Neal Benoit On Leg Two:
The Preakness
Everyone Can Be A Dynamic
Speaker: Yes, I Mean You!
Neal Benoit will be here for the second leg
of the Triple Crown, the Preakness, on
Thursday, May 14, at 7:00 PM. Neal covered
the Kentucky Derby last month and his talk
this month will have the same format –
complete with on-screen race and racetrack
analyses. Neal’s website is a dedicated to
educating and entertaining fans of the sport.
He has been an avid horseplayer for 35 years
and travels regularly to horse racing venues
throughout the United States. Check out the
website – you’ll be impressed! The website is
not just about wagering. There are all kinds of
stories, articles, profiles, and interviews on
handicapping and on the many people involved
in all aspects of the sport. Neal will also be here
on Thursday, June 4, starting at 7:00 PM for

On Monday, May 18, starting at 6:30 PM,
Mark Grimm will present an entertaining,
thought-provoking program that will leave
attendees with a new approach to public
speaking. This revelation will allow them to feel
more at ease, make their presentations much
clearer and more relevant to audiences, and
provide an easy-to-follow path to becoming
dynamic. Learn why most speakers prepare the
wrong way for presentations. Hear why Mark
once hid in the men's room when it was his turn
to speak. He shares his personal path from
nervous presenter to paid speaker, a path
anyone can follow. Don't miss an inspirational

American Cinema and World
War II Film Series Concludes
The Town of Colonie Conservation
Advisory Council holds its annual Conservation
Day on Saturday, May 2, on the library’s
grounds. Trees, compost and literature will be
distributed from 9:00 AM-Noon.
Our year-long America Cinema and WW
II film series concludes with four films hosted
by Lenny Zapala – film expert and Director of
the Menands Public Library. Our first eight
films have been very well-received – as were
Lenny’s introductions, comments, and
newsreels and shorts from the 1940s! For the
final four, we will be switching to Tuesday
nights (starting time for all four will be 6:30
PM): May 5th: Hangman Also Die – directed by
German ex-patriot Fritz Lang with a
screenplay by another ex-patriot (and
Communist) Bertolt Brecht. Lenny will be
talking about resistance in the Nazi occupied
countries and those who fled Hitler and came
to the USA. June 9th: Miracle of Morgan’s Creek
– satire written and directed by Preston Sturges
with Lenny commenting on “the war at
home.” July 7th: The Story of G.I. Joe – directed
by William Wellman and based on the writings
of Ernie Pyle and the Italian campaign. August
11th: The Best Years of Our Lives – the William
Wyler classic on “the boys come home.” As
with all the films in the series, Lenny will be
showing a newsreel and a short film from that
era.

SATURDAY- People to People Student Ambassadors- From
9:30 AM-12:30 PM.
2 SATURDAY- North Eastern New York Orchid Society- Alan
Koch, owner of Gold Country Orchids in Lincoln, CA, will
speak on “Understanding the Brazilian Cattleya Alliance.”
This talk is designed to give a clear picture of their diversity, and
how to grow them. It will cover where the species are found in
the wild and how to use this information to grow them well. At
1:00 PM.

MONDAY- Hudson Mohawk Bird Club: Casual Birding in
Australia and New Zealand- Speaker Ken Harper is a local
nature photographer who concentrates mainly on bird
photography. Last October he and his wife Linda took a trip to
Australia and New Zealand. He calls this program "Casual
Birding in Australia and New Zealand" because the trip was
planned as a vacation and sight-seeing and birding was done as
an ad hoc adventure while seeing and doing other things. Even
so, he was able to accumulate over 85 new species. The
program will be a photo journal of the trip concentrating on the
birds while still giving a feel for the beauty of the two countries.

7 THURSDAY- South Colonie Schools Student Art Exhibit
Reception- Parents, students, and friends are invited to view the
art work of students in all grade levels. The exhibit runs from
May 2-28. The reception is from 4:00-6:00 PM.
9 SATURDAY- Kaplan SAT/PSAT National Practice Test DayA practice test is one of the best ways to get ready for the real
thing. You will know exactly what to expect on test day, get a
complete analysis of your results, and learn exclusive strategies
to improve your score. Students are invited to take free practice
tests for the SAT or the new PSAT. Students need to bring a
calculator and number 2 pencils. All students taking this
Practice Test will receive a free 6 page Score Report. Score
reports include your score and performance diagnostics. These
will be emailed back to families within 2 weeks of the test.

11 MONDAY- AARP of Colonie--Chapter 2873- New members
and/or guests are welcome. At 1:00 PM.
11 MONDAY- Mystery/Suspense Book Discussion Group- The
group meets on the second Monday of each month in the
Youth Services Activity Room. This month’s discussion will be
on Louise Penny’s book Still Life. Copies of the book are
available ahead of time at the Circulation Desk. At 1:30 PM.
The Friends of the Library gather every second Tuesday of the
month at 6:30 PM in the Youth Services Activity Room for
their regular meeting.

11 MONDAY- Chinese Film/Discussion Series- I-Hsin Wu, Adjunct
Professor of Sociology at UAlbany and a member of the NYS
Office for the Aging’s Targeting Workgoup working with the
Chinese- American community, is currently hosting a
film/discussion series titled “Introducing Chinese Culture
Through Chinese Films.” The series began last November and
will be continuing through June! This month’s movie is The Blue
Kite on Monday, May 11, at 6:00 PM. The Blue Kite “is a 1993
drama film…banned by the Chinese government upon its
completion (along with a ten-year ban on filmmaking imposed on
[the director])….The Blue Kite serves as one of the quintessential
examples of China's Fifth Generation filmmaking, and in
particular reveals the impact the various political movements,
including the Anti-Rightist Movement and the Cultural
Revolution, had upon directors who grew up in the 1950s and
1960s. The film won the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International
Film Festival, and Best Film at the Hawaii International Film
Festival, both in 1993.” Up next: Monday, June 15: Yi Yi: A One
and a Two. At 6:00 PM.
12 TUESDAY- Technology & Hearing Loss- Dr. Christine Raffo,
audiologist and owner of Madison & Saratoga Hearing Centers,
will speak on hearing loss, diagnosis, and treatment. If you
struggle with hearing well and/or communicating with a loved
one who has trouble hearing, please come and hear how you can
benefit through advancements in technology. Dr. Raffo will
address questions and provide free screenings on-site following
the presentation for those who wish. At 1:00 PM.
12 TUESDAY- Navigating Daily Life with a Hearing LossNavigating daily life with a hearing loss can be challenging and
frustrating. Come to this Hearing Loss Association of America,
Albany Chapter program to talk with others and learn what you
can do to make things easier. Learn coping strategies, tips for
communicating more effectively at work and home, using
assistive listening devices and advocating for yourself. At 6:00 PM.

16 SATURDAY- Capital District Genealogical Society: Legal
Issues/Restrictions and Where to Find the Answers- Guest
speaker John Thomas McGuire, attorney and historian from
the Albany County Bar Association Speaker Bureau, will talk
about places that are open to the public for genealogical
research. The speaker/program begins at 1:00 PM followed by
the Computer Group at 2:30 PM.
18 MONDAY- Everyone Can Be A Dynamic Speaker: Yes, I Mean

19 TUESDAY- Albany Area Senior Orchestra Concert- Come
enjoy a performance by the Albany Area Senior Orchestra, a
group of mature musicians who enjoy taking their music to
others, especially those who have few other opportunities to
hear live music. Typical selections include music by world
famous composers Borodin, Dvorak, Handel and Rossini as
well as medleys of folk songs, movie and show tunes, plus a
march or two! There is a continuing need for new members,
especially people who play string instruments. At 2:00 PM.
19 TUESDAY- Story Circle of the Capital District- A group of
people who love stories, meets on odd numbered months (Jan.,
Mar., May, etc.) at the Colonie Town Library to share stories
which are works in progress. The stories should be no longer
than 10 minutes, unless previous arrangements are made. The
teller controls how much, if any, feedback happens. No reading
of stories, just telling, please. Listeners and new storytellers

19 TUESDAY- Colonie Tuesday Night Live Poets' Corner- Local
poets and writers of all ages are invited to present six to ten
minutes of their original work at this open reading forum. The

21 THURSDAY- Ask the Experts for Answers to Your Small
Business Questions- SCORE Chapter 127, based in Albany,
will host a panel of experts, who can answer your questions on
how to best structure and develop your small business, from
start-up, to financing, to managing, to success. The panel will
include: Eric M. Leander, an attorney specializing in Corporate
and Business law; Sid Ramotar of the Small Business
Administration (SBA); William J. Mather, Jr., insurance agent
for HMS Agency, and several SCORE mentors specializing in
business planning, marketing, and financial planning. SCORE
is an organization of experienced volunteers, affiliated with the
Small Business Administration, who mentor people currently
running a business, or starting a new business. Representatives
from SCORE at the event will provide further information on
how to arrange future counseling and mentoring sessions, and

Friends of the Library News
Summer is coming and with it comes the opening of the
Friends of the Library Book Nook at the Crossings. We will be
there every Saturday during the Farmer’s Market from May 16
to September 12, from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. Do stop and visit.
Remember, all hardcover books are $1, paperbacks are $.50,
and children’s books are also $.50.
If you would like to help, consider volunteering for even an
hour to sell books, and if you have donations of books, please
do bring them by. We are always in need of gently used
children’s books.
All proceeds from Friends events are used to help the
library obtain equipment, furniture and material it might not
otherwise be able to afford.
We hope to see you at all our events, and remember the
Friends meet the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM in
the Youth Services Activity Room. All are welcome!
Dynamic Speaker continued
Former TV news anchor Mark Grimm is a public speaking
coach, media trainer and message strategist. He has made
hundreds of presentations and appears often as a
communication or political analyst for local ABC, NBC, CBS,
and Fox affiliates. Mark conducted one-on-one interviews with
Presidents Bush and Clinton and hosts the Siena Alumni
Connection interview program on FM 88.3 The Saint. He has
been an adjunct media professor for over 10 years. Mark will
read brief excerpts from his book, Everyone Can Be A Dynamic
Speaker: Yes, I Mean You!, that will highlight key points. But don't
expect an evening of being read to. The session will be

Microsoft Excel 2010 Basics I: Thursday, May 21 @ 6:00 PM This
class will explore the basic features of Excel. Students will learn
how to create a worksheet, perform simple calculations, and enter
basic data. Students should be familiar with the Windows
environment, the keyboard and be able to use a mouse.

Microsoft Excel 2010 Basics II: Thursday, May 28 @ 6:00 PM
This class is designed for library patrons who have completed the
Introduction to Excel class or are already familiar with the basics
of entering and manipulating data in an Excel worksheet. Topics
such as graphs, charts, advanced formulas, and data manipulation
will be explored. (Intermediate)
Advanced Excel 2010--Charts/Graphing, Data Analysis,
Statistics: No class this month; call for waiting list This is an
advanced class designed for individuals who have a solid
understanding of Excel and who are looking to use it for data
analysis purposes. The class will cover how to create
charts/graphs, use pivot tables for analysis, common statistical
functions and Excel's free downloadable analysis add-in,

Microsoft Access 2010 Beginning/Intermediate Class:
Thursdays, May 7 & 14, from 7:00-9:00 PM This is a two-part class
teaching the basics of Microsoft Access 2010 databases. In class
one, database fundamentals, creating tables and relationships,
importing/exporting data will be covered. In class two, creating

Getting Organized with Evernote: Friday, May 15, from 2:00-4:00
PM With all the things to do and remember, it's a wonder we stay
on top of everything! Luckily, there's an app for that - a free and
powerful productivity tool for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS
called Evernote. From making notes and checklists, to attaching
files, setting alarms, recording audio and more – we will practice
using all the important features of the app, and discuss inspiring
ways to use Evernote to bring efficiency and organization to your

Learn how to get the most out of the new Windows interface,
customize your home screen, navigate with a mouse or touch,
