Art Literacy Program Expands Students’ Skills
The 2013-14 school year was an opportunity for students to experience a variety of new and interesting
artmaking tools and techniques. Nestucca Valley Elementary School, Garibaldi Grade School, and Cedar Creek
Child Care Center all participated in the program again this year and helped CAP reach over 450 kids! Being able
to bring the program right to the classroom ensures that every student can take part, without concerns around
family finances and transportation. It is a privilege, indeed, to be able to work with these young people and to see
in their faces the joy of artistic creation.
October began the year with Suminagashi printmaking, followed in November with sketchbook-making
using the Suminagashi printed paper created the month before (these sketchbooks were used for the remainder
of the year to record ideas and images from Art Lit lessons). January was Joan Miró month and students learned
how to do automatic drawing and frottage (texture rubbings). In February, Georgia O’Keeffe and big watercolor
flowers were the subject. Then came impasto painting with palette knives in the style of Vincent Van Gogh, color
study collage under iconic image transparencies inspired by Andy Warhol and Pop Art, and, wrapping up the year,
a study of Mary Cassatt and limited palette monoprints.
It was a year of trying new things and using our imaginations, and students consistently demonstrated
their ability to remember information and let their creative juices flow.
Special thanks to organizations that granted funds for the 2013-14 Art Literacy Program:
Nestucca Valley School District, Neah-Kah-Nie School District, Spirit Mountain Community Fund,
Tillamook County Cultural Coalition, Nestucca Jr/Sr High School Community 101 Program,
Neskowin Community Association, Nesko Women’s Club

Slug Soup Full to the Brim!
CAP’s annual kids art day camp, Slug Soup, reached new heights this summer. Participants numbered 101,
an all-time high! Of the 16 classes offered, only one class was less than full, and only less by one student! So,
this was the best-attended Slug Soup in the program’s history and we are thrilled to have had so many enthusiastic kids with us for the week. Early sign-ups are becoming a must!
Held again at Nestucca Jr/Sr High School in Cloverdale (what a great venue!), classes included two preschool “variety packs” centered around flowers and paper projects and two Kg-1st grade classes focused on art
about favorite songs and favorite pets. Offered to kids in 2nd grade and older were two craft workshops and
classes in an assortment of art forms that included sculpture from recycled materials, encaustic painting, puppet
creation, pin-hole and digital photography, quilting, song-writing, calligraphy, watercolor painting, intricate paper
-cutting, and fantasy creature drawing.
The week culminated in a spirited celebration of the visual and performing arts; the hallways were lined
with inspired 2- and 3-dimensional artwork, a parade of paper windsocks wound through the crowd, and the
“stage” hosted a hilarious puppet show and original songs performed by the songwriters themselves! Next year
will be Slug Soup’s 20th, so plan to join us for a special week June 22 - 26, 2015.

its 2014 Art Literacy Program.
Nestucca Valley School District - $3,000 was contributed to CAP for the 2013-14 Art Literacy Program at Nestucca Valley Elementary School. This most generous gift is renewable each year as district funds
are available.
Tillamook County Cultural Coalition (TCCC) - The county-wide distributor of Oregon Cultural Trust
funds, TCCC granted CAP $2,000 for support of its Art Literacy Program during 2014. CAP is honored to be a
recipient of TCCC funds two years in a row.

CAP Board News
The Community Arts Project Board is pleased to
welcome Rosalina Wong as a new member. Rosalina
brings many talents to the organization, including
knowledge of databases and technology and a grounded
business sense. She owns a software consulting company
with her husband and is a CPA. She is also a frequent volRosalina Wong, new
unteer in the Art Literacy Program at Nestucca Valley EleCAP board member
mentary where her son is a student. Rosalina, her husband, and two children live in Neskowin. Welcome, Rosalina!
Coupled with our excitement about having Rosalina on the board is our
regret at having to say farewell to Sierra Lauder. Sierra’s long commitment to
the organization began in 2007. She served as board chair for the last three of
those years and offered not only her creative ideas and clear sense of vision,
but also her dynamic energy and great sense of humor. Thank you, Sierra.
We’ll miss you and wish you all the best in your new pursuits!
CAP is looking for additional volunteer board members. All it takes is a
desire to promote the arts and art education in our community and the willingness to give some time to the cause. If you have an interest or particular skills
to offer, please contact us. We’re a fun group!
New Executive Director Takes the Reigns January 1
It is with great joy and enthusiasm that Community Arts Project announces
its new Executive Director, Dawn Beyer! On January 1, 2015, Dawn will take over
the position from Kim Cavatorta who has served as the ED for 20 years. While
retiring from her service to CAP in this capacity, Kim looks forward to continuing to
serve as an Art Literacy Program instructor and will present Slug Soup in 2015 (see
Kim’s comments below).
Dawn makes her home in Pacific City where she has created quite a name
for herself as the P.C. Farmers Market Founder and Manager and the Community Garden Coordinator. Her many
skills include administration, non-profit development and fundraising, social networking, volunteer coordination,
and ability to use a variety of computer programs. Dawn has served in the Peace Corps and speaks Spanish, is a
talented gardener and yoga instructor. She comes highly recommended as a person of integrity, dependability,
and creativity, who is energetic and easy to work with. Wow! The CAP board and staff look forward to getting
to know her better and helping her as she transitions into this new responsibility. Welcome aboard, Dawn!
New Beginnings
Briefly … from Kim Cavatorta
It is not without a little sadness that I leave my position as CAP’s Executive Director, but it is mostly with a
sense of gratitude and elation. I am so grateful for all the years of learning and growing, my teachers and guides
ranging from Kindergarten Art Lit students to our many gracious volunteers to CAP’s long list of talented board
members. These, along with a loving group of family and friends, have shared the journey with me during both
the “I can’t get this done on time!” and the “We did it!” moments. And what would I have done without all the
generous contributions from our loyal community? It has been remarkable. Thank you, All.
It will be a delight to continue on as an Art Lit instructor - it’s my love, after all. It will be delightful, too,
to sit down and read a book, start garden seeds in February, write some letters, unpack my loom, and hit the
road with Mark and our kayaks. I am so excited about having time to do things that have been patiently waiting.
One of the best parts of leaving the ED position is knowing that CAP will be in good hands with Dawn
Beyer. She’s terrific and I hope you will all support her in the same way you have me. One couldn’t ask for more.

Your Heart’s Desire Gets a Snow Day!
Thanks to an unexpected turn in the weather, what was
planned as a celebration of Valentine’s Day turned into an Ides of
March party with hearts! The weekend of February 8, as you no
doubt remember, 7-10 inches of snow fell in the South County area.
Knowing there was no way anyone could make it safely to the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City, CAP rescheduled its annual
Your Heart’s Desire fundraiser for Saturday, March 15.
Spirits were not deterred, however, as more than 150 shared
in the celebration on the new date. During the afternoon, gallery
guests were treated with demonstrations by artists Denise Clausen,
Nicola Harrison, and Mark Cavatorta. The evening party was enlivened again by the musical talents of Newport jazz group Past Forward. Other highlights included a beautiful display of art donated by
artists in the community, a selection of delectable appetizers and libations, a rousing raffle awards ceremony (!), dancing, and general
merry-making … all in support of CAP’s Art Literacy Program. While
we had to postpone the festivities for a few weeks, it was a successful
event and well worth waiting for.
There are so many individuals, businesses, and organizations
who helped in generous ways. Donors, volunteers, artists, musicians,
silent auction and raffle contributors, food and beverage donors - too
many to list here - all who have CAP’s appreciation and gratitude.
Very special thanks from CAP go to those who were major
sponsors of the event: Cape Kiwanda RV Resort, Inc., Pelican Pub and
Brewery, Seufert Winery, Twist Wine Company, Tillamook HeadlightHerald, KTIL Family of Radio Stations, Pacific City Sun, Rosenberg
Builders Supply, American Easel, LLC, Kiawanda Community Center,
Shorepine Vacation Rentals, Sportsman’s Pub-n-Grub, Tillamook Vision Center, TLC Federal Credit Union, Village Merchants, Fred Meyer
Tillamook, and Tillamook County Creamery Association.
Mark your calendars for next year’s Your Heart’s Desire … Saturday, February 14, 2015!
