Two Ladies and the La Jolla Branch Library
In the last issue of the Friends newsletter, I wrote
about the importance of donations to The Friends of
the La Jolla Branch Library. Every donation is
critical to help our library serve the community of
La Jolla.
As we close the books on 2014, I think it is worthwhile to high light two library donors who came
from opposite ends of the century: Ellen Browning
Scripps and Jeannette Hutchinson. Both women
were Midwesterners who found their way to California to make a difference in the growth and quality of the La Jolla public library.
our La Jolla Branch Library. This gift will allow us
to continue “Supporting and Promoting” our priceless library in its service to the community of La
Jolla. We are indebted to this generous lady. How
the money will be used is under discussion with the
Foundation’s Director Doug Dawson and the LJ
Library staff.
As 2014 was coming to a close, Gary Dienhart, the
executor of the Jeannette Hutchinson estate, informed the Board that the La Jolla Library was

The Photography of Jack London
February 15 through April 30
The exhibition in the Community Room will feature the photographic work of California author Jack London on loan
from the Huntington Library displaying images from London’s travels at sea, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the
Russo-Japanese War and many more. Jack London (1876-1916), one of the most widely read American writers in the
world, is known for stories like The Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf, as well as his own adventures as a sailor, Klondike gold-seeker, and rancher. Far less well known is London’s work as a photographer, embodied in 12,000 photographs in the Huntington Library. Most have been seen by very few people and have never appeared in print.
