Taking knitting on an adventure which will intrigue and possibly frustrate you by using wire and or fishing twine (not for beginners as it changes your concentration), and framing it all to make something unique for a small plant for indoors… or outside! 1.5 hr PRIMA w/shop Create a Cottage Needlecase: Master the French Knot Alexandra Pacey In this class Alexandra will teach you how to feel confident sewing a French knot, an incredibly versatile and decorative stitch. You will then make design and make an individual cottage needle case and use the French knot to add foliage and flowers. All materials will be provided with instruction sheets so you can do more French knots if you feel inspired after the class. This class is suitable for all ability levels and children are most welcome. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Experiment with Shisha Murray Forrest Shisha work is captivating for everyone because of the little mirrors… and in this workshop we will create a unique picture frame where we will experiment with the process. Everyone will complete something, but depending on your ability to control the little mirrors (as they like to jump about) and a needle and thread it will either be done beautifully or creatively! Beginners and children (8+ and accompanied by an adult) welcome, and a great chance to try something new. Instructions will be provided, so that even if it doesn’t work on the day, you can try again later. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Fast and Fun Fleecy Monsters Alexandra Pacey Learn to create a fleecy monster toy that is original and unique, quick and fun to make. In the class you will be given a fleecy abstract stitched shaped that you will transform into your own personal monster toy using hand sewing, embroidery and applique. You will be provided with some ideas to get you started and a full monster making kit. The techniques and ideas that you learn in the class should provide you with the skills to make your own toys at home. This class is suitable for all ability levels and children are most welcome. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Felt and Wooden Bead Necklace Alison Nicholson Alison will show you how to make colourful felt beads using wool tops and strands of silk. You will combine these with wooden beads that she will provide and string onto beading wire to make a stunningly vibrant necklace long enough to put over your head so no need for clumsy clasps. You can choose colours to suit your colouring and clothing so that your necklace will be entirely unique. Also suitable for children 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Finger Knitting: Chunky Accessories Nicole Line Nicole will take you through each stage of the process and show you how to make chunky knitted accessories from a selection of colourful yarns. This is a relaxing and achievable workshop for all. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Hand Sew a Hexagonal Xmas Decoration Paula Rafferty Discover the joy of hand piecing using one of the most ancient techniques. Paper piecing is simple, fast and portable. Fabric is sewn around a paper pattern, which allows the fabric to hold its shape. Using the very versatile hexagon shape we will construct a beautiful Christmas decoration which will enhance any tree. You will leave the class with the basic skills required to tackle much more complex and challenging projects. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop The Knitting & Stitching Show 2014 | Alexandra Palace - Make & Take Workshops 4 Introduction to Trapunto Quilting Ruth Singer Trapunto or Italian quilting is a fast, fun technique for creating raised texture on fabric. Unlike traditional quilting, in trapunto the stuffing is added between two stitched layers of fabric just in the areas required. Trapunto can be worked by hand or machine, but in this class we will use simple handstitching techniques to create a small sampler. This workshop is suitable for all levels of stitchers and is an introduction trapunto for those who have never done it before. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Make a Beaded Bracelet: Knit with Beads & Crochet Hook Jane Burns If you would like to learn how to apply beads to your knitting without painstakingly threading hundreds of beads onto your yarn first, this is the class for you. You will knit a cute beaded bracelet, whilst learning how to apply beads using a crochet hook as you knit. We will look at the difference between pre-stringing beads and using a crochet hook and discuss the benefits. This class is aimed at those who can knit and purl. You do need to know how to knit an I-cord (to learn this you can come to Jane Burn’s Knit an I-Cord class at 1pm on Thurs 9th). 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Knit a Napkin Ring: Take the Fear out of Double Pointed Needles Jane Burns Have you ever watched in awe as others knit their way through socks and mittens using double pointed needles? During this hour long class Jane will teach you how to cast on using double pointed needles, show you how to join your work into the round and get you knitting in the round with confidence. You will knit yourself a napkin ring with the materials provided. We will also discuss working from charts and the pro’s and con’s of knitting in the round. For this class you will need to be comfortable with knit and purl stitches and be able to cast on. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Needle Felted Pansy Brooch Fi Oberon This workshop is great for beginners and those with some experience of needle felting. Starting with a pre-formed and pre-dyed sheet material allows us to achieve great results within an hour. We will learn the basics and a couple of more advanced techniques; How to best use the different gauges of needles and how to simulate velvet by creating a ‘nap’ on the surface of the felt. By the end of the workshop you will have everything you need from materials to techniques to complete this lovely pansy brooch designed by Fi Oberon. Suitable for beginners and children aged 10 plus. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Knit an I-Cord Flower Brooch Jane Burns Learn how to knit i-cords, these narrow tubes of knitting, worked in the round on two double pointed needles are a must have skill in any knitters repertoire. Knitted i-cord can be used as an edging and as the basis for cute accessories. In this class Jane will teach you how to knit i-cord and construct your very own i-cord flower brooch. Once you have mastered the i-cord, you are ready to Make a Beaded Bracelet (3.30 Friday). Suitable for beginners and children age 10 plus but students must be able to knit and cast on. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Needle Felted Sheep with Wire Legs Fi Oberon This workshop is great for beginners and those with some experience of needle felting. Starting with a pre-formed felt body allows us to achieve great results within an hour. We will learn the basics and a couple of more advanced techniques; How to use the different gauges of needles for speedy construction and finer details, to creating a wool covered wire frame. By the end of the workshop you will have everything you need from materials to techniques to complete this lovely standing sheep designed by Fi Oberon. Suitable for all levels including children aged 10 plus. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop The Knitting & Stitching Show 2014 | Alexandra Palace - Needle Felting a Portrait Fi Oberon This workshop explores the craft of needle felting encouraging you to experience the equipment and materials used. We will look at using dyeing techniques to create a range of subtly different tones of colour, in this instance to create skin tones, a useful skill for creating creatures, foliage etc. Completely suitable for beginners and those with some experience you will have everything you need to create a stunning brooch or mini sculpture and gain skills for your own projects. Suitable for all levels and children aged 10 plus. 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Sandwich Stained Glass Murray Forrest Create your own small stained glass panel from scratch in an hour! Learn to handle and cut glass safely, understand the differences between the stained glass found in windows and that used in lampshades. Most importantly though create your own framed piece to take away using the techniques you’ve learnt! Beginners and children (8+ and accompanied by an adult) welcome, and a great chance to try something new, even for those who say they’re not creative! 1 hr PRIMA w/shop Silk Ribbon Embroidery: Beginners’ Guide Bella Lane A perfect class opportunity to get in to silk ribbon embroidery. With fine application, this technique can be used widely in all forms of stitching, bringing to your very own masterpiece that connoisseur needlework touch. Silk ribbon embroidery stitches and techniques can also complement all kinds of embellishment on clothes, especially in fashion as they can be bold and easy to fill large open spaces in garments. Tip: make sure you have a nice manicure before your class starts as the silk ribbons are very delicate to handle! See demonstrations of techniques and get plenty of hints and tips. Then have a play with some of Colourcraft C&A Limited’s fabulous and easy to use products such as 3D Fabric Medium, Lutradur®, Markal® Paintstiks and Brusho® Sprays. The 3D Medium is a versatile, heat activated, expanding medium we will use to create effects ranging from subtle to daring with lutradur ® adding to the effects. How about accentuating these stunning effects by spritzing with the gorgeous Brusho® sprays, gilding with Markal paintstiks, embellishing with sequins, foils and more. A real opportunity to have a go with a wide variety of exciting products. Suitable for any level. 1 hr w/shop Wonderfully Simple Crochet Washcloth Sophie Wire If you can crochet even a little (hold the hook and yarn correctly, and make a chain), and are looking for a rewarding little project then this workshop will be perfect. Made from a variety of colours, you will get going on a washcloth made from sturdy cotton, and learn this simple but effective stitch pattern, and how to carry the yarn.
