Abstract:
Understanding how human infants perceive the speech signal at the
initial state of language acquisition has been a central question in
cognitive science. This talk will present a series of NIRS and NIRSEEG co-recording studies exploring how newborns perceive speech
and other related auditory signals. The studies investigate whether
the brain is specialized from the get-go to process speech as a
special auditory stimulus, and will identify some perceptual and
learning mechanisms present at birth which might help young infants
break into language.
