professionals or organizations to care effectively for patients from diverse cultures,
groups, and communities. Linguistic competency is defined as the ability of a physician
or surgeon to provide patients who do not speak English or who have limited ability to
speak English, direct communication in the patient’s primary language. Cultural and
linguistic competency was incorporated into the planning of this activity. Additional
resources on cultural and linguistic competency and information about AB1195 can be

COURSE DESCRIPTION
T
he 21st Annual San Diego Heart Failure Symposium offers a unique opportunity to learn
about the newest and most exciting innovations in the field. New strategies for patient management are being developed and some of these are on the verge of approval for use in the heart
failure population. The sessions for this year’s Symposium include lectures on the best way of managing risk factors for heart failure, where and how new therapies will fit into the picture and the
optimal use of devices for detecting and treating heart failure. The faculty for the Symposium is
exceptionally strong and includes experts from UCSD as well as guest speakers from Los Angeles,
Minneapolis and Boston. Concepts brought up in the lectures will be examined further in panel and
case discussions. Most importantly, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to and meet the outstanding faculty that will participate in the 21st Annual San Diego Heart Failure Symposium.
SYMPOSIUM OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
1. Summarize current treatments available for heart failure and provide information to help
in the selection of the most rational choices in individual patients.
2. Review strategies for implementing medical and device therapies that will lead to
improved outcomes in heart failure patients.
3. Define how specific populations including minorities, women and the elderly respond to
various approaches to treating hypertension and heart failure.
NEEDS ASSESSMENT
Heart failure (HF) is common, affecting nearly 5 million Americans. It is also one of the
few cardiovascular disorders for which prevalence figures are increasing. An estimated
670,000 new cases of heart failure are diagnosed each year and this condition is a major
cause of morbidity and mortality (80% of men and 70% of women less than 65 years of age
who has HF will die within 8 years). Overall, heart failure is the number one cause of hospitalizations of the elderly in the US.
Knowledge about heart failure is accumulating so rapidly that individual clinicians may be
unable to readily and adequately synthesize new information into effective strategies of care
for patients with this syndrome. (2010 Heart Failure Society of America Comprehensive
Heart Failure Practice Guidelines) This year’s Symposium will provide a comprehensive
overview of current evidence based therapies and treatment strategies as well as emerging
approaches for treatment.
The importance of correcting deficiencies in knowledge and practice is evidenced from the
recent results demonstrating that increased use of evidence based, life sustaining therapies
and performance measures have a significant impact on the outcome of patients with HF
(OPTIMIZE- HF, JAMA 2007; 297: 61).
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for this activity includes cardiologists, internists, primary care physicians, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
ACCREDITATION
The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine is accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical
education for physicians.
The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine designates this live activity for
a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the
credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA
PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. For the
purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA
Category 1 Credit(s)™ (report up to 6.25 hours of credit and list “CME Category 1” as the
provider number).
