Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 ACURIL 2015 SURINAME, JUNE 7-11, 2015 Hotel Torarica & Casino Unity within Diversity La Unidad dentro de la Diversidad L’Unité dans la Diversité COLLABORATIVE CONTINUING EDUCATION: LEARN, ACT AND INSPIRE Professional and Personal Development Opportunities For Lifelong Learning in Libraries, Archives and Museums in the Caribbean PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME March 2015 Paramaribo, Suriname 1 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 ACURIL 2015 SURINAME Expresses its sincere gratitude to all Special Sponsors Anton de Kom University of Suriname The Official Event Carrier 2 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 TO ALL LIBRARIANS, ARCHIVISTS, MUSEOLOGISTS, EDUCATORS, AND OTHER INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS IN THE CARIBBEAN AND GLOBAL COMMUNITY Message from the President 2014-2015 Warm greetings to all information professionals and friends, I am very pleased and delighted to invite you to my beautiful country Suriname to participate in the 45th ACURIL Conference, to be held from Sunday June 7th until Thursday June 11th 2015, at the Hotel Torarica & Casino. The theme of the Conference is Collaborative Continuing Education: LEARN, ACT AND INSPIRE Professional and Personal Development Opportunities for Lifelong Learning in Libraries, Archives and Museums in the Caribbean. Nowadays it is of great importance to stay on top of developments, mainly due to the rapid changes of the information and communication technology field. The continuing education is, therefore, inevitable. Its importance lies not only in what we learn, but also in how, when and with whom we learn. Keeping track of new trends, following discussion lists and forums on our discipline, learning from evidence-based practices, sharing learning, is an unending path. The challenge is to continuously increase our knowledge, competences, and improve our performance. Continuing education is more than updating old skills and learning new ones. This life-long learning process, of learning new skills, is based on personal development, which includes improvement of self-awareness and self-knowledge, development of our talents, and enrichment of our spirituality. Without the development of oneself it is impossible to help develop others. Improving oneself and developing others go hand in hand with personal development and it is a field of practice and research. On that account, for a better professional performance, it's absolutely essential to practice personal development. The conference theme will give us the opportunity to get informed about the diverse aspects of continuing education. Aside from the professional part, the participation in the conference will allow you to make the best of exploring Suriname’s community, its environment, life, culture and folklore. Sharing knowledge at this Conference is an excellent opportunity to learn best practices from each other. We hope that you, and all of us, will enjoy every moment, to participate, share and take away valuable information about life-long learning skills and opportunities for us, as individuals, and to apply them in our information services, in an effort to contribute to enrich our Caribbean profession. Jane W.F. Smith, MA ACURIL President 2014-2015 Library Director University of Suriname [email protected] http://ub.uvs.edu/ 3 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 TO ALL LIBRARIANS, ARCHIVISTS, MUSEOLOGISTS, EDUCATORS, AND OTHER INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS IN THE CARIBBEAN AND THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS OF THE LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE 45th ACURIL ANNUAL CONFERENCE SURINAME Dear Colleagues and Friends, It is our pleasure to welcome you all to the 45th ACURIL Conference to be held in our beautiful country Suriname. A very special welcome go to the first time visitors and the first time conference attendees. May all of you be challenged, informed, and inspired. The theme of this year: Collaborative Continuing Education: Learn, Act and Inspire brings us to an interesting exploring expedition wherein we can discover the most professional and personal development opportunities for lifelong learning in libraries, archives and museums in the Caribbean region. And of course it will be a challenge to put each discovering into practice! This 45th conference will also pay homage to a few Surinamese icons whose life’s mission demonstrated their belief on several ways in their Switi Sranang Kondre: Mr. André Loor, who past away last year. Mr. Loor was the historian of Suriname and known from his great love of Suriname and the very interesting way to bring history alive. Mrs. Cynthia Macleod, whose mission is to expose the history of Suriname through her magnificent novels, the boat trips with the Sweet Merodia over the Suriname and Commewijne river during which she brings the history of the plantations alive and the unforgettable sightseeing tours she gives in Paramaribo. Mrs. Mavis Noordwijk whose life’s mission is the preservation of Suriname’s culture through music and beautiful songs. Mrs. Noordwijk is also choir-master of Troiki, a choir with which she performs the most sparkling song especially of her Switi Sranang. Mr. Erwin de Vries, our most famous painter and sculptor whose works of art are not alone well-known in Suriname but also in the Netherlands, the Caribbean and beyond. Among others to be saluted are our former colleagues, the librarians: Mrs. Loes Polak-Ensberg. R.I.P., Librarian from the University of Suriname, the later Anton de Kom University of Suriname where she was the head of the United Nations depository library and later the head of the Medical Library. Mrs. Polak-Ensberg was a librarian pure sang, a very dedicated librarian. A special homage is rendered to Mrs. Carmen H. Ottevanger-Fazal Alkhan, one of the first librarians in Suriname and one of the first directors of the Bibliotheek Cultural Centre Suriname “CCS”. The library is the Public Library of Suriname and has a central function because it is the only public library we have. Until 1975 it was so that STICUSA, a Dutch organization managed 4 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 not only CCS but also the library courses by sending students to the Netherlands for a library study. After 1975 when Suriname became independent it was not possible to follow courses abroad. And it was Mrs. Carmen H, Ottevanger-Fazal Alikhan who knew how important education, especially for library personnel was. So she started with Library courses! In fact she is the founder of library education in Suriname! Last but not least is a homage also dedicated to Mrs. Ine Tsai Meu Chong, one of the first librarians in Suriname but also the first director of the University library. Ine Tsai Meu Chong, who managed the librarianship for more than thirty years, also was aware of the need of qualified library assistants. She started in the eighties the first library training school. Mrs. Tsai Meu Chong was the first librarian of Suriname who was council member of ACURIL (The ACURIL conference in Caracas). She also studied law at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname. Dear ACURIL Friends, may this 45th ACURIL conference not only create new partnerships and friendships, but also allow to acquire new knowledge and a better understanding of the successes and challenges that lies ahead as we prepare ourselves and users with our discoveries of the exploring expedition about opportunities for lifelong learning in libraries, archives and museums in the Caribbean. Stella M.L. Pollack-Leeflang Co-Conference Coordinator Olga Jannasch-Van ‘t Noordende Co-Conference Coordinator 5 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 ACURIL 2015 SURINAME Conference Dedication ACURIL 2015 SURINAME dedicates this event to: Andre Loor (historian) André Loor (February 17, 1931 – December 10, 2013 Paramaribo), the Surinamese historian, was a legend concerning the history of Suriname. He published many publications about the history of Suriname and other topics and he also contributed to various television programs. On 19 September 2013 he presented the book "André Loor tells ...1850-1950 ', his last work, which was enthusiastically received. Cynthia McLeod (author) Cynthia Mc Leod was born in 1936 in Paramaribo, Suriname. She debuted in 1995 with Hoe duur was de suiker? (How Much Was the Sugar?) - a novel that became an unexpected and unprecedented best seller in Suriname. This novel was the first of many. For years she brought the history of the plantations alive with the boat trips on her boat Sweet Merodia Mavis Noordwijk (musician) A very dedicated vocalist and conductor of several choirs in Suriname Erwin de Vries (painter) De Vries was born in Paramaribo and studied in the Netherlands, Royal Academy of Art, The Hague 1950-1953 and the National Academy of Art, Amsterdam 1957-1960. His work has since been displayed at the Stedelijk Museum and he made the Nationaal Monument Slavernijverleden in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. De Vries has also exhibited a great deal in Jamaica; there he became acquainted with the work of Barrington Watson, whose erotically charged paintings match his own in tone. 6 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 Loes Polak-Ensberg (librarian) After returning from the Netherlands where she studied librarianship, Loes Polak-Ensberg was responsible for the United Nations Library, part of the Library University of Suriname. She also managed the Medical Library of the University of Suriname. Carmen Ottevanger-Fazal Alikhan (librarian) After the independence of Suriname in 1975, Carmen Ottevanger-Fazal Alikhan was motivated to start a library training for library assistants in Suriname. As the director of the public library CCS, she managed many library training until 1990. Ine Tsai-Meu-Chong (librarian) The first librarian who represented Suriname in the ACURIL Executive Council (Caracas), studied law at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname. Ine Tsai Meu Chong was the first director of the University library and managed librarianship for more than thirty years. Worth mentioning is her contribution to the introduction of ICT in libraries in Suriname; promotion of the library software CDS-ISIS, CD-ROMs, cybertheek and the first step towards the use of the Internet on the university. She also was aware of the need of qualified library assistants. She started in the eighties the first library training school for library managers. 7 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 ACURIL 2015 SURINAME, JUNE 7-11, 2015 Hotel Torarica & Casino COLLABORATIVE CONTINUING EDUCATION: LEARN, ACT AND INSPIRE Professional and Personal Development Opportunities For Lifelong Learning in Libraries, Archives and Museums in the Caribbean PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME INFORMATION The explosion in information and technology in the 21st Century challenges us to continually renew our skills and expand our knowledge. For everybody, the continuous acquisition of knowledge is the key to greater satisfaction and productivity in life. For librarians, archivists and museums personnel especially, continuous learning means renewal of the skills and expertise needed to assist all types of clientele in libraries, archives and museums in the new information and knowledge society. As a professional in the information field one needs to develop oneself personally continuously. If skills are enhanced and one feels self-contented, the traits will radiate in all kinds of situations. Our attitudes and beliefs towards work will improve; and one will be a better colleague by sharing our knowledge with all our co-workers. Description of Logo We have chosen the Central Suriname Nature Reserve as a major part of our logo. Our natural reserve is of exceptional global value. It is on the UNESCO's World Heritage list since 2000. The Central Suriname Nature Reserve comprises 1.6 million of primary tropical forest in west-central Suriname. Its mountain and lowland forests are rich in biodiversity with more than 5,000 vascular plant species collected to date. In the Nature Reserve we find the kolibrie or hummingbird, the smallest bird in the world and is common in South America. It flies very fast and can even fly while hovering. We have highlighted the kolibrie, particularly for its spiritual meaning. The hummingbird encompasses independence, optimism, joyful life, concentration, overview, truth and achieving the impossible. 8 Preliminary Programme ACURIL 2015 Included are the paloeloe and faja lobi, the national flowers of Suriname. The paloeloe ('heliconia') is one of the beautiful flowers from the rich flora of Suriname. It is found in the Suriname forest with its lush vegetation and fiery flowers. The Faja Lobi (Ixora coccinea), also called ‘jungle flame’, means ‘fiery love '. Some people believe that the flower has that effect on people. Finally, the open book represents the development of people of all ages. Information institutes provide different types of documents and are centers for lifelong learning communities. Despite advances in information technology, books will not disappear. They will always be used clients for study, recreation, or skill development. Objective of the Conference The ACURIL Conference 2015 seeks to bring together information professionals from the Caribbean and other parts of the world to elaborate, discuss and learn more about personal and professional development opportunities within the scope of continuing education. It is expected that the exposure to the acquisition of updated knowledge, evidence-based practice examples and experiences regarding the enrichment of personal skills will lead to improvement of professionalism. Nowadays, where most information is produced and shared electronically, the conference will be paperless; laptops, tablets etc. will be needed during the conference. The participants will be encouraged, by the presentations and workshops at the conference, to start thinking seriously how to apply the new knowledge acquired as proactive leaders, managers or staff members in their respective organizations. Furthermore, it is hoped that an awareness will be triggered to keep up sharing experiences with colleagues, continue to be upto-date by studying, stay up-to-date on new developments attending conferences and seminars, for his or her benefit and to contribute to the profession.
