Knitting Cocoon Lace
By Jessica Drennan
A week before Christmas,
something sad
happened. An
electrical cord
caught
fire,
smoke detectors rang, and
the family of
four
escaped
unharmed. The
9-year-old son,
though, slipped
away from his mother and ran back into the
house to save his dog and lizard. The poor
boy was overcome by smoke and flames
and died, despite the frantic attempts by
his father and uncle to save him. The boy’s
father and uncle were neighbors of mine
when I was a girl and our families are still
close. My heart ached for them and yet,
I live 250 miles away and felt hopeless to
console them with such a deep loss.
It’s often said that knitting can be a great
stress reliever in our lives, but when we really feel life’s tragedies, as we all do from
time to time, what a true comfort it can be.
My numbed mind soon turned to thoughts
of making the most comforting gift I could
for the boy’s grandmother. I was soon knitting away with a purpose, putting my heart
and thoughts into my stitches. And then,
there is the finished object: a scarf in my
case, proof-positive that I was thinking of
them and my thoughts and prayers were
with them. How lucky we are that our chosen craft is there for us in good times and
bad. Our art is comforting and warm, as
well as beautiful.
More about the scarf: This 10” x 48”
scarf took one ball of the very luscious

Knitting Cocoon Lace
Continued from Page 1
Filatura di Crosa Superior, a cashmeresilk blend. It’s fuzzy nature had me a bit
worried that it might not knit up smoothly
but it worked fine. All that cashmere goodness flowed nicely through my fingers and
the end result is that the lace has a cloudlike feel to it, light, airy, luscious. It’s price
is steeper than most yarns at $24.50 a ball,
but hey, it’s cashmere and silk! You might
not want to make an afghan with it but it is
an absolutely wonderful yarn for a smaller,
special project. Perhaps a quick scarf or
some wrist warmers for a fabulous birthday
present, or maybe get a head-start on a your
holiday gift list. Now that I think about it,
you’re a wonderful woman too. Why not
treat yourself for the upcoming chilly winter weather!
The pattern is called “Cocoon” by Fiber
Trends. This is the first time I’ve ever knit
a lace project this large. I’m the type of
lace knitter that makes a sizeable mistake
after a few inches and gets frustrated easily. I would put it down to think about how
insurmountable the mistake seems. The
project usually ends up in my closet. This
pattern though, was easy to follow, and my
goofy mistakes, usually me forgetting to
make a yarnover, were easy to find and correct. This great pattern and luxurious yarn
made lace knitting so much easier for me
and my friend has a gift of love as well. It’s
good to be a knitter!

classes at Knitting Etc.

people.
For the September Happy Knitting
Hour, we will play “Meet the Fall Yarns”
Scavenger Hunt with prizes. The
hunt will begin at 5 pm sharp!

Bored with knitting in the round? Sign
up for the Mobius basket, where you’ll
learn
the
Mobius
cast-on featured in Cat
Bordhi’s
A Second
Treasury
of Magical
Knitting.
This technique will bring a new (and magical!) perspective that you can apply to knitting “hats with endless beginnings, scarves
from the inside out and boots with no inside or outside….” Sharon Darlow will
show you how to make the Moebius edge
on the top of the basket on one Saturday
afternoon, so you can finish the rest!
Fair Isle and Steeks
Tue Oct 7, 14, 28, Nov 11, 18, 6 – 8 pm, $60 +
tax & materials
Fair isle is traditionally knit with 2 colors of yarn, making double-layered fabric
for extra warmth.
Steeking is a short cut (literally) for
making large
projects like
sweaters.
The entire
piece is first
knitted in the
round without interruptions or openings. After the tube is completed, you cut into the fabric for armholes,
necklines, and front openings (in cardigans). Sleeves are then attached.
Intrigued? Let Jessica Drennan show
you how. Everyone will make the same
little sweater, after which you will be able
to tackle most any stranded or fair isle
sweater!
Cat Bordhi Sock Study
Tue Oct 7, 21, Nov 4, 18 & Dec 9, 6:30 – 8:30
pm, $60 + tax & materials
Have you seen Cat Bordhi’s New Pathways for Sock Knitters, Book One? Are
you amazed by Cat’s innovative approaches to designing and knitting socks? Are you
ready to try to figure out how she does it?
Join Laura Nelkin, designer and sock knitter, and together demystify Cat’s socks.
August 2008
This will be a group effort, so be prepared
to explore the book as a group. We will
choose multiple designs from the book and
conquer them together. Cat has
child sized examples for each
of her sockitectures (sock architectures), so
you will end up
with child sized
socks at the end of the class! (aka great
holiday presents)
We’ll make a
tube for the
body (you can
add waist shaping if you want),
two tube-like
sleeves,
and
we’ll join it
all
together
and work with
lots of great colors into the yoke. This is a
sweater that’s good for men, women, and
children. We’ll meet every other week to
allow you time to knit between classes.

around the

you pick a Noni pattern, choosing colors ,
knit the bag and the flowers, share her felting tips. This class is a great opportunity to
take felting to a new level. You could also
make a bunch of Noni flowers to give as

be teaching this class, and you will learn

pm, $60 + tax & supplies
Here’s an easy, bottom up, seamless
sweater with a very nice colorful yoke
pattern in stranded fair isle. Lynda Bogel
is teaching this great class for first time
sweater knitters, or for those who haven’t
tried seamless sweaters yet. Knit in worsted
weight yarn the sweater is a fairly quick knit.
Join Lori Martin to make this quick and
easy baby bolero. This one-skein project (1
skein of Blue Sky Alpacas Cotton or any
worsted weight wool)
from Leigh Radford’s
One Skein book (a
required text for the
class) is perfect for
learning to make your
first sweater. Lori will show you to make
the sweater’s body, sleeves, and cool techniques for putting all the pieces together.
