Nano-sized Mysteries, Surfaces, & DNA!
What is Nano?
A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. We
explored size and
scale as we learned
about the unique properties of nano particles. Did you know that
gold actually turns red
when its particles become smaller?

How do scientists

In this lesson we
learned which about
hydrophobic and hydrophilic nanosurfaces. We tested
fabrics and sand to
learn why some do not
get wet!
Human Code DNA
Nano sized structures
affect us in big ways.
Just think about DNA,
the molecule that shapes
us. We had a blast
building double helix
structures out of candy
and looking at some of
our inherited traits.

What is it? Why it’s the science behind magnetic attraction and repulsion, of
course. Students also explored permanent, temporary, and non-magnetic materials. Many metals are
temporary magnets, meaning they can become magnetic when in contact with

Science Crew students are electrical engineers!
We explored the properties of conductive and insulating materials. Students built simple circuits
to test conductivity. They learned the importantance of a complete, unbroken circuit. Then, they
created their own conductive slime and used it to
transfer electricity to an LED!

How are magnets used in technology? We
modeled high speed MagLev trains and constructed our own Magnetic racing tracks. Science Crew students applied their knowledge of
Magnetic attraction and repulsion to power
their cars.
