CEO Note
The
harmonious
co-operative
nature between the Principal Club
and HRNSW in conducting the
Championship over the past three
editions cannot go without mention
and augers well for the future for
other like events in the Premier State.
The performance of Rosario La Spina
at the Heroes Ball together with his
performance of the National Anthems
on Grand Final Day will forever be
difficult to match however NSW wishes
Western Australia well as it has carriage
of the national Championship.
CROWD ADORES RECORD
BEAUTIDE THE CHAMPION
The last tranche of the NSW trilogy of
Inter Dominion Grand Final Carnivals
culminated in an outstanding day a
racing at Tabcorp Park Menangle on
Sunday 1st March.
The champion was confirmed in
Beautide with his successive victory
and all accolades must be bestowed
upon James Rattray and Fia Svensson
for the brilliance of this mighty pacer.
Beautide’s win was simply effortless
and breathtaking.
The support offered by Tabcorp
through Managing Director David
Attenborough and Executive General
Manager Commercial Development
Doug Freeman with the sponsorship
of the Inter Dominion was truly
appreciated and demonstrated the
leading wagering operator’s substantive
involvement in harness racing in
an ever changing and challenging
wagering landscape.
The Government support through
Destinations NSW gave NSW an
advantage over other States which must
not go without sincere thanks.
As the ten thousand plus crowd
packed the picture perfect Tabcorp
Park Menangle on Sunday 1st March
the weather was obviously on the side
of the organisers and Grand Final
Day with the Lexus Fashions on the
Field drawing record entries with the
emphasis on style. However that was
just the first record to be set on the day.
From race one the pacing records
began to tumble . . . track, Australian,
Australasian and the unimaginable
a 1:47.7 mile scorched from the track
by Adore Me in the Cordina Chicken
Farms Ladyship Mile.
To break the Southern Hemisphere
record previously held by Smoken Up at
1:48.5 and lay claim to being one of the
best mares to race anywhere on earth,
Adore Me secured the adoration of the
extremely receptive audience.
Will there be another day like it? . . . Of
course there will as we look forward to
Miracle Mile Day in 2016.

NSW CLUBS
DRIVE CHAMPIONSHIP
The conducting Clubs – Principal,
Newcastle, Wagga, Bathurst and
Penrith – are to be complimented for
their tremendous effort in hosting the
World Drivers’ Championship. Whilst
the on-track activity was considered
the best ever Championship, the offtrack hosting and activities will long
live in the memories of the competing
drivers and all due to the hard work of
the Club personnel.
Whilst New Zealand champion Dexter
Dunn must be congratulated on his
emphatic victory the competition was
the most even throughout the history
of the Championship. Eight of the ten
drivers won a heat race and the other
two drivers finished second in a heat.

CONFERENCE ELEVATES
AUSTRALIA TO
WORLD LEADERS
Harness Racing Australia under
leadership of Geoff Want and
diligence of Andrew Kelly must
congratulated for the conduct of
World Trotting Conference in Sydney
during the Carnival.
The array of international presenters
at the Conference delivered addresses
on Communications, Marketing &
Business Development, Breeding,
Integrity, Racing & Wagering and
Animal Welfare.
Whilst this conference was ranked
with the very best held in the 44 year
history if you missed it don’t despair it
will be on again in 2016. However you
will need to travel – this time to Canada
which, like Australia, is one of the best
destinations on the planet.

Inter Dominion Wrap
Some people left Tabcorp Park Menangle on Sunday March 1 scratching their head. They had just witnessed several special “harness
racing” moments but understandably people were unsure which star shone the brightest. Was it the “Tassie Terminator” Beautide after
he recorded his second Inter Dominion victory? Or did Adore Me stamp herself as the best mare ever to race in Australasia when she
left her rivals in her wake as she broke Smoken Up’s mile record and stopped the clock in 1:47.7. Some suggested the star on the day was
Natalie Rasmussen as she drove three consecutive winners netting her two Gr. 1 races in the process. If you missed the action here is
a full run down of the day.
RACE 1 HEAT 20 WORLD
DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP
RACE 3 NEW SOUTH
WALES OAKS
New Zealand reinsman Dexter Dunn
already had the Championship
wrapped up prior to the final heat but
that did not stop the kiwi star showing
his class and skill. Dunn drove Global
View for Darren Hancock and after
settling midfield came with a late run to
score by more than six metres. After the
race Dunn was proud of his achievement.
“It’s pretty special, just to compete in the
Championship was a massive privilege
and to win it, I’m just over the moon
and it is something that I will be able
to take with me for the rest of my life,”
Dunn said.
“Getting to put on your country’s colours
in an international tournament is a very
special thing and this achievement is
right up there with all of the big things
I have done in the sport.”
France’s Tony Le Beller finished fifth
in the final heat but managed to hang
onto second place in the Championship
while USA’s Tim Tetrick was third overall
despite a sixth in the last heat.
Fight For Glory proved too strong in
winning the first Gr. 1 of the afternoon
despite drawing wide for the training
driving combination of Mark Purdon
and Natalie Rasmussen. Fight For
Glory worked forward in the early
stages and held a commanding margin
up the straight and won by eight
metres with the Emma Stewart trained
Delight Me second and Cran Dalgety’s
Delightful Lana third.
After the win Purdon was impressed
with Fight For Glory’s performance.
“She’s a filly that has gone ahead in
leaps and bounds in the past six weeks
and is just really in the zone at the
moment,” Purdon said.
“She will now return to Christchurch and
prepare for the New Zealand Oaks.”
RACE 2 LADY DRIVERS
INVITATIONAL
Darren Hancock was provided with
an early training double when Natalie
Rasmussen steered home the first of her
winners on the day when Ive Gottalife
proved too tough for his rivals. In a
strongly run affair Saloon Passage
led while Ive Gottalife sat outside the
leader. The pair finished first and
second while Whata Avenue finished
third after racing behind the leader.
I nt e r D o minio n Wrap – 3 – M arc h 2015
RACE 4 LADYSHIP MILE
It was billed as the battle between New
Zealand’s best mare Adore Me and
Australia’s Frith. The Junee trained
Frith drew barrier one while the kiwi
was given the visitors draw and forced
to start from the outside of the field
in gate ten. Frith was crossed by the
Victorian trained Courageousnquick in
the early stages but Frith was quickly off
the inside and surged forward to take
the lead with Adore Me outside her.
Approaching the turn Adore Me looked
to be travelling better than Frith and
as they entered the straight Adore Me
raced away and won by more than
eighteen metres stopping the clock in
a recording breaking 1:47.7. Beauty
Secret was second for Stewart and Lang
while Laterron got home strongly for
third with Tim Tetrick in the gig.
After
the
race
Purdon
was
understandably proud of his mare.
“She’s a champion mare, it was an
unbelievable race to watch, to sit
outside them and run that sort of time
was just amazing,”
“She could well have stamped herself
as the best mare we have seen with
that performance, a lot of older people
came up to me and told me they can’t
remember a better one, it is very special
to be a part of this.”
RACE 5 NEW SOUTH
WALES DERBY
Victorian trainer Emma Stewart won
the NSW Derby again after winning
the Gr. 1 feature twelve months ago.
Last year Major Secret upset some more
fancied rivals but this time around Ideal For
Real was the clear second favourite behind
the Purdon trained Hug The Wind.
Run considerably slower than the Oaks,
the race was setup for horses racing on the
speed and it was no surprise to see Hug
The Wind and Ideal For Real race away
for a tight finish with the latter getting the
nod in a photo finish. The David Kennedy
trained Sporty Spook finished third after
racing behind the leader.
RACE 6 CHARIOTS OF FIRE
New Zealand trainer Barry Purdon
is no stranger to the Chariots Of Fire
having won the race in 1999 with Holmes
DG. Holmes DG went onto win two
Miracle Miles and Purdon is hoping Our
Sky Major can follow in those footsteps
after taking out this year’s Chariots Of
Fire impressively, racing outside the leader
throughout the event.
The Belinda McCarthy trained Bling It
On worked forward and found the lead
soon after the start and looked the horse
to beat but was run down halfway up the
straight by the Zac Butcher driven four
year old.
“He has always raced against the best
horses since he started his career so
sitting outside the leader wasn’t too much
of a concern,” Barry Purdon said.
“He trained on well in the lead up to the
race and hopefully we can be back in a
year’s time racing in a Miracle Mile.”
RACE 7 INTER DOMINION
The James Rattray trained Beautide
made it back to back Inter Dominions
after an amazing performance where
he sat parked for the entire 3009 metres
journey. The short priced favourite sat
outside three time New Zealand Cup
winner Terror To Love but was never
in any danger with Rattray asking the
seven year old to extend in the straight
the final time.
The Geoff Webster trained Flaming
Flutter sat on the back of Beautide
throughout and finished off well to claim
second while For A Reason got off the
inside approaching the final turn and ran
into third for the second year in a row.
After the win Rattray was proud of
Beautide’s achievement in winning
another Inter Dominion.
“It’s incredible to win back to back Inter
Dominions, we didn’t have an ideal
preparation this year but I thought his
run in the Victoria Cup was very good, he
came through that very well and his heat
run was great,” Rattray said.
“He relaxed outside the leader and
controlled the race from there, he felt
good around the final turn and I always
thought there was going to be a fair bit
left when I asked him to go.”
RACE 8 FREE FOR ALL
Franco Ledger blew his rivals away
after the wind and rain tried to do the
same in the lead up to the race. The
race was put back after a huge storm
front hit the track and not even a rain
affected track could dampen Franco
Ledger’s performance.
I nt e r D o minio n Wrap – 4 – M arc h 2015
The seven year old raced midfield but
exploded away when asked to extend
by Geoff Webster and won by seven
metres from the Ashlee Siejka trainer
Lochinver while Cran Dalegty’s Bit Of
A Legend held onto third.
RACE 9 TROTTERS
STANDING START
Brent Lilley had seven runners engaged
at the Menangle meeting and he was
rewarded with the final Gr. 1 of the
afternoon when former European
trotter Kvintet Avenger outstayed his
rivals to score a gutsy win.
Kvintet Avenger fought tenaciously as
another of Lilley’s runners Kyvalley
Blur looked set for victory and came
through the middle to grab his
stablemate in the shadows of the post
while the Nicole Molander trained Lord
Liam finished third.
RACE 10 CARNIVAL STAKES
The Brad Hewitt trained Sweet Molly
Oshea charged home over the top of her
rivals in the last event as she recorded
a narrow victory.
Race favourite
Shannonsablast looked set to score when
he kicked away turning for home but
the Goulburn based mare worked home
solidly late to score by half a head.
After missing out on a start in the
Ladyship Mile and the Chariots Of Fire
it was a rewarding victory for Hewitt.
It was Australia’s best harness racing
meeting on paper and lived up to that
reputation with record breaking times
and mind blowing performances.
Rather than debating which star shone
brightest on the day, maybe it is best to
reflect on the entire galaxy and enjoy
the warm glow.
Preview of the Month Ahead
BROKEN HILL, FRIDAY NIGHT
13 MARCH BROKEN HILL CUP
(TAB CARNIVAL OF CUPS)
The $14,000 Coughlan Drilling Pty
Ltd Broken Hill Cup for C1/C3 horses
is the feature race on the programme.
It will be a big weekend in Broken Hill,
after the harness meeting on Friday
night many locals will be backing up at
the St Pats race meeting on Saturday.
In 2014 it was five year old
Bettatobelucky winning narrowly
with Montana Madge only a half-head
away in second place. With big prize
money on offer for all events, strong
and healthy fields are ensured.
YOUNG, SATURDAY NIGHT
14 MARCH YOUNG CUP
(TAB CARNIVAL OF CUPS)
With Tabcorp Park Menangle’s “Super
Sunday” now only a memory, Harness
Racing New South Wales is gearing
up for another exciting month of
racing action with Young set to host its
biggest meeting of the year.
The $40,800 Cordina Farms Young
Pacers Cup is the feature event and
has attracted a strong field. The race
has been won by some talented horses
recently with 2015 Inter Dominion
finalist Teo Enteo winning the race last
year while multiple Gr. 1 winning mare
Our Sixpence took out the race in 2013.
Another feature race at the meeting is
the Young Oaks, a race won by leading
Australian mare Frith in 2013.
NARRABRI, SUNDAY
AFTERNOON 15 MARCH
NARRABRI CUP
(TAB CARNIVAL OF CUPS)
Narrabri will run its second meeting
for the month after a successful race
day on Saturday 7 March. Heats were
run at the first meeting for the John
Dean Memorial and the Carnival Of
Cups final, with both races set to be
decided on March 15.
The $8,160 Narrabri Cup is set down
for decision. Last year the race was
won by the Margot Lennox trained
and Clayton Harmey driven Dan.
“On the old track there was occasional
trouble, not nearly as much as people
thought but on the new track the
longer straight and sweeping turns
has alleviated many of the concerns
and issues.”
The club will host seven meetings in
the space of eleven days with a number
of feature races over the carnival. The
feature events include:
BATHURST, GOLD CROWN
CARNIVAL 18 WEDNESDAY 28 SATURDAY MARCH
This will be the first time the Gold
Crown Finals will be held on the new
Bathurst track. Bathurst CEO Danny
Dwyer is looking forward to the
carnival and believes the new track will
be a big attraction for many trainers.
“Trainers
everywhere
have
a
preference for bigger tracks. Not just
the Victorians who are accustomed
to racing on them but now many
Sydney based trainers whose horses
are educated and trained on the big
Menangle track,” Dwyer said.
•
Gr. 1 $100,000 Gold Crown for
two year old colts and geldings.
•
Gr. 1 $100,000 Gold Tiara for
two year old fillies
•
Gr. 3 $40,000 Gold Chalice
for three year old colts
and geldings
•
Gr. 3 $40,000 Gold Bracelet
for three year old fillies
There are also a number of other races
for a variety of grades over the carnival
with good prize money.
“I think what makes Bathurst unique is
the fact we don’t just have a Finals night,
in between the heats and finals there is a
number of social functions and other race
meetings to attend.”
“When you come to Bathurst for the
Prev iew o f t h e M o nt h A h e a d – 5 – M arc h 2015
carnival you can stay for the best part
of a fortnight and find something to do
every day.”
One of the two year old fillies that
will be aiming at the Gold Tiara is the
Rob Xerri trained Hazels Girl after
her recording breaking run on debut.
Hazels Girl became the fastest two
year old filly in Australasia when she
paced a mile at Menangle in 1:54.5
breaking the previous record by one
tenth of a second.
“At this stage I am planning on
taking three two year olds up for the
Crown and Tiara but after her run at
Menangle last week Hazels Girl looks
to be my best chance,” Xerri said.
“I don’t plan on giving her another run
between now and then but I’d expect
her to run a very good race on the big
track at Bathurst.”
ARMIDALE, SUNDAY
AFTERNOON 29 MARCH
ARMIDALE CUP (TAB
CARNIVAL OF CUPS)
Armidale’s feature meeting of the year
is set down for the final Sunday of
March. The club will host a meeting
the Sunday prior with a number
of heats being run at that meeting
for the rich finals at the Armidale
Cup meeting.
The $10,200 Armidale Cup is for C4
or better horses and is run over 2360
metres. There is also a $10,200 C0
final over 1609 metres. Last year the
Armidale Cup was won by Dan for
the training/driving combination of
Margot Lennox and Clayton Harmey.

HARNESS RACING ACT 2009
•
The association lodged its
submission to the New South
Wales governments proposed
review of the Harness Racing act.
The Association has confirmed its
intention to run the Bonus race
series again in 2015. It is intended
for the series to be run in September/
October 2015 so as to avoid clashing
with NSW Breedes Challenge heats
and finals and the carnival of cups
races. The proposed timing early in
the 2015/2016 racing season will give
ample time for finalisation of the
programme and for trainers to mark
their calendars accordingly.
In conjuction with the Breeders NSW
HRNSW and the principal club this
association is finalising planning for
the continuation of the successful
ready to run sale. Confirmation and
details of this event are scheduled to
be announced at the end of the March.
The outcomes from the Participants
meeting held at Penrith Paceway have
been forwarded to the Board of Harness
Racing NSW following endorsement
by HRICG in February 2015. Actions
following the review by the Board will
be announced in due course.

UHRA
United Harness Racing Association
WHAT HAS BEEN
HAPPENING RECENTLY?
WHAT IS THE UNITED
HARNESS RACING
ASSOCIATION?
The UHRA is the official accredited
body for Trainers and Drivers in
New South Wales however since its
inception the association membership
has been and will remain open to all
industry participants.
It has been a busy for a number of our
members over the Inter Dominion
carnival and we would like to
congratulate all of those that had
success. To be a part of the big days
like the Inter Dominion Grand Final
meeting is what trainers and drivers
aspire to and to get a horse through
to compete in any Gr. 1 race is a credit
to those involved with the horse.
Watching the international drivers
compete in the World Driving
Championship has been enjoyable
and it was great to see them make the
trip to Australia to compete. Drivers
like Tim Tetrick and Jody Jamieson
have won the biggest races in North
America and it was great to see all of
the drivers make themselves available
to speak with local participants.
U H R A – 8 – M arc h 2015
Whether it was for advice or just a
friendly chat, all of the drivers were
a credit to their countries. Well done
to Dexter Dunn being crowned the
winner and we look forward to the
2017 Championship.
Finally the association has been
contacted by several members about
different issues affecting them and
their queries will be raised at planned
meetings with the administrators
in NSW. The UHRA is open to all
participants and has a broad range
of members located in all regions
of New South Wales as well as
representatives state wide.

CORTICOSTEROID DRUG
DEXAMETHASONE
The Australian Racing Forensic
Laboratory will adopt new testing
procedures for dexamethasone with
effect from 1 May 2015 resulting in
the screening limit being reduced to
0.2ng/mL.
This will have important implications
for the detection of dexamethasone
following its administration to
racehorses, and will lead to a
prolongation of detection times for
this corticosteroid drug.
By way of an example, the new testing
procedure was applied to the analysis
of samples collected during an
administration trial involving a shortacting dexamethasone preparation
(dexamethasone sodium phosphate)
given intravenously and conducted
as part of the Equine Therapeutics
Research Australia (ETRA) project
and published by the Rural Industries
Research Development Corporation
(RIRDC).
The published ETRA data sheet for
dexamethasone reports a detection
time of three days for the dosage
regimen
and
pharmaceutical
preparation used in the ETRA
trial, and is valid for the new
testing procedure.
It should be noted that this three day
detection time for dexamethasone
sodium phosphate is longer than the
detection time of 48 hours previously
reported in the Australian Equine
Veterinary Association (now Equine
Veterinarians Australia — EVA)
publication 'Detection of Therapeutic
Substances in Racing Horses' ('The
White Book'), using the analytical
methodology at that time.
Therefore veterinarians are advised
that
recommended
withdrawal
periods
for
treatment
with
dexamethasone sodium phosphate
(for example, in products including
Colvasone, Dexadreson, Dexapent,
Dexason, Dexol-5, Dexone-5) must
be based on the new ETRA data sheet
detection time of three (3) days and
not on the previous advice provided
in the EVA publication, and that
trainers are warned accordingly.
It is important to note that a
withdrawal (or withholding) period
is not the same as a detection period.
Any withdrawal period should
be calculated based on the
published detection time, with
the addition of a suitable safety
margin based on the circumstances
of the administration, including
dose, route of administration and
preparation administered.
There have been no studies conducted
on the detection of long-acting forms
of injectable dexamethasone in
relation to the new procedure, and
due to their long and unpredictable
excretion, their use in racehorses
should be avoided.
TRAINERS
SHOULD
ENSURE
THAT THEY DISCUSS THE USE OF
DEXAMETHASONE
WITH
THEIR
VETERINARIAN PRIOR TO USE.
