter’s wheel is also provided.
Summer Session B: Saturdays, June 20 – July 18 (no class on July 4th), Noon - 2:00 pm

Summer Art Camp (Ages 9-12)
Your child will have the freedom to play, learn, imagine, and create while experiencing a variety of artistic mediums such as clay, pastels, tempera
paint, plaster gauze, copper foil, and metallic markers. Guided by an experienced art teacher, your child will explore sculpture, pottery (4 projects!),
drawing, and bas-relief. This truly inspiring summer experience should not be missed.
Summer Session A: Monday thru Thursday, July 13 - 16, 1 - 4:00 pm
Summer Session B: Monday thru Thursday July 20 - 23, 1 - 4:00 pm
