Gerry 5 VFA Spring Fever!

Gerry 5 VFA
APRIL 2014 EDITION
WWW.GERRY5.COM
Spring Fever!
"April is a promise that May
is bound to keep!" ~Hal Borland
Mother Nature has a way of
making us wait. She likes to
tease us for a while and then
make us wait just a little bit
more. March came-in-like-a-lion-and-left-almost thesame-darn-way. Below average temperatures, gray
days, snow and snizzle with a few flashes of Spring
pretty much sums up March. Cabin fever/Spring
fever is running rampant! With the change to
Daylight Savings Time we were really looking
forward to warm days and outdoor activities.
Gardeners are itching to dig and plant, others look
longingly at their boats, and the sweaters and long
sleeves of Winter are getting quite boring! We know
we should be patient but after this winter it is getting
difficult!
Despite the weather and winter doldrums we had a
good month at the Club. The Meat Raffle/Trivia
Contest was another fun afternoon with great
attendance. We do appreciate your participation and
support of the Scholarships and Charities Funds. We
have another entertaining afternoon scheduled for
April 19th with a special treat for attendees (see
article below). The St. Patrick's Day Feast was once
again a good bit of craic with delicious food and
camaraderie. The Gerry was represented at the MDA
Firefighters Cooking for a Cure fundraiser and it was
a huge success (see article in this newsletter).
"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything."
~William Shakespeare. We hope this is true this year.
We've got a packed calendar for April. Read the
announcements and see the Calendar of Events in
this newsletter for an "at a glance" look.
NHL playoffs (Go Bruins!), the Masters
Tournament, NBA playoffs, and don't forget the Red
Sox are back with regular season play. This plus
NASCAR, pool, and always good company and
interesting conversation present many
opportunities/excuses to join your friends here at the
Club.

Member of the Year Honored
Congratulations to Carol McHugh, our 2013
Member of the Year. Carol
was selected as by the Board
after being nominated by a
fellow member for her
tireless efforts in the kitchen,
assisting with musters, and
participating on various committees. We thank Carol
for your continued dedication to the Gerry. Without
the efforts of Carol and other members like her, we
would not be the great Club we are. Thank Carol and
other volunteers the next time you see them.
Bar Tap Upgrade Complete
"Variety is the spice of life that gives it all its
flavor." ~ William Cowper.
...and we aim to please! We recently upgraded the
bar from the six-tap system to a ten-tap. This means
more varieties of draft beer for our patrons to enjoy.
We've added Harpoon, Blue Moon, Newburyport
Pale Ale, and Bud Light. The upgrade also includes
a new glass chiller and glass beer cases. Next time
you're at the Club check out the new equipment. We
look forward to serving you!
Roll up your Sleeves! Special Blood
Drive - April 17th
As a special assist to the
American Red Cross and the
VFW, we will be hosting a
Blood Drive on Thursday,
April 17th, 1 - 7 p.m. in the
Function Hall. You may
make an appointment by call 1-800-RED-CROSS or
on-line at redcrossblood.org. Walk-ins are welcome.
All donors will receive John's Famous Clam
Chowder as a thank you from the Gerry.
Thanks to our Blood Drive Chairperson, Arlyne
Campbell, and member, Janet Brings, for organizing
this special drive.
A Special Thank You
to Ian Bernier, member and employee, for crafting
and installing the new bar shelf next to the pool table.
It makes great use of a small space and looks good as
well. It wasn't installed for more than a couple of
hours before the first beverage found its new landing
space.

April Meat Raffle and
Trivia Contest
Join us this month on Saturday,
April 19th, at 3:00 p.m. for the
monthly Meat Raffle and Trivia
Contest. We feature an assortment
of meats featuring seasonal
favorites. The meat is from New
England Meat Market. You don't want to miss this!
This month we will also have Darvy's famous
clams available during the Raffle/Trivia. If you've
had them, you know to get there early. If you
haven't, then you don't know what you're missing!
The rules: four meat raffles, - three of which you
must buy into. Tickets are 6 for $5.00 for each of the
first three raffles. All losing tickets are automatically
entered into the fourth raffle,- the losers raffle. There
are no losers! Multiple prizes are awarded for each
raffle. You MUST be present to win.
Trivia starts with the first raffle and is FREE to
play! There are three rounds of 20 questions. Prizes
are awarded to the team with the most points in each
round and a Grand Prize is awarded to the team with
the most overall points. Think April events for this
month's theme plus some general trivia. It's fun,
sometimes informational, and a great way to spend
your afternoon. All proceeds go to the Gerry
Charities and Scholarships Fund.
Attendees may bring snacks for themselves or to
share with others. See you here!!
I would like to
thank the following
people for their help
preparing and participating in the 6th Annual
Firefighters Cooking for a Cure at the Danversport
Yacht Club on Saturday, March 22, 2014: Ryan
Glavin, Jay Smidt, Bill Moynihan, John Blaney,
Karen Rogers, Dirk Martin, Terry Raustad, Cheryl
Raustad, Erik Smith, Jennifer Mitchell, Carol
McHugh, Robb Macomber, Mark Lausier and our
resident Firefighter Retired Rick Bartlett.
I would also like to thank member Vin Conte for
helping procure some very special ingredients for the
event and member Dave Martin for helping gain
access to the Mason's kitchen to cook some of the
food.
All of the above helped to make this a very
successful event and it was a real pleasure working
with them! Although we didn't win, we represented
the Gerry 5 with pride.

the stress of our daily
routines. We proudly
present a night of
comedy on Saturday,

three very popular
comedians, we invite you to join us for lots of
giggles, laughs, and guffaws!
Mike Prior, a familiar name to many of you, has
been making people laugh since his school days
when a bully threatened to beat him up for his lunch
money. Mike has crowds in the palms of his hands.
He has performed with national recording artists as
well as touring with Al Yankovich. For more
information on Mike, see his web site @
mikepriorcomedy.com.
Paul Keenan is best described as a twelve year old
boy trapped in a 6'4" adult body. He is a regular
performer in the Boston comedy scene. For more
information on Paul, see his web site @
paulkeenancomedy.com.
Patty Ross is one of the most sought after
personalities on the national comedy scene. Her
charming sarcastic wit and no-holds-barred
prospective on life's problems coupled with her
unique persona make her a tough but lovable
character. She has performed on national TV and in
films (Grown-Ups 2). For more information on
Patty, see her web site @ comedianpattyross.com.
