Messiah's Youth Group got together on Friday, April 17 to make homemade pizza and enjoy a game night. Twenty-four youth were in attendance. Mr. Gerald Oster directed kitchen traffic as he lead the group in making delicious pizza crust from scratch. Twelve large pizzas were created with a number of delicious toppings including pepperoni, sausage, peppers, green and black olives, onions, pineapple, ham, and multiple blends of cheese. After eating, the group split up to play a variety of games. Pastor Schaller's devotion focused on Jesus' purposeful resurrection, including how the grave cloths were neatly folded Easter morning. After devotion, the perfect spring weather and cool dark evening lured the group outside for a rousing game of Ghost in the Graveyard. Watch your church mailboxes and e-mail inboxes for the next Youth Group Newsletter, which will contain details of coming outings. To join the e-mail newsletter list, send a message to [email protected]. Communion Next Weekend: Announcements for registration may be made to one of the pastors or by signing the sheets on the table in the narthex. As an aid to self-examination, we offer the following from C.F.W. Walther on the blessings from Communion. The apostle [Paul] wishes to say: consider beloved Christians, that when you receive the blessed cup and the blessed bread, each one partakes of the body and blood of Christ; they are both common to all of you. You come into body-and-blood fellowship with one another. For just as many grains become one bread, so in the Holy Supper, you, though you are many, become one Body, one mas are partakers of the 4 -4- one bread and with it one and the same body and blood of Christ. Because of the presence and participation of the body of Christ, the Holy Supper is a meal of the most intimate fellowship and, therefore, at the same time, the highest lovemeal. Just as fervent love is demanded, so fervent love is delivered. We all come together, as children of the same family, to the table of our common, heavenly Father. As great as the distinction between communicants in civic life may be, in the Holy Supper all distinctions between communicants in civic life may be, in the Holy Supper all distinctions evaporate. We are all the same, in that we each eat the same earthly and heavenly bread and drink the same earthly and heavenly drink. In this Meal, the subject and his king, the slave and his master, the beggar and the rich, the child and the old man, the wife and the husband, the simple and the learned, truly all communicants stand as the same poor sinners and beggars, hungry and thirsty for grace. Although one may appear in a rough apron while another in velvet and satin, adorned with gold and pearls, when they depart, all take with them that for which they hunger and thirst: Christ’s blood and righteousness as their beauty and glorious dress. No one receives a better food and better drink than the other. All receive the same Jesus, and with Him, the same righteousness. (C.F.W. Who is this that comes from Edom, All His raiment stained with blood, To the captive speaking freedom, Bringing and bestowing good, Glorious in the garb He wears, Glorious in the spoil He bears? TLH 2091&2 Fruits of Faith Last Week, April 18-19 Weekend Worship: (Sat. 210 – Sun. 363) 573 Bible Class: (Sat. 20 – Sun. 98) 118 Sunday School: (Sat. 4 – Sun. 78) 82 Sunday Young Adults: 15 Sunday evening class: 15 In His Word: 7 Ruth’s Retreat: 10 Dove West: 53 Dove South: 10 Oakwood: 11 Our House: 10 Care Partners: 9 Orchard Hills: 7 Heritage: 22 Messiah’s Weekly Offering Information Daily Bible readings for home devotions; April 27-May 2, ‘15 Mon Acts 4:23-33 Our friends prayed for the Creator to solve their specific 9 -9- problem, knowing that He who had maneuvered Herod, Pilate, the Gentiles, and the Jews into serving His purposes (23-28) could easily make their temporary problem fit into the long-range progress for His people (29). Note: They did not seek revenge on their enemies but rather asked God to use His power defensively, prompting Christians to speak boldly and to validate the gospel with miracles (30). God cared enough to do both (31-33). Tues John 10:7-18 Jesus is still on the job, protecting us, His sheep; we know Jesus as the Door to heaven, through whom we have (right now) eternal life (7-10). The Good Shepherd is self-sacrificing rather than self-serving (11-13), which makes all the difference. Jesus is bonded to us/His flock as He is bonded to His Father (14-15), and He with our Father faithfully accompanies us from grave to glory, for Jesus always fulfills His assignments (17-18). Wed 1 John 2:24-3:2 Being rescued by the Good Shepherd is prelude to staying with Him throughout life. We concentrate on abiding in God’s Word (24) from here to eternity (25), holding tightly to God’s hand (26-27) as the Spirit enables our sanctified life-style (28-29). Amazing goodness! Love divine! Oh, may our grateful hearts adore The matchless grace nor yield to sin Nor wear its cruel fetters more! (TLH 141:5) Thurs Psalm 23 How familiar and precious! We join our hearts with David in confessing our faith in Jesus and our dependence on Jesus (1-3) through life’s changing scenes, for He continues to bless us with His love and favor (4-5). We rely on Jesus every day of our life, and we long to go home to Him (6). Fri John 15:9-17 If you love Jesus, you are more than willing to act upon His orders, just as He loved His Father and acted upon His Father’s orders (9-10). He expects us to love one another as He loves us, generously and sacrificially, with the best interest for the other’s welfare. What a life—to be friends with Jesus and to share His love with one another! Praise the Lord! Sat Acts 5:27-42 Sprung from jail and acting under God’s orders to preach Jesus and teach others, the apostles ran into more trouble from the Jewish bigwigs and were hauled into court again (27-28). Under interrogation, they presented a simple defense that was simply positive (29-32). Although the council listened to Gamaliel’s advice (keep away from these men and let them alone—v.38), they brutalized the apostles anyway (40) before letting them go free. The apostles weren’t upset over being mistreated, for they knew they were on Jesus’ side of things (41) rather than on Satan’s side, and they happily went about sharing Jesus with everyone who would listen (42). 10 God be praised for supporting (not sheltering) them in their hour of trial! 11 Worship Folder April 25 & 26, 2015 – The Fourth Sunday in Easter Messiah Lutheran Church & School Pre-service Devotion: I John 3:1-2 1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Hymn 210 “The Strife is O’er, the Battle Done” From the red Lutheran Hymnal Pastor: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: We have come into the presence of God, Who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. People: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. Pastor: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will. People: Amen. 12 -1- Pastor: Prayer of the Day People: Amen. 13 -2- The Old Testament Reading – Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever. The New Testament Reading – Acts 4:23-33 And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. 24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your servant David have said: ‘Why did the nations rage, And the people plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the LORD and against His Christ.’ 27 “For truly against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of Israel, were gathered together 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose determined before to be done. 29 Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, 30 by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” 31 And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. 32 Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common. 33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all. 23 14 -3- Pastor: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. Messiah Youth Hymn 351: “Love, Divine All Love Excelling” Sunday only The Nicene Creed: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, Whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission 15 -4- of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Hymn 436 “The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want From the red Lutheran Hymnal The Sermon Text: John 10:11-18 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” 11 Sermon Theme: Jesus is the only Shepherd the sheep need I.
