Every donation is critical to help our library serve the community of La Jolla. As we close the books on 2014, I think it is worthwhile to high light two library donors who came from opposite ends of the century: Ellen Browning Scripps and Jeannette Hutchinson. Both women were Midwesterners who found their way to California to make a difference in the growth and quality of the La Jolla public library. our La Jolla Branch Library. This gift will allow us to continue “Supporting and Promoting” our priceless library in its service to the community of La Jolla. We are indebted to this generous lady. How the money will be used is under discussion with the Foundation’s Director Doug Dawson and the LJ Library staff. Jack London (1876-1916), one of the most widely read American writers in the world, is known for stories like The Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf, as well as his own adventures as a sailor, Klondike gold-seeker, and rancher. Far less well known is London’s work as a photographer, embodied in 12,000 photographs in the Huntington Library. Most have been seen by very few people and have never appeared in print. Opening Reception Sunday, February 15 at 2:00 pm Sue Hodson, Curator at the Huntington Library, will present a lecture illustrated with selections from London’s photographic works. To ensure a seat for this event please RSVP by calling the La Jolla Library at 858-552-1657 The LA JOLLA LIBRARY ART COMMITTEE’S goal is to provide inspiring exhibitions that will be of interest to a broad and diverse audience.
