CLOTHING, CELEBRITIES AND CONSUMER TRENDS Maree Mossmer was in a green satin print by Cavalli. Caroline Nierenberg wore blue by Talbot Runhof. (Behind her is a pastiche of a painting by Magritte.) Jennifer Greenfield chose black with silver beading by Vionnet. BEAUTY ON DISPLAY ‘Artrageous’ night features works of art and fabulous fashion T ABOVE:. Chairwoman Kathryn Stephens wore black by Roberto Cavalli. She added a crystal and onyx pin. RIGHT: Shelley Whittaker wore moss green by Carolina Herrera. Michael Spengler photos he morning after the 2007 Jewel Ball, two guests — speaking at different times and in different places — judged it “the most beautiful ever.” They may have been right. The 61st Jewel Ball was called “Artrageous” and it was filled with clever paintings and sculptures created by the 50 women who are members of Las Patronas — pastiche tributes to Magritte, Mondrian, Warhol and the like. Tables on the tennis courts of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club were covered in black and centered with lofty explosions of white ostrich feathers. Kathryn Stephens, a tall redhead, chaired the Aug. 4 ball with the help of co-chairs Caroline Nierenberg (another redhead) and Lydia McNeil. Kathryn was regal in black by Roberto Cavalli. Some of the others in black were Terry Cooper, president of Las Patronas; Dianne Bashor, a major donor to the ball; Lise Wilson, Ann White, and Jennifer Greenfield, who wore a gown with the newly revived Paris label of Vionnet. Shelley Whittaker chose a moss green dress by Carolina Herrera; Caroline Nierenberg was in rich, deep blue by Talbot Runhof (Caroline will chair the Jewel Ball next year); and Maree Mossmer wore a slithery green satin print by Cavalli. Valerie Cooper was in robin’s egg blue by Marc Bouwer; Tanya Brandes wore silvery white by Versace; and Linda Swortwood was in a floral chiffon with a handkerchief hemline. It was by Ralph Lauren. And Thom Tullis wore a tuxedo shirt painted with dribbles of color — a salute to Jackson Pollock. SanDiegostyle S E E N O N T H E ST R E E T Looking classy, DELORES MCNEELY of Point Loma was spotted while enjoying an evening with friends at the Summer Pops. The 57-year-old sales executive for Union Bank of California took some time to chat about her wardrobe. Tell me about what you’re wearing tonight. I love the animal print. And I’m wearing matching earrings that I got from Costa Rica. I’m into earrings. And I love hats. Describe your style. Elegant and sophisticated. Where do you shop? Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus. Do you have any favorite designers? Armani. I have a black Armani suit and I just love it. I also like Missoni knits. What was your most recent purchase? This belt. I got it at Neiman’s for almost $300. It’s super-wide. I saw it on Diane Keaton in a movie recently and I loved it. What’s your next purchase? St. John knits. What’s your most luxurious item? An Armani dress from Neiman’s. It’s silver-shimmery. Every time I wear it, everybody says “wow.” I’m going to a wedding in Vegas and I plan to wear it then. So how do you dress for work? All business. Two-piece business suits. Do you have a lot of them? I absolutely cannot buy one more suit! I have at least 40 — I need to purge! What was the best $10 you’ve ever spent? I have a pair of jeans from Ross that were $9.99. What do you splurge on? Purses. I have two Louis Vuitton purses, one black and one red. Is there something you will never wear? Sweats — and before this year, I was not a jeans type of person, but I just went out and bought three new pairs! — PHOTO AND TEXT BY CRISSY PASCUAL ST Y L E F I L E JUDGING JENNIFER Jennifer Lopez had a fashion frenzy at three premières for her new movie, “El Cantante,” costarring husband Marc Anthony. She started in Puerto Rico with a sparkling Atelier Versace with sweeping train (below); chose a salmon chiffon Marchesa for New York City (fashion bloggers noted it showed — oops! — a bikini top tan line); and donned a flowing white Alberto Ferretti in Los Angeles. Which one is your favorite? Email us at instyle@uniontrib. com, and we’ll tell you the consensus next Sunday. — BURL STIFF Associated Press photos .
