Job advert for CLZ General Manager Background: Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) is a Zambian non-‐profit, non-‐governmental organisation committed to the conservation and sustainable use of the local wildlife and natural resources of the Lower Zambezi for the present and future generations of Zambia. CLZ intend to achieve this through: • wildlife protection – assisting Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) anti-‐poaching patrol deployments and training as well as supporting a local Community Resource Board Village Scout unit; • environmental education through outreach in schools and visits to our CLZ environmental education centre; and • supporting local community support projects, especially human wildlife conflict mitigation. Funding Context: CLZ benefits from the support of several of the Lower Zambezi Safari Operators whose annual contribution covers approximately 20% of the core operating costs of the organisation. In order to consolidate and expand CLZ’s existing programmes, the balance of the funding is generated by other donor grants (e.g. African Wildlife Foundation, Tusk Trust, USFWS) and a significant amount by individual donations and fundraising events held in Zambia and beyond throughout the year. There are a number of events such as the annual fundraiser in collaboration with the Elephant Charge 4x4 Competition and a number of smaller social events in the Lower Zambezi and elsewhere. CLZ is looking to recruit a full time General Manager who will be responsible for our existing support base and expanding our network further into potential new areas of support. In addition he/she will be supervising the environmental education and community support projects alongside the project managers for these activities. Job Description: Reporting to the CLZ CEO and having considerable interaction with the CLZ treasurer and the Base Camp Manager, the General Manager will be responsible for generating financial support to CLZ through Grants, Event Management and Donations and will take the lead on marketing CLZ to current and new supporters across a range of media and utilising a wide range of methods to reach as wide an audience as possible. As well as the fundraising role, the CLZ General Manager will oversee the Community Support Program on an advisory and support basis working closely with the individual project managers for these activities, consolidating current projects and strategizing to improve the effectiveness of these vital projects for the future. The CLZ General Manager will be based at CLZ Base Camp on the border of the Lower Zambezi National Park and the Zambezi River. Base Camp has well-‐established infrastructure in the bush including office, dining area, visitor accommodation, workshop, housing and an environmental education centre. Working with a management team and 15 Zambian staff including project managers it is a rare opportunity to be involved in grassroots conservation and community projects in Zambia. The role will include but not be limited to the following tasks: 1. Pro-‐active Marketing & Fundraising: -‐ a. Pro-‐actively seek/investigate potential donor organisations (large and small) who may be approached for project grants. b. Be fully conversant with all CLZ projects in order to prepare grant applications to final draft stage – for submission to CEO. c. Manage relationships with current and future donors, providing timely narrative and financial reports and claims if applicable. d. Manage CLZ membership network, including LZ safari operators . Actively seek new membership both within the LZ and elsewhere. e. Develop, organise and co-‐ordinate events to support local fundraising streams. Manage and assist with annual fundraiser and other major events. Other events as discussed and agreed with CLZ CEO. www.conservationlowerzambezi.org 2. Raising awareness – through public presence, advertising and networking a. Liaise with CEO & Project Managers to develop and design marketing materials for use in promotion of projects, events and activities. b. Manage and develop with Base Camp Manager all existing CLZ social media (website, Facebook, twitter etc.) c. In conjunction with the CEO, Project Mangers and Base Camp Manager develop and circulate monthly newsletters. d. Alongside Base Camp Manager, manage and coordinate interactions with local and international media. 3. Financial Management: a. Hold responsibility for accounts management ; produce monthly cashbooks, manage petty cash and reconciliations along with Base Camp Manager; b. Produce annual budgets for CLZ Base Camp, EEP and Community Projects with CEO and Project Managers; c. Write and manage monthly payroll for all CLZ staff and Village Scouts 4. Community Support Project – Mentor Role: a. Act as a mentor/supervisor and manager for the HWC Coordinator to ensure monthly activities are in place using monthly reports and work programs submitted by the HWC Coordinator; b. Assist with strategic planning for new community support projects including income generating activities for local women’s groups and new methods of HWC mitigation; c. Continue to capacity build within the CSP and HWC Coordinator, encouraging the project manager to take on more of these roles and responsibilities (including financial management and reporting to CEO) in the future. 5. Environmental Education Project – Mentor Role a. Oversee the management of the EE Project by the Base Camp Manager to ensure that reports are being sent in a timely manner and of acceptable quality; b. Assist with planning of EE activities; c. Provide financial management of the project 6. Governance –Reporting to CEO a. Prepare monthly report for financial management, fundraising and PR, EEP and CSP (with assistance of project managers) for submission to CEO; b. Organise quarterly board meetings and Annual General Meeting; c. Compile relevant sections of Annual Report (EEP, CSP, Base Camp) 7. Safari Guide Training Administration a. Work with the Lower Zambezi Safari Guides Examination Committee and the CEO to organize and manage the SGT training course and examination on an annual basis b. Produce budgets and accounts for the SGT project. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will have: • • • • • • • • Minimum of bachelors degree in environment, conservation, social science or related field A demonstrable track record in NGO fundraising (including Grant Writing), communications and PR; Proficiency in public presentations and donor relations; Experience and awareness of conservation, rural development and living and working in developing countries; Experience and awareness of rural environmental education and community-‐based natural resource management in Zambia; Ability to live in remote camp environment; Basic experience of financial management and reporting The candidate must be able to demonstrate: o strong organizational skills o a proactive approach to problem solving o strong proficiency in written and spoken English o leadership skills and characteristics o the ability to be function effectively as part of a small team 2 | P a g e o the ability to work without full time supervision Location The CLZ General Manager will be based at CLZ Base Camp on the border of the Lower Zambezi National Park and the Zambezi River.
