AROUND THE SCHOOL…
The AIS visited yesterday for the second stage of our school audit
process, the VET Compliance Audit. They were very impressed with
our existing and proposed VET facilities, and the quality and
direction of our VET programs and assessment strategies.
Congratulations to the High School team.
Excitement has been building this week as preparations for Winter
Festival reach a crescendo. Weaving, finger-knitting, candledipping, felting, stitching, carving and hammering – winter lanterns
come into being. Threads of rainbow wool, hands and knitting
needles flash - scarves and beanies unfold. Voices rise in verse and
rhythm - speech and song resonate.
!
In times long ago, people were very connected to the natural world.
Celebrations such as the Winter Festival enable us to reconnect with
the rhythms of nature, as they did. We join together to experience
the longest night of the year and celebrate the turning point when
the sun’s forces strengthen, bringing light and growth. The lanterns
that the students make symbolise their own inner light.
Hopefully the children will be eager to share their stories of their
Winter Festival Celebration around the dinner table on Friday night.
There are some school based events occurring during the holiday
period:
•
Duncan, experienced Steiner teacher (and craftsman!) who
has been teaching with us recently, will be running some
creative arts workshops for students and friends (some details
•

follow);
Clarissa will be onsite in the second week of holidays,
continuing her program to refresh some of our Primary
•
spaces during the school break;
Staff will attend two seminar days, 17th & 18th July;
•
Stuart’s ‘Celebrating Lorien Novalis’ talk for the whole school
community is on Friday night, 18th July at 7pm.
The school office is open the first and third week of holidays.
If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch.

We hope all of our school families enjoy a restful Winter holiday.

A Preliminary Meeting w ith the University Life…
Plus - A Little Surprise!
Paulina wants to be a ballerina, while Jonathan wishes to work with fast race cars like Daddy.
However, they are not the same as Lena- who wants to help people at the hospital, just like her
mummy does every night when she goes to work in her green garb. Brenton sees himself being just
like his mum and dad, who both work for a big business in the city and dress in fancy clothes,
carrying polished briefcases when they go. Fiona wants to be an interpreter, Molina a hip-hop
dancer, Zachary a rock singer, Charlie a security guard… The only question now is: will these dreams
remain the same when they grow up? Maybe, or perhaps they will choose another path, or even not
know where they want to go. Want them to decide for themselves, or be assisted in making the
decision? Then the Careers Expo in Homebush, designed specifically for High School students, is the
place for them.
On the 20th of June, Classes 11 and 12 of Lorien Novalis were invited to take part in a unique event;
hosted by none other than the Homebush Olympic Park Event Hall, and were given the opportunity
to preview various universities and tertiary colleges that exist around Sydney. This assists in guiding
those who may be a little unsure of the future, in addition to providing extra information to those
who know exactly what path they wish to pursue after their schooling life!
Upon entering the hall, one is first struck by the sheer magnitude of the building and the great mass
of open stalls that are stationed throughout the construction, the smell of small café bagels and
coffee wafting in through the open gateway… Entering the busy space, students from schools all
around Sydney can be seen filtering in and out of the promotional stalls, a joyful chatter filling the
open air. Gathering one’s courage to walk up to one of these stalls is the first big step, but then it’s
all a breeze from there. The individuals that we spoke to who represented each university or college
were instantly responsive, noticing our interest and helping us in any way that they could to find out
more about the range of degrees and other facilities of connection that their university offered.
From there, what more can I say other than: pamphlets, leaflets, application forms, small booklets,
flyers, business cards, pamphlets, pamphlets and more pamphlets!? The intrigued student can gain
great knowledge about the universities, colleges and campuses they have interest in attending
during this wonderful day. Also, being allowed a certain measure of independence to find their way
among the bustling stalls is exhilarating, as well as a marvellous amount of fun.
Meeting other students around similar ages is an
additionally positive feature of the day, often
occurring while breaking to grab a quick croissant or
steaming drinks at in the ‘food court’ areas. Of
course, one could not forget to mention the
complimentary gifts that Uni representatives love to
distribute when interest is shown in their school;
coming in the forms of lollies, logo emblazoned bags
and cups, button pins, stationery items, small sports
balls and many more!
!
!
Then it was back to the bus, at the end of a long and exciting day; with the music turned up, our
seats tipped slightly backward, making our way ‘home’ to the school of Lorien Novalis, once again. I
have a feeling though that we will all remember this great experience as one of our favourite Year 12
memories, having a clearer idea of where we wish to go in the future.
On a personal level, I believed the overall experience to be truly unique, immensely informative and
overall- very delightful! I learned so much about universities that I didn’t even know existed, and
going into the expo with a relatively set plan (for university) I came out considering a number of
different ‘plans’. In addition to this, being around other schools and other young people who had
high aspirations for their future (as I do) was a wonderful experience.
The Careers Expo was not the only point of interest on this particular excursion, due to the fact that
another expo, the “Mind, Body Health Expo”, was occurring at the same time. We were permitted to
attend that as well! From the natural therapies, to the healthy and delicious food, to healing crystals,
to amazing craft-- it was an almost magical outing that I believe we all had a wonderful time
attending!

the second week of the holiday break.
Students of Lorien Novalis are welcome
to bring other family and friends.
A detailed timetable w ill be emailed to
all parents early next w eek, inviting
registration.
A packed morning tea, lunch and drink
will be needed, as per a normal school
day.
All activities will be fully supervised by
Duncan Harwood, who has taught four
Primary school cycles, and has recently
returned to Lorien Novalis.
We will also be looking at the workshops

VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION NEEDED
We are seeking accommodation within the
school community for one of our 2014-15
volunteers from Germany.
Alexandra has attended a Waldorf school near
Stuttgart, and will be 19 years old when she
joins us.
We would like to find a family that can offer
Alexandra room and board, within easy travel
reach of school. Ideally for a 12 month period,
otherwise 6 months would be a suitable option.
You will be reimbursed $150 per week to host
Alexandra’s stay.
We are very fortunate to have had many
wonderful young people join us over the last
years, helping Phil with our school grounds and
maintenance, and assisting teachers with class
activities and trips. The time here provides
volunteers an opportunity to improve their
English, and to travel in Australia. We would
like to make Alexandra very welcome.
Please contact Stefan if you can help:

Thank you!
