LOWER COLUMBIA CLASSIC CAR CLUB MARCH 2015 Greetings from Club President Fred Mestrich. February was another quiet month for club activities but not for event planning. The swap meet committee has its event well planned with advertising filling more arena and exhibit hall spaces than last year. But by the Backfire printing, the swap meet will have happened. Successfully I hope. Thank you to my swap meet committee members, Rod Rawson, Darryl Neimi, Paul Kalstrom, Charlie Clayton and Jim Purdy. Hopefully I can report next month how successfully the swap meet was. Thad Nolan, the college mechanics Instructor, stopped by with a flier for the Open House at the Merts Campus. This will be May 1, 2015, I will have more information next month. Burt Young says that things are going well for the 50’s Cruise Reunion planning. However, there is a little glitch with the graphics for the T-Shirts and Dash Plaques but should be resolved soon. On a sad note we lost Charter Member Tom Potter last month. He always supported all of our activities with enthusiasm. Next club meeting is March 19th 2015 @ Steve Jordan’s Shop. Hope to see you there. Not wanting to go back to the store, I got on the internet and found a recipe for condensed tomato soup! I will never buy tomato soup again, so easy and so good!! Here is that recipe, hope you enjoy it! Condensed Tomato Soup 8 oz tomato sauce 1-2 tbsp. sugar 1-tbsp cornstarch ½ tsp salt Wisk together and use in your favorite recipe. This equals 1 can of condensed tomato soup. I used this in a Sheppard’s pie recipe that I have made for years and it turned out wonderful! The Sheppard’s pie recipe will follow in another Back Seat article. In my life I would own three 1956 and one 1955 Ford convertibles. The troubling part of all this is I have no Ford convertibles now. The day I turned sixteen I was on summer break and would start my junior year at Reynolds High school come fall. Mom promised I could get my driver’s license on my Birthday so that morning, prepared and studied up, we headed out to the DMV. Using my mom’s 56 Ford Hardtop I took the test and even though I nearly ran a red lite I passed. My life began as of that moment. I got to drive home and spent the rest of the day washing and polishing mom’s 56 because I knew it would be the car I would be allowed to drive from time to time. That evening we had a family Birthday party with the usual presents, a shirt, a record album, new basketball and some other things. The party was ending my older brother Clark had cut out early, no surprise there, brother’s birthday not so cool. My Dad then announced I had one more gift and to come out side to the shop. As we walked to the shop I saw a car coming down the driveway and my brother was driving. At this point I had not put 2 and 2 together because, well, you know how you see the ads were the young graduate runs out of the house to see his or her beautiful new car with a giant red bow on the hood, well that is not what happened. It was a 1956 Ford Fairlane Convertible, that was the good news, It was dirty, I mean been sitting in a horse barn for a year dirty, I don’t think it had been waxed since it was new, the top was a rag, a big dent in the driver’s door, no two tires matched and the front seat, after you got through the dirt was ripped at several seams. My heart was jumping for joy I had my own car and it was a convertible but my brain was going Oh My God. Dad apologized for the dirt, that they only got it running late that afternoon and there was no time left to wash it. I could see were my brother had put a towel on the seat and washed a clean spot on the windshield in front of the driver to look out. The story of the car was that a friend of my Dads took the car as collateral on a loan he had made and put the abused and neglected car in his horse barn till the owner paid the loan and reclaimed the car. Well that never happened and after a year of sitting in a barn, which is probably the only time it had ever been parked inside, He sold it to my Dad for $125.00. Dad informed me that day that he would have a new top installed and put on 4 recap tires and check it out to be sure it was safe. I spent the next couple of day washing, waxing, polishing chrome, cleaning and with vinyl tape repairing the interior. A few days later the top and tires were on, it was cleaned up and shiny, still had a big dent in the door but the fuzzy dice were hanging from the rearview mirror and I had popped off the hub caps to show the lug nuts, just like NASCAR, because that is what you did. How cool it was to be sixteen with a 56 Ford convertible. It’s here - or almost anyway. For all of us here at Lower Columbia Classics, we started off with the New Years Day Cruise and some haven’t gotten out of the mood yet. This spring promises to yield a lot of new rides for members of the club to check out. Several winter garage projects are nearing completion, some more quickly than others, but all are showing signs of coming to life. Fred Mestrich has already had his newly painted and upholstered `56 Chevy convertible out several times and Ann’s 1963 Mercury Comet soft-top is sporting a new paint job and roof and will soon receive an interior re-do. Meanwhile Ross Getchell’s `56 Crown Victoria is not far from making its day-view, boy, what a yummy looking ride that will be. You can get a look at it on the club web site, in the projects section. Mike Cahill just acquired a 1937 Ford four door sedan, so we should be seeing that out and about this summer. A neat, maroon colored car that appears to be mostly stock. I got a look at John Santee’s 1954 Chevy BelAir wagon, via photo’s John sent. He had just finished up painting the body and it looks, as one could expect from him, like a professional finish. Then, hopefully, there’s my 1955 Buick Century soft-top that—if I get the bugs worked out of the engine, may be on the road yet this spring. I’ve had lots of fun and gained Steve even more experience on nailhead engines while restoring this car, I find that there is no limit to what you can find to learn. On another subject, I would like to extend a big thank-you to those members who brought out their cars for Jim Hill’s memorial sock-hop on Sunday, March 8th. The cars lent a lot of ambiance to the event, making it a success for all who attended. The weather was sunny and warm, made you think it was cruising season and certainly made you want to get serious about it. By the time you receive this newsletter, the swap meet will already be history and the 50’s Cruise Car Show will be looming on the horizon. Lots going on in your club right now and the season is only beginning. Join fellow members in making these and other coming events a fun success. Call one of your club officers and volunteer to put in two hours at the 50’s Cruise—there’s always something you can do to help. NOTICE Membership renewal dues were payable on Jan. 1st of 2015.
