Interoute was formed to interconnect
the many PTT’s of Europe (BT, France
Telecom etc.) with high-speed fibre,
enabling delivery of seamless solutions
and services across the block. By 2004
we’d created a platform that behaved
so consistently we were able to start
building services for the Enterprise
market. Services that are delivered in
exactly the same way, irrespective of
last mile technology, varying SLA’s, or
approaches to service; we made it flat,
fast and consistent.

engineered for the ambitious.

Next came communications, with
a video and voice platform in the
network that delivered that same
consistency of service across
Europe. A massive amount of
work was undertaken to deliver a
simple and compelling proposition
to our customers. To build out the
communications platform at the rapid
rate required, we needed a more
powerful, flexible and expansive
computing platform. This need drove
the latest piece in the jigsaw: IaaS
in the form of Interoute Virtual Data
Centre (VDC). Introducing a cloud
computing platform directly into
67,000km of blindingly fast network
changes the game.
We’re in 14 global locations, covering
all of Europe (London x 2, Slough,
Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt, Geneva,
Paris, Madrid, Milan & Zurich) and
worldwide (Hong Kong, Los Angeles
& New York) with more zones being
added this year. Computing and data
can be built out and held in any of
these zones via one interface or
using our API.
Highly developed networking tools
mean you can control exactly where
that data does and doesn’t go, and you
can move data around at will without
getting charged a single penny, cent
or nickel.
On Interoute VDC your applications
fly. Our multiple locations mean the
latency from our platform is typically
a fraction of that of our competitors,
who often choose only one or two
zones per region. This means that
you can place your data and compute
power closer to your users and
customers. This is important because
it means that in some instances you
can satisfy the same workload with a
lot less resource, which in turn means
less cost (hurrah). Our platform works
on the premise of closely coupled
network and computing, resulting in

SQL Failover on Interoute VDC.
Interoute Virtual Data Centre enables
our users to create a geographically
distributed cloud environment between
all of our interconnected global
locations. This makes avoiding data
loss simple and cost effective. One way
to do this is to set up SQL mirroring
between two VDC locations.
In this example, we show how building
a multi-site synchronous mirrored SQL
solution across three European data
centres helps increase availability,
ensure data protection and make
server maintenance easy.
We’ve used high-safety mode
synchronous replication with
automatic failover using a witness
server. Since we only needed two
SQL nodes in the cluster, we used
SQL standard edition. Deploying
virtual machines in three VDC zones,
Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin delivers
a truly distributed cloud architecture,
with all three zones interconnected
over an Interoute VPN. This helps
ensure ultra-low latency across
the cluster.
