The Gazette of the
MARCH
President’s Message
Dear Members:
First, what does the Guild mean to me? Many things that are important; too many to itemize in a brief
note, but this includes ongoing learning, fellowship with like-minded comrades, and the satisfaction of a life-long
passion of creativity.
As a case in point, we just had an interesting lecture by Marcia Weiss at our February meeting, following a
whole day workshop in IKAT techniques. I had been collecting books about IKAT for years, and it seemed so
complicated that I hadn’t tried on my own. But Marcia made me see that we’re capable of doing it, and I am! At
the same time, I felt a kinship with my fellow learners. Workshops are wonderful for bonding and there are other
groups in spinning (which is popular and growing), and the rigid heddle loom (which is also experiencing greater
participation in classes) that I and you might consider. Please take note that a study group can be started for any
interest that’s not already met. Such a group challenges your comfort level and inspires you to grow as an artist,
The group support is priceless. Get involved!.
Second, we are starting to plan for next year at the guild. If you are interested in working on the board, and
guiding the priorities of the guild, please contact Kay Finney (215-438-6109) or Nancy Shiffrin (610-649-6209), who
are overseeing nominations.
Third, we’re proud to report that the Philadelphia Cultural Fund has approved the guild for a grant of
funds in 2013, although the actual amount hasn’t been announced yet. Many thanks to Maryanne McDevitt for her
work in writing the successful grant application!
Fourth, You’ll see a change in the environment of the guild house, as we’ve taken down the overgrown
trees and shrub growth outside and much of the litter.
Fifth, Betty Harris graciously volunteered to work on bulletin displays in our meeting room after the exhibit ends. This will present the guild more professionally and beautifully. If you have ideas for Betty (215-4871697) or would like to help her please contact Betty.
Finally, let’s make our 2013 exhibit one of our best!

IKAT WORKSHOP
Notable Member Mentions…..
From Maryanne McDevitt
Betty McCarron
Hello all:
Will be teaching a card weaving workshop at Wheaton Arts in
Millville, New Jersey, on May 11th, which is a Saturday, from
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Here’s my photo of my interesting color
result during the ikat class. I was dyeing in
a pot which was supposed to be green. I
thought I saw glimpses of green during the
dye process, but obviously it is not. I had
been thinking about painting some of the
white spaces with another color, but now may use the weft to
add a different color interaction… I’ll keep you posted. Can’t
wait to see how it will end up!
For Information on her class, use your browser to go to
www.wheatonarts.org and look at the class & workshop list.
For those of you without internet access/computer, please see
screenshot at the right.
Thanks, Marcia, and all class members. It was a great class.
News From the Dye Study Group
(Gravers Lane Galler—continued from page 2)
The dye study group held their first meeting to discuss our objectives. These include the
following: use of the natural dye garden at the
Awbury Arboretum, raising money to support the
garden through the sale of naturally dyed yarns,
and preparation of a binder to show the output of
plants from the garden, together with the application of various mordents. Our study group
members are encouraged to investigate, on their
own, preparation of different natural dyes that
interest them. Any member who is interested in
dyeing is welcome to join the study group. Contact me via e-mail: moral.fiber@iname,com
Window display—the work on the side wall of the window display in the this photo is Georgianne’s.
We capped off our first meeting with dyeing yarn in a madder dye bath. Because a recent
snowstorm kept many people away from the first
meeting, we held a second madder dye day to
use up the extra dye.
With the arrival of spring we will have our
first flowers from the garden to harvest for our
natural dye exploration. We’re looking forward to
the hyacinth and daffodil bulbs that will be
blooming by the end of March or the beginning of
April. Late spring will also be a time to put in additional plants and seeds for our summer flowers.

Class size limited to 5 students maximum with their own knitting machines. Arrangements can be made to rent a machine for a fee for those
who want to learn, but do not own a machine.
Lesson 1: Review the features of a knitting machine, learn machine knitting terminology, and learn to

Suggested Text: The Complete Book of Drafting for Handweavers by Madelyn Van DerHoogt
Level 1: Improve your knowledge of Weaving Structures by learning how to draft and manipulate weave
designs. You will start with the basics by working on graph paper to learn about the different parts of a
weave draft and how to create a drawdown. You will draft a variety of weaves with the three primary
weave classifications; those based on plain weave such as basket and rib weaves, twills and satins, and then
move on to color drafting. With the aim of designing your own projects, you will learn to adapt weaving
patterns such as those found in the Davison Pattern Book, or on www. Handweaving.net. The teacher will
demonstrate weaving software on her laptop, and any student who has one can also bring it to class.
Level 2: In the second session of Drafting Weave Structures, we will cover Block drafting, also known as
Profile Drafting. We will learn to create Profile Drafts, which are overall design plans for a weave. From
there, we will create thread-by-thread drafts of many weave structures to fit into our profile drafts. Some
of the many weaves that we might discuss are Summer and Winter, Lace Weaves, Turned Twill and Damask. An understanding of profile drafting will expand your design ability and free you to create your own
original weavings. The teacher will demonstrate weaving software on her laptop, and any student who has
one can also bring it to class.
DYE AND RESIST WORKSHOP WITH SHANNAH WARWICK
May 5, 11, 19, and 26th
1:00 to 4:00 pm
Instructor: Shannah Warwick, [email protected]
Course Fee: $135 Members—$150 Non-Members
Material fee to Instructor: approximately $45 including fabric, all supplies, reusable stamp, stamp cutter
with tips.
Class Limit: 6 (possibly 8)
In this workshop, we will explore various dye and resist techniques including potato and corn dextrin.
Potato dextrin cracks as it resists resulting in a batik-like process. Corn dextrin is a resist that can be used
as an “ink” to stamp and resist. We will also carve our own reusable stamps. The creative process will be
explored and emphasis will be placed on fabric design and inspiration. This workshop is perfect for beginners and those who took my potato dextrin workshop. Please come to class with fabric inspiration images. Examples: textures, colors, patterns, or designs that interest you. Images can come from magazines, books, computer print out, photographs, etc. I will also have the option of making a “scarf board”
after a class for a material only fee (TBA) that can be reused for future workshops and working at home.

PGHW Outreach is Flowering
One of the hats I wear at PGHW is “Outreach Coordinator”. I’m definitely an extrovert,
and love to share my love of weaving and fiber arts with everyone. That’s why I volunteered to be
Outreach Coordinator for PGHW. This spring, I’ll be out and about as usual. My March outreach
demonstrations will include working with The Langhorne Carpet Company at the flower show exhibit. Along with Students from Philadelphia University, we will demonstrate the magic of weaving to show attendees.
Did you know that many other PGHW members have connections to the Flower Show?
Dottie Yacek-Matulis, who creates the lovely arrangements for us every year at our Exhibit, is a
frequent exhibitor and award winner. Kathy Selbst will also be taking part in the festivities on Saturday night with her gardening group.
I am planning to be at the Langhorne Carpet booth on the afternoons of Tuesday. March
5th, and Thursday, March 7th. I hope you will drop by, but even if you can’t make it during my
demonstration, do stop in to see the Langhorne Carpet Company’s booth at the flower show. The
feature “Made in America” handwoven Wilton carpets, and are definitely worth a visit. See you
there!
