WHAT WE DO -When students are dismissed from school, they are escorted to Wingspan’s central meeting area. -Students are provided with a snack and a variety of activities from dismissal - 3:30. -Enrichment classes run for 90 minutes from 3:30 - 5:00. -Pick-up runs from 5:00 - 6:00. Students are encouraged to work on homework, read independently, play outside, solve puzzles, draw pictures or engage in other activities. Fees are non-refundable and cover materials, extra insurance & other program expenses. Refunds should be requested in writing, and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. In this class, students will learn drumming techniques, how to create different tones and rhythms, and participate in percussion jam sessions. Percussion is a great music foundations class for beginners. Join us for a rockin’ good time! Lego Creations – Tuesday Legos just got even more fun! In this class, students experience the excitement of Legos and learning! This class will introduce teamwork, observation, creative thinking and problem-solving skills all while using creativity and imagination to build the most amazing creations! $15 Materials fee Creature Creations – Wednesday Create your own puppets and bring them to life! In this hands-on class, you will learn the basics of puppet making and creature creation. There will be lots of brainstorming and building puppets from foam, cardboard, lollipops, Styrofoam balls – even fruits and vegetables! Best of all, you get to take your creatures home. After we have created our various creatures, we will perform with our puppets by exploring stories from various children’s books. Storytime Theatre – Thursday In this unique class, students explore the elements of stories, such as character, setting, plot, and conflict through dramatic activities and visual arts. Students also develop the skills and techniques of storytelling through individual and ensemble creative play. To showcase what they have learned, students work together to create their own stories, respond to timeless classics, and apply their experiences to perform an original theatre piece. Movin’ & Groovin’ – Friday This high-energy class combines rhythm and dance to get everyone movin’ to the beat! We will explore different dance and movement styles through a wide-rage of fun music, imaginative games, and exercises. In this class you will certainly have fun finding new ways to move to the groove! BSI & TAOTS FALL 2013 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS ! & @BSI TS TAO club wingspan K - 1st Grade Classes Jr. Asphalt Jungle – Monday This energetic class will have tons of fun in the schoolyard. Get ready for four square, stickball, chalk games, and many more as we explore the most popular games on the playground! And not just recent games – we’ll explore games from days past and have a “ball” on our own playground! The Art of Puppetry – Tuesday Create your own puppets and bring them to life! The class will start off with students watching several puppet shows to get a sense of joy that goes into play-acting. This club will give students a chance to build puppets from lollipops, Styrofoam balls, vegetables and fruit, and pop-up paper. Best of all, you get to take your puppets home! Prepare yourself for a life-size puppet show at the end of the semester. Yogamotion – Wednesday Breathe Deep. Meditate. Stretch. Move! Through the ancient art of yoga, students will gain flexibility and have the freedom to dance and explore creative movement. They will have the ability to find balance and focus that will help them throughout the school year. Super Soccer Stars– Thursday Come and learn about the world’s most popular sport in this fun and active class. Super Soccer Stars will teach you basic skills, warm-ups and tips on how to keep fit. So sign up, build your self-confidence and become part of the Super Soccer Stars team! $25 Insurance Fee Actor’s Workshop – Friday Do you love to be on stage? Do you want to practice being a star? In the Actor’s Studio, students will focus on monologue development. We will work on monologue preparation, including memorization. The second half of the class, students will be paired up and work on scenes together. We will learn the foundation of theatre techniques that will help them for years to come! We will practice speaking to an audience, focus on individual skills and participate in scene work all while have a great time! BSI & TAOTS FALL 2013 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS ! & @BSI TS TAO club wingspan 1st – 2nd Grade Classes Super Hero Theatre – Monday Get your capes ready and imaginations in gear – no phone booth required! This class focuses on finding your inner superhero. Using imagination and creative play, students will develop characters that do great things and help people! At the end of the semester, students will share their superhero stories in an original performance. Jr. Theatrix – Tuesday Working together as an ensemble, we will create our own play or musical based on a book, picture, or poem. Students will experience different elements of theatre making through dramatic activities and creative play. By working in character, and within a set of imaginary circumstances, students will develop theatrical improvisation skills, as they story-building their final production for all to see! Art of Cooking – Wednesday In this class, students will not only learn what fruits and vegetables are in season, but how to prepare them in fun and creative ways! When the club is over, we will have our own cookbook and even a tasting for grown-ups. So join us for a cooking class—the healthier the better! $15 Materials fee Performing Poetry – Thursday Have you ever wondered what makes poetry just pop off the page? How does a person create a powerful personal performance? In this class, we’ll investigate the styles of poetry performance, and how to establish your own voice and make it heard. From Shakespeare to modern slam poets, students will get to perform works by familiar and unfamiliar wordsmiths - and maybe even some of their own! Chess – Friday Work towards mastering the art of out-smarting your foe with clever opening principles and a tough middle game. Through chess, you’ll learn concentration, logical thought, planning, pattern recognition, self-discipline, and taking responsibility for your own mistakes. Most of all, chess will allow you to feel incredibly empowered, as you learn to maneuver through various minefields. $25 Materials fee BSI & TAOTS FALL 2013 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS & @BSI TS TAO ! club wingspan 1st – 3rd Grade Classes Arts & Crafts Alive – Monday This class will focus on the individuality and creative thinking process of each child as images and three-dimensional forms emerge from stories, poetry and free association. Concepts will come to life as students develop skills to communicate their ideas. This is a great class in which to explore a variety of artistic mediums, and is sure to help each young artist develop his or her skills. Super Soccer Stars – Tuesday Come and learn about the world’s most popular sport in this fun and active class. Super Soccer Stars will teach you basic skills, warm-ups and tips on how to keep fit. So sign up, build your self-confidence and become part of the Super Soccer Stars team! $25 Insurance Fee Fashion Design – Wednesday Calling all Project Runway fans! This class is a basic sewing and do-it-yourself fashion design class. We will start with drawing designs creatively and specifically. We will then learn basic stitches and ways to sew without using a machine and how to cut a basic pattern. Culminating projects will include revamping old t-shirts and jazzing up accessories such as belts, shoe laces, and headbands. $15 Materials fee Afro-Caribbean Drumming – Thursday Express yourself, feel the beat and let the rhythm take you to new discoveries as you play the congas, bongós, timbales and maracas, just to name a few! You will be introduced to different Afro-Caribbean styles of music from Salsa to Merengue to Cha Cha Cha and its different applications and influence in popular music from Funk and Rap to Hip Hop. You will also learn drumming techniques, how to create different tones, and a wide range of rhythms. The semester will end with a final music performance featuring the student ensemble in a Latin percussion jam! 3D Art (Grades 1-4) – Friday Let’s build! This club is a 3-D visual arts class with an emphasis on creativity, fun and invention! You will learn sculpture - clay, foam, paper, wire; carving - linoleum, potatoes, soap; 3D printing; mobile and collage. Art lessons will be based on technique, craft media and art history. Whatever you make will be a unique expression of your creativity. BSI & TAOTS FALL 2013 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS ! & @BSI TS TAO club wingspan 2nd – 4th Grade Classes Art of Science – Monday In The Art of Science we explore science creatively, using our right brain and all of our senses. We'll taste the periodic table, discover the science of music and explore the solar system, space and even dinosaurs through dance, theatre games and puppetry. We will paint, color and craft experiments that help us understand friction, force, chemical reactions and so much more! We'll stay clued into science in the news and of course we'll launch an air rocket or two. This class is perfect for the creative and the curious. Robotics with Brooklyn Robot Foundry – Tuesday Does your child like robots? Do they love building and taking things apart? Are they curious about how things work? Then this is the perfect program for them! We integrate hands-on building with engineering demonstrations to take the mystery out of how things work. We teach the fundamentals of engineering through tons of really fun robotic activities. Most weeks, students will take home a custom built robot! $50 Materials fee Backyard Sports – Wednesday A high-energy class filled with relays, ball games, and circle activities. We will learn new and exciting games to involve everyone in a full kinetic experience. Be prepared to improvise and develop your own games on the spot! Jewelry Making – Thursday Throughout this class students will make beautiful jewelry to wear! Some projects will include coiled wire rings, beading, clay bead making, stone wrapping, and brass hammering. Whatever you make, you wear! $15 Materials fee 3D Art (Grades 1-4) – Friday Let’s build! This club is a 3D visual arts class with an emphasis on creativity, fun and invention! Each class will end with a healthy, local, and 100% vegetarian snack, made by the students! They will even take a trip to a Green Market to speak with farmers and pick out their own produce. By the end of the semester, they will have a book of recipes, a beautiful handmade calendar of seasonal treats, and happy tummies! Creative, nutritious, and delicious! $15 Materials Fee Karate (Grades K-5) – Wednesday Karate is an exciting way for young students to learn not only the techniques of martial arts, but to discover honor and tradition. Students will be encouraged to have fun while exercising discipline and respect of self and others. This Karate class will bring a wonderful balance of games and hard work. $25 Insurance fee *If you are a new student, a $30 uniform fee may also apply.* Chess – Thursday Work towards mastering the art of out-smarting your foe with clever opening principles and a tough middle game. By the end of the class, the students will be on their way to leading the newest rock or country band! BSI & TAOTS FALL 2013 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS ! & @BSI TS TAO club wingspan 4th – 5th Grade Classes Knitting – Monday Get ready to “cast on” and start your knitting adventure! In your introduction to this craft, you will learn how to crochet, knit with your fingers, “garter” and “purl” stitch with needles and be on your way to creating beautiful accessories! Advanced knitters will learn to make even more intricate patterns. $15 Materials fee Modern Masters – Tuesday This class is for the artist and the art historian alike! In this class, students will learn and discuss different art genres and periods, such as impressionism, fauvism, pointillism, art nouveau, art deco, abstract art, and pop art. We will then create their own 2-D and 3-D artworks inspired by these ideas. Shakespeare Theatre – Wednesday The stories of Shakespeare have excited and moved us for centuries. Now you can dive into his world of magic, dreams, and fantastic creatures! This class will increase students’ understanding of theatre through creative games and ensemble building activities. Learn how fun and exciting Shakespeare can be, and it will create a lasting impression that will pay off during literature classes down the line! Advanced Sports – Thursday Do you want to get serious about Sports? In this class, we will spend some time going in- depth with some major sports. These may include: Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Lacrosse, Tennis and Volleyball. This more advanced section of Athletics will focus on conditioning, competitive team sports and skill enhancement in a supportive environment. Students will have a blast as they develop their skills and confidence! Fencing – Friday Fencing is like chess for your body. Strategize and try to best your opponent, involve your mind and improve your agility. This class will promote physical fitness, academic success and emotional well-being. This program will instill the importance of discipline and determination in all students. $50 Uniform/gear rental fee
