PRESS RELEASE The School District of Lee County Communications Department Phone: 239-461-8420 Fax: 239-337-8505 Website: http://www.leeschools.net Date: May 22, 2015 Contact: Ms. Aida C. Saldivar, Principal, San Carlos Park Elementary School, 239-267-1234 SAN CARLOS PARK ELEMENTARY STUDENTS READ ONE MILLION MINUTES FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR Subject: It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No…. it’s the San Carlos Park Elementary School (SCPE) Super Readers! Students at San Carlos Park Elementary School are doing it again they are on the brink of achieving their school-wide goal of reading for one million minutes by the end of the school year. The students once again accepted the challenge from Principal Aida C. Saldivar, a.k.a. The Minutes Menace, to read for one million minutes by the end of the school year. If the students reach their goal, San Carlos Park Elementary will become a Super Hero Haven on Tuesday, June 2nd. The students will have a day filled with a variety of super hero activities and games, bounce houses, a martial arts demonstration and more! Since January, students have been going home each night and reading. Every Thursday the minutes are collected and counted, but it hasn’t been easy for students to reach their goal. The Minutes Menace has been up to no good as she has tried her hardest to distract the students from their reading. At one point, she attacked the media center, causing it to be closed for a few hours. On a different day, one of SCPE’s reading coaches was found tied up in a chair! Her tricks haven’t stopped or slowed down the SCPE Super Readers; her shenanigans have only made them work harder. They are so close to reaching their goal and are so excited to celebrate their hard work! This was all a part of Saldivar’s plan for her students. “Daily independent reading is so important,” she shared. “Research shows that there is a direct correlation on student achievement.” And the proof is in the pudding! Ever since San Carlos started doing these reading challenges, the students have made tremendous gains. The hope is that it will continue again this year. The SCPE Super Hero Haven Day is scheduled for June 2 nd, starting at 8:30 a.m. on the school campus. Thanks to the help of local sponsors and the school PTO, the SCPE Super Readers are fighting the crime of illiteracy one minute at a time! San Carlos Park Elementary School is located at 17282 Lee Road, Fort Myers. ### Vision: To Be A World-Class School System
