Syllabus Materials
Upon completion of this program, the
learner should be able to:
• Identify common skin manifestations of serious infections.
• Apply strategies to effectively
diagnose and treat latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).
• Choose appropriate antibiotic
therapy for patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
• Discuss the latest approaches to treatment of Clostridium difficile infection.
• Assess patients taking biological
agents for specific infections for which they are at increased risk.
• Describe the signs and symptoms of prosthetic joint infection and choose the appropriate initial diagnostic tests.
• Recognize and evaluate HIV and
hepatitis C virus infection in patients and assess for new curative treatment.
• Apply effective strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections.
• Manage patients with recurrent infections due to staphylococcus
and streptococcus.
• Describe emerging infections that
may present in a primary care practice, including chikungunya
and dengue.
• Diagnose the most common causes of “mono-like” illness.
• Use antibiotics appropriately for common community infections.
• Assess complex infectious disease problems using a case-based format.
This course is designed for primary care
physicians, including specialists in family
practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics;
clinical microbiologists; pharmacists, nurses;
and individuals in training for these careers. Lectures and interactive workshops will
provide an update on the current, state-ofthe-art diagnosis and treatment of infectious
diseases that commonly arise in adults and/
or children in the community and which
would routinely be encountered by primary
care physicians in the Midwest.
Course syllabus materials will be emailed as
a link to registered participants the week of
the conference. CDs will also be available
the day of the conference. Print copies of
the syllabus will not be provided. You are
encouraged to download or print materials
you wish to use in advance. You may also
bring your laptop. A limited number of
outlets are available so you are encouraged to
have a fully charged battery.
Registration Fees
The fee is $250 for physicians and $175
for allied health care professionals. UI
clinical-appointment/adjunct faculty,
retired or emeritus physicians, and UI
faculty may register for $125. Please see
registration form for other fee categories.
All fees include registration, instruction
and educational materials, CME and CEU
recording, continental breakfast, lunch, and
refreshment breaks.
While registration is open until the start of
the meeting, we encourage early registration
to enable us to provide the best possible
service to participants. A $25 fee will be
charged for canceled registrations. No

• Identify common skin manifestations of serious infections.
• Apply strategies to effectively
diagnose and treat latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).
• Choose appropriate antibiotic
therapy for patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
• Discuss the latest approaches to treatment of Clostridium difficile infection.
• Assess patients taking biological
agents for specific infections for which they are at increased risk.
• Describe the signs and symptoms of prosthetic joint infection and choose the appropriate initial diagnostic tests.
• Recognize and evaluate HIV and
hepatitis C virus infection in patients and assess for new curative treatment.
• Apply effective strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections.
• Manage patients with recurrent infections due to staphylococcus
and streptococcus.
• Describe emerging infections that
may present in a primary care practice, including chikungunya
and dengue.
• Diagnose the most common causes of “mono-like” illness.
• Use antibiotics appropriately for common community infections.
• Assess complex infectious disease problems using a case-based format.

Purpose and Intended Audience
This course is designed for primary care
physicians, including specialists in family
practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics;
clinical microbiologists; pharmacists, nurses;
and individuals in training for these careers. Lectures and interactive workshops will
provide an update on the current, state-ofthe-art diagnosis and treatment of infectious
diseases that commonly arise in adults and/
or children in the community and which
would routinely be encountered by primary
care physicians in the Midwest.
Registration Fees
The fee is $250 for physicians and $175
for allied health care professionals. UI
clinical-appointment/adjunct faculty,
retired or emeritus physicians, and UI
faculty may register for $125. Please see
registration form for other fee categories.
All fees include registration, instruction
and educational materials, CME and CEU
recording, continental breakfast, lunch, and
refreshment breaks.
While registration is open until the start of
the meeting, we encourage early registration
to enable us to provide the best possible
service to participants. A $25 fee will be
charged for canceled registrations. No
refunds will be given for cancelations made
after April 3, 2015. For on-site registration
a $25 additional fee will be added.
