ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
NEEDS ASSESSMENT
This 3-day meeting will provide the
comprehensive ophthalmologist with
information and skills related to the latest
developments in the subspecialties of
cataract surgery, glaucoma, retina, cornea/
external disease, pediatric ophthalmology,
neuro-ophthalmology and oculoplastics
surgery. There will be a particular focus on
cataract surgery: preoperative management,
intraoperative considerations, and
postoperative complications. Participants will
also participate in mini-symposia with grand
rounds-style complex case presentations.
Round table sessions will also be employed to
cover each area of ophthalmology.
Ophthalmologists must constantly
update their practice by incorporating
new evidence-based therapies, surgical
techniques and scientific insights. Results of
needs assessments indicate an educational
need for a succinct update on the latest
developments in ophthalmology from experts
in the field utilizing didactic instruction,
video presentations, panel discussions and
interactive roundtable sessions. This course is
designed to change physician performance in
all areas related to cataract surgery.
A follow up questionnaire will be distributed
to all participants to evaluate change in
patient care practice as a result of this
learning activity.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of the activity, participants
should be able to:
• Evaluate the preoperative management of
the ocular surface prior to cataract surgery
• Discuss management of complicated
intraocular lens calculations
• List current recommendations cataract
surgery and intraocular lens placement in
the pediatric population
• Identify corneal diseases that may impact
the outcome of cataract surgery
• List newer surgical advances for addressing
glaucoma at the time of cataract surgery
and understand what is the current
standard of care
• Discuss use of the femtosecond laser for
cataract surgery
