or testing must register and
maintain a quality control
manual with Transport Canada.
This manual describes the
activities of the facility, what
they can do, not what they can’t
do. Our manual is very strong
in the areas of training and
safety of all personal and
equipment they are working on.
All testing procedures are
contained in this manual and
followed accordingly.
Standard B620 Overview
This standard applies to tanks,
other than intermediate bulk
containers and tubes, used for
the transportation of dangerous
goods primarily by road. Learn
more about it below.

B620
Why is Standard B620 required?
CSA Standard B620 specifies
requirements for highway,
portable, fiber reinforced plastic
and pressure/vacuum liquid
waste highway tanks for the
transportation of dangerous
goods. Industries from across
Canada were consulted and
formed a committee to evolve
this standard to what it is today.
Previous editions were
published in 1987, 1998, 2003
and the newest in 2009.
What criteria is required for
each level of inspection and
how often are they required?
Periodic testing and inspection
are contained on tables 1 and 2.
Did you know that a
hydrostatic or pneumatic test
and inspection is required if...
... the tank shows signs of dents
abrasions corroded or signs on
leakage?
...the tank was involved in an
accident that may have
compromised the tank
...the tank hasn’t been used for
one year or more to transport
dangerous goods
...the tank has been modified
The standard is used mostly for
tanks/vessels that travel on
roadways but may include
those used on rail and marine. It
considers the design,
construction, certification,
assembly, modification, repair,
testing, inspection and periodic
retesting, identification and
maintenance of these tanks. The
Transportation of Dangerous
Goods (TDG) Acts and
Regulations apply the Standard
B620 as well as what is
contained in their acts and
regulations. Did you know that?
How do you compare
inspections done from one
facility to the next?

policies and procedures for our

Pressure Test (Hydrostatic)
 relief valves are removed
and plugged or blocked. At
this interval, the relief valve
is sent out to a certified
valve company for
inspection, cleaning, repair
and certification as required
by Standard B620. This
information is kept on file
linked to the tank which is
being tested.
Tanker Unit
 sub-frame is unbolted from
frame cleaned if necessary;
same inspection as above is
performed; sub-frame
replaced, nuts and bolts
tightened to specification
Leakage Test
includes, but not limited to:
 all product piping and
valves shall be in place and
operative
Pressure Test (Pneumatic)
applied to tanks with MAWP of
5psi or less
 the procedure is similar to
the Hydrostatic Test but
compressed air is used.
Also
non-destructive
examination (NDE) that is
required or if there is any fault
or defect that is questionable, a
second party that is registered
to do the required level of
inspection will be called in.
As required by the Standard
B620, a written report for each
inspection or test is dated and
signed by the tank inspector
and is provided to customer. A
copy is always kept on file as
required by Transport Canada
for auditing or reference
purposes.
 the tank is completely filled
with water and pressured to
the manufacturer’s test
pressure and/or referencing
a chart contained in the
Standard B620. This
pressure is held for 10min
minimum. The tank and all
outlets are checked for leaks
during this time.
 all relief valves set to below
test pressure removed and
opening capped or plugged
 Hydrostatic test on any
tanks over MAWP of 5psi
