Stressed Out: A Novel Approach
to Cancer Immunotherapy
Laurie H. Glimcher, MD is the Stephen
and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell
Medical College in New York, where she is
also a Professor of Medicine. She has made
many significant contributions to the field of
­biomedical research, including the discovery
of important factors that play a role in immune
cell development, cellular stress responses,
and bone diseases such as osteoporosis and
osteoarthritis.
Dr. Glimcher is the recipient of ­numerous
awards and honors including the AAI
­Excellence in Mentoring Award, the Dean’s
Award for Leadership in the Advancement
of Women Faculty and most recently, in
recognition of her excellent research, the
Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science, the
L’Oreal-­UNESCO Award, the Margaret Kripke
Legend Award and in 2015 the Steven ­Beering
Award. She is a Fellow of the American
­Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Member
of the National Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Glimcher received her MD from Harvard
Medical School and her postdoctoral training at
Harvard and at the National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland,
and is board certified in Internal Medicine
and Rheumatology. Previously, she was the
Irene Heinz Given Professor of Immunology
at the Harvard School of Public Health, where
she was director of the Division of Biological
­Sciences, and Professor of Medicine at Harvard
Medical School, where she headed one of the
top ­immunology programs in the world. She
also served as Senior Physician and Rheumatologist at the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital.
Dr. Glimcher is a respected role model
for female ­scientists, a mentor
to young ­researchers, and
a visionary leader with a
commitment to translational
science. She has contributed
more than 350 scholarly
articles and papers to the
­medical literature.
