What We Do
Three Key INgredients of SDF
INSPIRING. IN-DEPTH. INTERACTIVE.
√ INSPIRING - Main Sessions
Every year SDF invites 40-50 brightest minds from around the world in the T.I.M.E.+
[Technology, Information, Media, Enterprise] areas. About 20-25 sessions take place
over the two-day conference, with the formats including solos, panels, conversations
and performances.
√ IN-DEPTH - DeepDive Series
Parallel to the Main Sessions are SDF DeepDive Sessions, a series of special symposiums
designed to take a deeper look into some of the key industry and social issues, and
draft practical solutions with recognized specialists. The solutions put forward at the
sessions are shared with the public via broadcasting, campaigns and policy proposals,
allowing them to trigger positive change in our society.
√ INTERACTIVE - Networking
During the conference and throughout the year SDF organizes networking
opportunities that revolve around the theme(s) of our talks, ranging from casual
meet-ups and official gatherings to exhibitions and concerts. We believe face-to-face
interaction will always remain the most effective way to communicate and collaborate
with SDF community members.

Conscious Curiosity
Searching for the Next Breakthrough
Let’s begin with a question: Have things always been this way?
Most of the discoveries, inventions and innovations that spearheaded human progress
stemmed from asking “What if?” Curiosity, questioning taken-for-grantedness and
envisioning a new world of possibilities, has been a powerful driving force behind
humanity’s quests for the unknown.
The inquisitive quests, however, seem to have been put on hold as we experience a
prolonged period of sluggish growth. Technological breakthroughs with transformative
potentials have become a rarity. For us to find new ways forward against this
somewhat stagnant atmosphere, we now more than ever need to rekindle our
‘conscious curiosity’ that taps into our inventiveness and creativity with
responsibilities for the future of humanity.
Coming out of age are technological innovations that revolve around ‘connectedness’
and ‘intelligence’: The web of connections continues to expand involving ever more
devices and people as robots evolve from being predictable to being adaptive and
intuitive. Amidst this change, conscious curiosity will help us see the unseen and tackle
the problems we face in novel ways.
Marking the 25th anniversary of SBS the Seoul Digital Forum 2015, SBS’s flagship
knowledge-sharing project, will explore the world with our renewed conscious curiosity.
At SDF2015, we will ready ourselves to break the mold, face the changes and venture
into a new realm of possibilities.

The Warped Side of Our Universe: Insights from Human Curiosity
Marking the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, renowned theoretical physicist Kip
Thorne takes us on a fanciful voyage in a spacecraft, to explore the warped side of our universe: objects and
phenomena made from warped space and warped time instead of from matter. The spacecraft carries humans
through a hypothetical wormhole to the heart of a distant galaxy. There they encounter and explore a gigantic
black hole: They probe the tornado-like whirl of space caused by the black hole's spin; they probe the black hole's
horizon, from which nothing can escape, and the extreme slowing of time near the horizon. And they send probes
into the black hole and watch as the black hole collides with a second black hole, creating a wild storm in the
fabric of space and time. The storm generates ripples called gravitational waves that travel out through the
universe and back to earth, carrying pictures that reveal to humans on earth deep mysteries of our universe's
warped side. Through this intergalactic journey, the man who imagined wormholes shows and shares with us the
power of science that has blossomed from human curiosity.

Telsa’s Electric Mission: Taking Batteries to a Whole New Level
Electric vehicles [EVs] are all the rage. While the auto industry is known for high barriers to entry, the catalyst
for the electric turn was a Californian startup founded in 2003, Tesla. The company has now set out to be more
than an EV maker: it aims to be a driving force behind the clean energy revolution. What lies at the heart of
Tesla’s innovative capability and ambition is the battery technology. The man in charge of developing the very
technology, JB Straubel, tells us how his Li-ion batteries can revolutionize not only the way we drive our cars but
the way energy is stored both inside and outside our home.

Technology, Our New Emotional Language
What we now call a 'phone' has become an integral part of our lives: it is a 'revolution' in the palm of our hands,
powered by the advancement of technology. And this revolution was possible because technology met design, our
emotional language. What does it mean to interpret technology as an element of design? What roles design serve
in bridging technology and humanity? The man who dreams of a phone's next evolution and innovation, Lee Min
Hyouk is on a quest to be the next changemaker. As the leader of the design team of the Galaxy Series, he talks
about what curiosity is for designers.

The Future of the Internet is Powered by You
The popup message “No Internet Connection” is every device user’s nightmare that leaves them unable to
communicate. Open Garden has taken aim at this often precarious onlineness that has become synonymous with
‘being connected to the Internet’, with its off-the-grid messaging app FireChat. Making use of Bluetooth, WiFi
and peer-to-peer networks, the app allows each device to directly connect to other devices nearby without having
to depend on the Internet. The technology has proven to be a powerful communication tool for outdoor festivals,
classroom chats, news gathering and civil uprisings as seen during Hong Kong’s umbrella revolution. And the
magic of multipeer connectivity is that the more people use it, the better it gets. Micha Benoliel, CEO and cofounder of Open Garden, tells us how ubiquitous mobile connectivity can reshape the way we connect and
communicate - and how the future of connectivity will be powered by you, for you.

Embracing Cultural Shifts for Good
In 1989, Korean American environmentalist Danny Seo started an environmental group at the age of 12 that
soon grew to the largest teenage green nonprofit in the USA. Today, at 37, Danny is the CEO and founder of
Danny Seo Media Ventures, a for-profit company that inspires millions of people how to marry sustainability
with style into their everyday lives. As the Editor in Chief of his own namesake magazineNaturally, Danny Seo,
Danny will talk about the importance of self-transformation in building a mission-based company. Just like
trends, societies have cultural shifts that must be identified, embraced and used to evolve your own work and
messaging. It’s the only way you can achieve the greater good and reach the largest audience possible, which in
turn leads to incredible transformations in efforts to protect our natural biodiversity. Danny will guide us
through his own remarkable journey from child activist to lobbyist to author to TV personality to Editor in Chief
and how you, too, can use your passion to influence and inspire others.

The Largest Cleanup in History
Dutch inventor Boyan Slat made waves in 2013 when his concept to rid the oceans of plastic by making use of the
natural currents went viral on the internet. One year later, having worked with a team of 100 scientists and
engineers, he showed that a single of his systems, deployed for 10 years, can clean up almost half the infamous
‘Great Pacific Garbage Patch’, an area where a vast amount of plastic concentrates. He then went on to raise 2.2
million dollars through crowdfunding, and received the United Nations’ highest environmental award by
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2014. At SDF 2015 Boyan will share his progress and how his team is
preparing for the largest cleanup in history.

The Supercell Story
In the summer of 2010, Supercell was born and the founders had one goal in mind - making great games that
people would play for years. Little did they know they would become in the ensuing few years one the fastestgrowing gaming companies ever with mega-hit titles Clash of Clans, Hay Day and Boom Beach. An important
part of their story is their belief in the power of extremely small and independent teams of passionate people;
being small means you need less management and fewer processes, both of which just make it more fun to work.
Ilkka Paananen tells us Supercell’s story in the making and how its financial success has given the startup a
unique opportunity to think very long term, be very patient, take big risks and do things that most people haven’t
done before.

Quantum beyond Nano
In the beginning of the 20th century, quantum physics emerged as the ultimate principle of nature and universe,
and became the basis of modern science and technology. Quantum physics began as an explanation of how
material and light interact, provided new ways of synthesizing materials, and revolutionized the information
technology in the second half of the 20th century through the invention of semiconductor devices, laser and
others. Nanotechnology, which has pursued miniaturization through quantum physics, cannot avoid the fatal
limit of ambiguity between 0 and 1 due to the quantum uncertainty principle. Quantum physics, which so far has
been the principle for hardware only, opens a new era of quantum information technology providing the
principles for not only hardware, but also software and operating systems. While nanotechnology takes the
passive stance to avoid the quantum uncertainty principle, quantum information science actively uses quantum
principles and introduces new technologies that are impossible to achieve with nanotechnology including
quantum computers, quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation, quantum imaging, quantum metrology and
quantum sensors.

Quantum Security Technology for 5G
SK Telecom, the leader of the world's first 3G and 4G technology, is now focusing on the new item called
"Quantum Safe Network". It has been well-known that quantum physics can enhance modern security
technology. Modern security that is based on the complexity of mathematics - also known as, number crunchinghas been threatened by Moore's Law. To overcome this problem, SK Telecom is going to commercialize a
quantum cryptography system this year to prevent network eavesdropping and a quantum true random number
generator in a silicon chip next year. These technologies will bring modern and future security to a whole new
level.

Beyond Boundaries: The New Neuroscience of Connecting Brains with Machines
What if you could control devices just with your thoughts? Pioneering neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis illustrates
how state-of-the-art research on brain-machine interfaces makes it possible for the brains of primates to interact
directly with mechanical, computational and virtual devices without any interference of the body muscles or
sensory organs. His recent experiments provide us with clues to the fundamental links between brain signals and
physical activities, while serving as an experimental paradigm aimed at testing the design of mind-controlled
prosthetic devices such as the exoskeleton which allowed a paraplegic man to literally kick off the 2014 World
Cup. How will the new neuroscience bring changes beyond our imagination, by using our imagination?

Surprises from Smartwatch Designed to Sense Emotion
Over fifteen years ago, Rosalind Picard set out to see if she could create the world’s first wearable sensors to
measure emotion. As part of this effort, she and her team built a sensor that could measure emotional arousal
from your wrist. They watched the sensor data go high with engagement in students’ active problem solving tasks.
They also found surprisingly high activation during certain phases of sleep, and showed that these sleep peaks
were more helpful in predicting memory consolidation than were EEG readings. While working to measure
stress to help children with autism, they discovered that activation deep in the brain, especially during seizures,
also maps to patterns that can be read electrically from the surface of the skin on the wrist. These, and other
surprising findings have led Picard and the Empatica team to develop a new sensor, Embrace, which will soon be
available to the general public to help people better understand their sleep and stress, and to give alerts for
seizures. Picard will demonstrate some of the basic wrist-worn sensor capabilities and tell stories about the
surprising findings in this talk.

Melomics: Computational Creativity and the Genetics of Music
Computer science is changing our lives. From the assembly line to social interaction, ubiquitous computing
devices and the Internet provide the opportunity to reshape humanity - to “update” humanity, we might say.
Online free education, open access to scientific research, or e-democracy are but building blocks of a modern Age
of Enlightenment that has just started. Artificial Intelligence [AI] is the field of computing dedicated to model
intelligent behavior, and much is expected from AI in coming years. Apart from mining big data or designing
domestic robots, AI also focuses on one of the more intriguing aspects of the humankind: creativity. Francisco

Redefining ‘Intelligence’: What Can We Expect from Artificial Intelligence?
60 years ago the legendary computer scientist John McCarthy coined the term “Artificial Intelligence [AI]”,
defining it as ‘the science and engineering of making intelligent machines’. The field of AI has since made major
strides, making it a key part of many of today’s applications ranging from robotics and electronics to customer
service and healthcare. Is this increasing prevalence of AI something we should be cautious about or delve into?
Bringing together three brilliant scientists – Miguel Nicolelis, Rosalind Picard and Francisco Vico - this session
invites us to rethink what it means for machines to be ‘intelligent’ and how we can make our technology not
simply more powerful, but more meaningful for the people who will live with it.

Creativity is the power that manifests when you are being yourself unrestrained by what already exists. Then
what is it that makes you, you? It is curiosity - the power that is private and unique, the power that only you
yourself can own, helping you become who you are, not anybody else. What triggers creativity is not rooted in the
width or depth of one’s theoretical knowledge but rather in questions that naturally or instinctually spring out of
curiosity. Creativity is a gift that an autonomous person offers the world.

Digital Parenting: Being Parents in the Digital Age
“My kid spends too much time on his computer shutting himself up in his room.”
“Why wouldn’t my parents let me use my smartphone when they use theirs all the time?”
Tensions are running high in many families over the children’s overuse of digital devices. Parents are not happy
that their kids are glued to the screens neglecting their studies; children are upset because parents don’t seem to
understand things they do with devices are not just time-killers but are enjoyable and often necessary for them.
Things have changed drastically over the past decade. In this new digital world, what is it that our children feel
and experience? What are some of the untold, unnoticed stories in today’s parent-child relationships? The keys
for a conversation can be found if we pay more attention to our changeable minds. In this session, Doh Young
Yim seeks to discover hidden pieces of experience that will reconnect parents and children in the digital era.

Experimenting with Landscapes of the Future
Imagine a dance floor that turns your dance moves into electricity. Or a dress that reveals how you feel about
others. Daan Roosegaarde, creative director of the Dutch social design lab Studio Roosegaarde, has been
delivering boundary-blurring interactive landscapes by pulling technology out of the screen and integrating it
into the real world. Best known for his internationally awarded projects such as Dune, Intimacy 2.0 and
Sustainable Dance Floor, Roosegaarde’s latest projects take his conscious experiments a step further. Smart
Highways, being trialled in the Netherlands together with Heijmans Infrastructure, make use of strips that
absorb solar energy during the day and glow at night, making roadways safer, more energy-efficient and
beautiful. The Smog Free Project aims to build parks in Beijing that allow people to see the sun again using an
air-purifying electronic vacuum cleaner. Drawing on his projects, Roosegaarde canvasses landscapes of the
future that merge curiosity and social responsibility, fantasy and technology.

The Future of the Video Industry:
Surfing on the Riptide of Disruptive Innovation
The entire media industry is moving through digital disruption. Some of the biggest players in
the music industry are now digital and the comics industry has also undergone its digital
transformation with the Webtoon as its main content format. The picture is rather foggy,
however, when it comes to newspaper and broadcasting companies who are still struggling to
identify the right strategies for their digital adaptation. This session aims to search for
possible solutions for the video industry and its market from other media industries which
have successfully gone digital, enduring their fair share of economic pain and sacrifice. We
have asked venture capitalists to assess the video industry’s attractiveness and tried to identify
new possibilities the Internet of Things can bring to the industry. The aim is to help the
industry more effectively surf on the digital wave rather than being swept away or
overwhelmed by it. We have tried to find the right question, not the right answer. We have
listened to the real stories from the industry, not theoretical discourses. We want to share
what we have learned with people who care about the future of Korea’s media industry. It is
what his session is for.

Digital Parenting:
How to Go with Teens and Technologies in the Digital World
Are the generations who grew up surrounded by digital technology and media fundamentally
different from their parents? Parents are not quite sure how to teach their children to be
responsible users of digital media such as online games and smartphones. This DeepDive
session unravels the issue of teenagers’ overuse of digital media by putting it in the context of
parent-child relationships. We first illustrate the generational differences in their perceptions
of digital media based on a survey of 1,000 parent-child pairs. We then identify how their
relationships affect conflicts at home and digital media overuse. The real family stories
gathered from our five-month workshops show how parents and children have come to agree
on a set of rules by better appreciating each other’s needs through conversations. Last, we aim
to identify policy demands by bringing together various stakeholders including government
officials, industry representatives, parents and students, and draw up a list of key issues and
policy tasks to guide the future generations’ digital media use. The session will share with the
audience the results of our research, practical conflict resolution tips and a series of
conversations on how to find better solutions not by disconnecting from digital devices, but by
learning smarter ways to live with them.

History in Brief
Each year SDF strives to canvass a timely agenda that addresses key issues and trends
shaping the future of our societies and industries.
2004
The Forum opened under the theme of Digital Convergence, focusing on the question of how
businesses could strengthen their competitiveness in the era that we call the “digital age.”
2005
Dramatically increasing technological capabilities had many people wondering where such
capabilities were taking us and for what purpose. Under the theme Quo Vadis Ubiquitous:
Charting a New Digital Society, participants came to a consensus that it was not simply
about the stunning capabilities of technologies, but about how man could use those
technologies to make life better.
2006
Under the theme Being Intelligent: The Next Digital Evolution, the Forum helped to unmask
some of the remarkable progress that many industries have made in developing intelligent
technologies. As we did so, we also discovered the need to change some of our existing
systems in order to experience the full potential of these innovations.
2007
The Forum was held under the theme Media Big Bang! Impact on Business & Society.
Participants shared their extensive insights on how media is being redefined, and exchanged
ideas on how to cope with the economic, political and social implications of this.
2008
The Forum was held under the theme Imagination: Explore T.I.M.E. (Technology,
Information, Media & Entertainment), Space and Beyond. The Forum examined the power
of imagination to inspire change and evolution in order to push the human race beyond.
2009
Under the theme Story: A New Chapter, the Forum explored the innovative and inspiring
‘stories’ of the digital age from the T.I.M.E. + industries, while also reflecting on how the
global financial crisis handed the world a major opportunity to rethink conventional
paradigms.
2010
Wrapping up the first decade of the new millennium, SDF2010 was held under the theme
Renaissance Now: Shaping Another Breakthrough to discuss how we can craft and propel a
new millennium Renaissance. The Forum contemplated the Renaissance’s legacy of
encouraging a daring and creative spirit and explored who will be the Renaissance men and
women to shape the coming breakthroughs.
2011
Themed Connected: Into a Shared Future, SDF2011 delved into the true meaning of
connectedness amidst the transformative mobile revolution. Recognizing that connectedness
is deeply rooted in history, the Forum discussed how we could make the most of technologyenabled hyperconnectivity for us to become more active agents of positive change and
innovation.
2012
Extending our gaze beyond hyperconnectivity, SDF2012 was held under the theme
Coexistence: Technology, Humanity and Great Hope for the Future. The event aimed to
carve out new imperatives for meaningful coexistence between humans and technology, and
how the coexistence can be materialized.
2013
Looking back at the decade of SDF, the 10th Anniversary SDF put forward ECOllaboration:
Solutions for Tomorrow as the theme to pave the way for the next decade of vision-making.
Putting on center stage the notion of a Collaborative Ecosystem, the event explored
conditions for and promises of successful collaboration to build a sustainable and brighter
tomorrow.
2014
SDF Season 2 commenced under the theme Innovative Wisdom: Technology for the
Common Good. The Forum embarked on a new journey towards a more mature, sustainable
and collective happiness – and a key to begin our successful journey, we believe, lies in
‘innovative wisdom’.

Creating Media & Business Opportunities for Our Visionaries
We offer our visionaries unique media opportunities. Through our broadcast network, SBS, we offer headline
news coverage of the Forum [*reference links below] and nationwide broadcasting of key speeches/sessions

venue. Each year around 200 journalists and correspondents from home and abroad register, generating
thousands of print and online articles.
Over the past decade, SDF has also served as an exclusive business platform and coordinated some of the
most prestigious business opportunities in the Korean market for leading global companies such as Google,
Samsung, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Viacom, Facebook, Twitter, Disney and many others. We closely collaborate
with our visionaries to make their participation as rewarding as possible in every aspect.
