THE ALWAYS FREE SPRING EDITION CLARKSVILLE COMET CLARKSVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL / MARCH 20, 2015/VOLUME 16 I’m so happy to be able to share with you more of the wonderful things our CMS students are achieving! As you know, last Friday night was the annual HCLS Spelling Bee. Grace Park did a great job representing Clarksville! She made it to the 6th round and made us all very, very proud. Great job Grace! Speaking of proud…of the 450 students county-wide who participated in the PTA Reflections, 3 of our CMS students - Caroline Lovelace, Preetha Ramachandran and Mariana Lennon - placed in the top 3 in their respective categories and moved on to the MD state competition. In addition, Caroline Lovelace placed 2nd in the state competition! Not only did Caroline play “Daydream” on the piano – she composed it! Be sure to visit my instagram page where you can hear Caroline play part of her piece: https://instagram.com/principal_shindel/ HCPSS held its 12th annual History Day Competition this past Saturday at Reservoir High School. Students presented and defended their yearlong projects in front of teachers and other members of the community, and Clarksville had several groups finish in the top 10 of their categories. Please join me in congratulating the following students who will move on to compete in the state competition on May 2: § § § Jeremy Jablonover - 1st place, Written Essay Yamini Ananth- 1st place, Individual Website Sriya Potluri- 2nd place, Individual Performance Also this past Saturday – on an epic “Pi day” - was the Maryland State Math Counts competition. Our team competed against 26 other teams across the state and came in 5th place! Congratulations to Ms. Rogers and her amazing team: Richard Lee, Bryan Dong, Jonathan Fei and Matt Zhou. CONTINUED... Saturday evening our Chamber Choir traveled to Washington D.C. where they had the honor of singing the National Anthem before the Wizards’ game. They wooed the crowd of 25,000+ people – live and on the jumbotron! We’ll post a video on our website as soon as we get our copy. The great news doesn’t stop there! This past week our Orchestra and Band participated in their annual Assessments and our students did an outstanding job! They worked hard all year, and are truly an exceptional group of young musicians, led by our very talented directors, Mr. Boggs and Mr. Flinchbaugh. Finally, we recently learned that 6th grader, Bryce Hu, won Honorable Mention at last week’s ExploraVision Competition. His invention, “Swim Save” helps prevent drowning by stress-activated sensors that inflate and send signals to help centers. In this picture, Bryce is teaching his class about his innovative idea. Look out Shark Tank! Finally, due to spring break, our next newsletter will not be sent until Friday, April 10th. I wish everyone a fun and memorable [homework free!] spring break!
