Centro di Neuroscienze Cognitive Dipartimento di Neuroscienze Dipartimento Psicologia Generale Master in Cognitive Neuroscience and Clinical Neuropsychology Seminar Announcement Title: Speech perception at birth: NIRS and EEG studies Speaker: Prof. Judit Gervain, Université Paris Descartes & CNRS, Paris, France When: 11 Maggio 2015, 2.00-3.00 pm Where: Aula Magna Cesare Musatti, via Venezia 8, Padova Abstract: Understanding how human infants perceive the speech signal at the initial state of language acquisition has been a central question in cognitive science. This talk will present a series of NIRS and NIRSEEG co-recording studies exploring how newborns perceive speech and other related auditory signals. The studies investigate whether the brain is specialized from the get-go to process speech as a special auditory stimulus, and will identify some perceptual and learning mechanisms present at birth which might help young infants break into language.
