Design 2 to make With 9mm (US 13) circular needle, cast on 48 stitches. 1st rib round: [k2, p2]to end. This round forms the rib pattern. Repeat the last round until hat measures 3cm/1¼ins from cast on edge. Change to 10mm (US 15) circular needle. 1st round (right side): knit to end. 2nd round (wrong side): purl to end. These 2 rounds form the garter stitch.
