COMMUNITY BICYCLE CENTER
ANNUAL REPORT 2013
PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH TO GROW
Community Bicycle Center | page 2
Wow, what a challenge to briefly describe the wonderful 2013 stories resulting from
our youth development efforts, support from over 115 volunteers, generosity from donors
and grantors, new partnerships and collaborations, and new program initiatives focused
on kids learning life skills. At last, through the help of the UNE REACH program we were able
to develop an outcomes measurement tool which showed that we are positively impacting the life skills and healthy lifestyle development of the kids we serve.
The CBC truly embraces its tagline, "Providing Opportunities for Youth to Grow," as
we invite kids into experiences that ignite their sparks. One of the highlights for me was
watching the support from family, CBC staff, and volunteers as Cameron Roy interacted
with guests during his first bike part art retrospective. Another moment was when Alexis
Gendron was honored by the publication of her mountain biking poem in the national Dirt
Rag magazine. The summer cycling season had many moments of pure joy as we supported seven youth who earned CBC tandem bike captain certificates which enabled
more kids to experience our local community through cycling adventures.
On the programming front our welding and fabrication program took root through
the facility support of the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology. We continued to focus
on retaining kids longer during their pre-adult lifespans through two adventure camps in
partnership with the University of Maine 4H and Seabrook Youth Services. Although we
prefer to share specific stories about the growth in specific kids, the CBC had a banner year
with 351 sessions over 3,351 participant days working with kids through repairing bikes,
cycling adventures, welding skill building, and community service projects.
As far as sustainability, the CBC initiated an auxiliary business, the Portland Gear Hub
(PGH), in partnership with Camp Ketcha. The PGH opened as a bike and outdoor gear
thrift and rental store. Another partnership developed with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine through our inaugural bicycling benefit ride. Since the inception of the CBC we
have been searching for a more effective home base to facilitate our work with kids. The
year ended with the CBC being in a position to secure a new home in 2014 to enhance our
current programs and grow into several new initiatives.
Thank you for the support of our staff, donors, volunteers, and community in providing opportunities for the CBC and the youth we serve to grow and thrive. Take care and
please stop by the CBC to see how we are putting our strategic plan into action to help kids
be successful in relationships, school and work, and community life.
Take Care,
Andy Greif
PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH TO GROW
Annual Report 2013
NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
2013: BY THE NUMBERS
The CBC is a year-round youth development program and home -base for hundreds of kids in Biddeford
and surrounding communities. We’re a community-based program that uses bicycle-related activities as
the tool for helping youth and young adults, especially those who are struggling in other areas of their
lives, achieve future success through asset-building activities, mentorship, and life skills development.
341 kids participated in CBC programs during 3,351participant days,
earning 138 bikes and receiving 127 free helmets
1,867 youth and families were impacted by CBC outreach efforts in addition to
raising over $16,098 for the ALA-NE through our Trek Across Maine team
73 youth pedaled 9,019 miles during our
tandem, road, and mountain biking trips
Youth logged 37 volunteer days (79 hours)
of service through Bike Doctor outreach
21 girls rode 1,005 miles cumulatively
during Girls’ Empowerment Group
15 youth ages nine to 18 years-old learned
welding & fabrication skills
10 youth graduated from Bike Monkeys
CBC was supported by 115 volunteers
in 2013

Earn-a-Bike: The CBC’s educational bike shop opened every weekday afternoon with
expanded hours on Saturday for children to learn life skills through repairing and maintaining bicycles. Three hundred and forty-one youth worked on their own bikes, repaired
and earned bikes, reconditioned bikes for community outreach projects, and maintained
our instructional bicycle fleet during 3,351 participant days.
During this staple program children earned 138 bikes in addition to repairing their
own bikes and completing numerous bike safety inspections. Youth learned life skills
including shared shop space etiquette, observational and problem solving skills, conflict
resolution skills, goal persistence, patience, personal learning styles, and the meaning of
service above self. Twenty-one youth earned their mandated community service hours
working in the CBC shop and assisting during bike rides. The CBC provided 127 free
bicycle helmets.
Bike Doctor Outreach: During 14 sessions, Bike Doctor volunteers worked on 76 bikes for
youth living in Biddeford neighborhoods. Older CBC teens logged 37 volunteer days and
79 hours of volunteer service. With support from Kennebunk Savings Bank the CBC was
able to bring in professional bike mechanic, William “Woodie” Worthley. Woodie was a
huge asset to the Bike Doctor program as he brought many years of professional experience and was able to share that experience with CBC staff and youth volunteers while
fixing bikes in local neighborhoods.
Bike Monkeys: Ten youth (six male, four female) completed our signature curriculumbased, bicycle repair training program, assisted by 12 dedicated volunteer mentors. The
CBC offered a co-ed program as well as a Girls Only program in 2013. A lead mechanic and
a graduated Bike Monkeys mechanic led each session. During each youth’s commitment,
they learned bicycle repair skills, shop maintenance and safety habits, and community
service concepts. Youth that participated during 2013 have already begun to give back to
the CBC through volunteering during open shop hours and our Bike Doctor program.
Bike Ride Adventures + Overnight Trips: During the spring, summer and fall, kids gathered at the CBC shop three times each week to learn safe cycling skills on group road,
mountain, and tandem bike rides. They explored Biddeford and surrounding communities with trips to places with fun destinations - swimming, ice cream, and mud. Children
learned how to shift gears, apply the Rules of the Road, and safe group cycling habits.
During 2013, 79 youth pedaled a combined 9,019 miles. Additionally, seven older CBC
youth earned their tandem (two-person bike) captains certificates which made rides
possible for children who were not ready to ride solo.
The CBC embarked on three overnight bicycling trips including a youth Trek Across
Maine team-building trip to Camp Ketcha in Scarborough and two service-learning trips
to the Kennebunk Conservation Land Trust (KCLT) in collaboration with the New
Hampshire-based Seacoast Youth Services (SYS). During the two-night, three-day KCLT
trips, 13 CBC youth and eight SYS participants completed volunteer trail and islandmaintenance projects while experiencing camping on Vaughn Island, rowing around Cape
Porpoise, and mountain biking in the Smith Preserve .

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

...program highlights continued from page 4
Youth Welding & Fabrication During 25 drop-in sessions in 2013, fifteen youth participated in CBC’s youth welding and fabrication program. Ten boys and four girls with ages
ranging from eight to 18 years old participated in the program along with the mother of
one nine year-old. Participants were introduced to MIG welding (metal inert gas) and
SMAW welding (shielded metal arc welding, known more informally as “stick” welding).
They learned basic fabrication concepts, proper joint preparation, and how to used allied
fabrication processes (torch cutting and bending, use of air tools including grinders,
cut-off wheels) while working on a personal project using recycled bike parts and tubing
from bikes destined for metal recycling. Participant projects included a toolbox, salvaged
“bike dog”, fishing pole holders, a steel Hello Kitty doll, custom bike mirror mounts,
licenses plates and signs.
Annual Report 2013
Girls Empowerment Group: During the summer and shoulder seasons, girls embarked
on weekly road or mountain bike rides ranging from five to 25 miles making stops at
Blandings Park Wildlife Sanctuary, local swimming holes, and beaches. Overall, in 2013, 21
girls rode 1,005 miles cumulatively.
Community Outreach Projects: With support from the Biddeford Police Department,
Biddeford School Department, and the Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition the CBC
organized a city wide Walk to School event for students at the Biddeford Primary, Intermediate, and Middle Schools. This year the John F. Kennedy Kindergarten Center also participated. Over 1,100 students participated in the event.
Also in 2013, the CBC participated in family fun nights at Biddeford Primary School,
a vehicle fair at the Sweetser School, Biddeford’s annual Bacon Street Festival, and the
Maine Bike Rally. We also presented to the students at the Kennebunk Consolidated
School and the BLAST afterschool program at Biddeford Intermediate School. The CBC
donated bikes to the Center for Cultural Exchange program for their foreign exchange
students, organized an Eastern Trail ride for Sacopee Valley High School students and staff,
and completed bike and helmet safety checks for the Kennebunkport Recreation Department.
