HIP HOP AFRICAN STYLE
An upbeat workshop! If you have ever
wanted to learn that Hip Hop rhythm that sounds so
good on djembe & balafon... now is your chance!
This beat is easy
to learn and very
fun to play in jam
sessions. We will
learn new material
in this workshop,
including how to
play the djembe,
bass drums,
shakers & balafon.

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS
AFRICAN XYLOPHONE &
DRUM ENSEMBLE
KRIN (LOG DRUMS)
LEARN BALAFON - NEW rhythms to play on
played with sticks. They are dynamic and fun to play!
authentic balafon (West
African xylophones). These
ancient instruments are the
ancestors of the Western
concert marimba, and are
have a rich tonal quality.
 Sunday 1:30-3 pm - $29
Learn a complete piece for
xylophones & drum ensemble,
including an intro, basic
patterns, and breaks.

KALIMBA (THUMB PIANO)
DJEMBE & BASS DRUMS
A beautiful melodic percussion
instrument from East Africa!
Learn how to fit in the djembe patterns
with the three sizes of bass drums!
No experience required &
instruments are
provided. Learn a song
with interlocking pattern
that sound amazing
togther. Very soulful!
Friday 8-9:30 pm - $29
SUNDAY WORKSHOPS
Learn djembe and dunun (bass drums) fro traditional
Malinke rhythms played in West Africa. Option to learn
balafon (African xylophone) patterns as well as the
djembe and bass drums. All levels welcome. Develop
your rhythmic independence, timing and stick control
in this energizing workshop.

Krin are slit drums made of of hollowed logs,
Interlocking rhythmic patterns plus a soloist create
rich and beautifully melodic rhythms.
BURUNDI BEAT
From East Africa is
performed on large wooden
drums. This form of unified
playing from Burundi is very
powerful, yet easy to learn. You
will learn the basic beat and a
series of breaks, along with
stops and starts that go with the rhythm.
 Sunday 3-5 pm - $39
BALAFON BEATS IN 6/8
Get into a trance… This workshop will teach you
hynoptic 6/8 and 9/8 rhythms on balafon that loop in a
beautiful way. Also included are the basic drum beats
that fit with these balfon parts. Very relaxing to learn.
