Dear Club Member,
As we plan our gardens, polish our boats, store the snow throwers and sharpen our lawn mowers,
we once again look forward eagerly to the wonderful activities of summer at Lake Mohawk. Now is
the time your Club begins to plan its annual, much anticipated and enjoyed Fourth of July
fireworks display. This annual patriotic event, which has been held at Lake Mohawk since its
inception, has long enhanced the prestige of Lake Mohawk in the wider community and, indeed,
the State.
We are all aware of the national economic downturn that has, in one way or another, affected all of
us. Though impacted as well, Lake Mohawk, as a result of good leadership and management, is in
sound fiscal state. At the same time, good management practice dictates careful oversight of ancillary activities and expenditures. You would expect no less of us.
Accordingly, we are asking you to consider being an active participant in this year's July 4th
fireworks display by making a personal donation to this patriotic and entertaining activity.
Our goal this year is $10,000.
Thank you and Happy Spring!
Jay Dunn, Trustee; Chairman, House Committee

carry your beach tags, guests need

there is a dumpster at the beach and
no cleanup crew, so please use it to

on juice bags, water bottles and ice
cream wrappers.

Beaches
Happy Valley Beach
Hello HVBer’s, as of this writing
there is still about two feet of snow
on the ground, but hopefully spring
is just around the corner. This year’s
beach clean-up will be held on Saturday, April 26th, at 9:00 a.m. Any
time you can spare to lend a hand
would be appreciated.
With the summer season approaching the subject of beach funding
becomes very important. I am not
sure if most folks are aware, but with
the exception of Lifeguards, each
beach is responsible for the costs
associated with its operation, including sand, electricity, porta johns,
Cataracts?

playground equipment; swim ropes,

as events. Although LMCC does provide a nominal stipend, it is not
nearly enough to cover expenses.
Donations are our main funding
source and are critical to properly
maintain the beach. I realize the
economy is still not fully recovered
and finances may be tight, but I am
asking for contributions of $45.00
per family to help keep our little gem
a place that we can truly enjoy. Think
about it for a moment; where else
can you bring your family for an
entire season for only $45.00? Of
course if you are a Powerball winner,

do not be shy.
Donations should be made payable

Beaches
Sleepy Lagoon
Hello Spring? I am writing this on the
sixty-five degree day we had in March.
Feeling the warmth of the sun
means summer is on its way. In
preparation, your SLB officers had
another strategy session to firm up the
events calendar and the wish list of
beach projects. More sand is priority
number 1. Super Storm Sandy washed
some into the lagoon and the volleyball court /horseshoe pits need help.
We also want to reinforce the volleyball posts and install a new net.
Other projects discussed include
the canoe racks, building new picnic
tables to replace the much worn ones,
possibly stain all of the tables and
benches for added curb appeal, along
with sealing the wooden swing set. If
you can lend a hand with any of these
projects please let President Mike know
at [email protected]. Teens are welcome and can earn volunteer hours.
Game Night, our first event of 2014,
was a blast for the adults. Next up is
the Kids Easter Egg Hunt & Pizza
Party on Friday, April 11 at 5:30pm,
rain date: Saturday 4/12 at 11am.
Bring a dessert to share. RSVP to
Katie Dennehy at 973 525-9276. See
your email for more details.
Did not get an email? Are you an
SLB member? If not, consider joining. We have started collecting dues,
still $40. Use PayPal online or give
what you can by sending your check
to Mike Dennehy, SLB Treasurer, at
70 Whippoorwill Lane. Dues help
pay for all of the projects mentioned
above, plus much of the events, porto-potty, lights, maintenance supplies, etc. This year there will be
fundraising events again that also
really help pay the bills. Sparta Day
Ice Cream Sale is May 17 at Station
Park and the Annual Beach Opening
Picnic/Cook-off is May 25. More
details next month.

COLD WATER BOATING
Hopefully, the ice has melted on the
lake by now. We had 14-18 inches
thickness during this winter’s Polar
Vortex. Although it should be good
for our lake in keeping weeds under
control, rest assured the water temperature may take some time to
warm up.
Spring like temperatures will get
some of our boaters an early start on
the season. This is great to see, the
lake being used and our boating season begining. However, we would
like to caution our early boaters
about being safe during this low boat
traffic time.
Since the Marine Patrol and other
boaters may not be around to readily

assist, we offer these cold water boating tips from the U.S. Coast Guard.
• As a general rule, if the air and
water temperature added together
equal less than 100 degrees
Fahrenheit, you should take the
following steps.
• Dress for the water temperature,
not the air temperature. Having
lots of layers on will help you survive if you do end up in the water.
• If you suddenly find yourself in the
water, don’t panic!
• Wear a lifejacket or better yet, a
float coat. A float coat is a U.S.
Coast Guard approved personal
floatation device when worn.
These are jackets or coats with
built in floatation.
• Wear a hat. When in the water, 50%
of your body heat is lost through
your head. The hat will help slow
down this heat loss.
• Wear synthetic fabric. Cotton will
keep water next to your skin,
pulling heat from your body. Synthetic fabrics such as nylon or
polyproylene will help keep cold
water off your skin.
• Cold water robs the body of heat
25-30 times faster than air. When
you lose enough body heat to
make your temperature subnormal, you become hypothermic.
• Any person pulled from cold water
should be treated for hypothermia.
Symptoms may include intense
shivering, loss of coordination,
mental confusion, cold and blue
skin, weak pulse, irregular heartbeat, and enlarged pupils. Once
shivering stops, core body temperature begins to drop critically. This
is a life threatening emergency so
call 9-1-1 to seek emergency medical assistance.
Since there may be few boaters on
the lake during this time, boaters
should look out for each other. Enjoy!

outdoor play. It is seldom a problem
finding a partner. Local pros provide

with spring cleanup on Saturday,
April 26th, members are encouraged
to arrive around 8:00 and lend a

The Lakefront Report Spring 2014
With spring around the corner and
most of us hoping that this long
cold winter has finally ended, putting all the snow and cold days
behind us now, with warmer weather and the thought that summer
will be here soon.
The spring outlook for the housing market is optimistic. Prices
have either risen a little, or held
steady, sellers are more realistic
and inventory is lower. The winter
storms of the past few months have
almost certainly curbed buyers’
home browsing. If that is the case
then the answer to “what-role-didthe-weather-play” question will be

answered when spring arrives. I am
hoping we are headed for a busy season of home sales.
The total inventory of lake front
homes here stands at only 20 homes
for sale, priced from $299,000 to
$1,799,900. The homes range from
‘fixer upper’ to luxury, updated and
renovated homes and much in
between.
Seven homes sold during the past
year - sales price $250,000 - $795,000,
and one home listed at a little over one
million is currently ‘under contract’.
I still believe that any home that is
priced realistically in a favorable
location will sell and a good agent
can negotiate any market.
Information based upon reports run March
2014 from Garden State MLS, Data based
upon active, sold, and under contract homes
in MLS Withdrawn, Expired, For Sale by
Owner, or Exclusive sales not included in data.
Information deemed reliable but not
guaranteed. Data is meant to be snapshot of
the current lake front market, but is not a
substitute for an individualized property
comparable market analysis.

Parents Invited to Get Their Smile On
Today, more than ever, parents feel
the challenge of raising responsible,
motivated and self-confident children.
Lake Mohawk resident, Wendy Miller,
offers “Parenting the Love and Logic
Way™”, a parenting course that
focuses on empowering adults with
easy-to-learn, practical techniques
to address the needs and concerns of
family life.
As Love and Logic® Independent
Facilitator and founder of Smile on
Parenting, Miller teaches the techniques that she and her husband have
been utilizing for almost ten years with
their own children. In a small class
setting, she guides participants through
entertaining tutorials, discusses
concepts, helps apply the techniques
learned to individual, real-life scenarios and inspires her clients to go
home and experiment with their new
parenting tools immediately.
Each week participants go home
with a variety of time-tested, world
renowned parenting techniques in
their tool belt. Among many skills,
parents become more capable of set-

problem-solving skills to help them
thrive in the real world.

Shirley Nicholson - 50-year Member of the
GFWC Sparta Woman’s Club
GFWC Sparta Woman’s Clubmembers celebrated the life and accomplishments of former Clubmember
Shirley Nicholson, with a 50th anniversary cake and festivities at their
recent Club luncheon to honor her
for serving as an integral part of their
Club and the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC
(NJSFWC), the oldest and largest volunteer women’s service organization
in the world. The Nicholson daughters, Debra Nicholson Marcellus and
Linda McRoy, were there to commemorate the day.
A congratulatory letter to Shirley
from GFWC President Mary Ellen
Laister was read. Sparta Woman’s Club
Co-Presidents Gaylene Finch and
Stevie Fava expressed what members
have always felt, that Shirley is gracious, caring, thoughtful and has
always had a deep concern and love
for humanity.
Shirley was the 11th and youngest
president of the Sparta Woman’s
Club, having served from 1969 to
1971. Under Shirley’s leadership the
Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta was
formed in 1970. Shirley served as the
Junior Advisor for four years, soon
after she was placed on the State
Honor Roll.
In appreciation for their founder
and in acknowledgment of her
anniversary, the Junior Woman’s
Club of Sparta recently honored
Shirley by sending a donation in her
name to Family Promise, which is
the NJSFWC Special State Project
2012-2014.
An endeavor dear to Shirley’s heart
was the start-up of the Sparta Library,
in early years 75% of the libraries in
the country were founded by local
Federated Women’s Clubs. Shirley
was also the driving force when it
came to having a lower level dug at
construction time so the library
would have a kitchen and extra
meeting rooms. Ever since, many
enjoy the use of those rooms.
During the recent Woman’s Club
luncheon a tribute was expressed
regarding the countless accomplishments Shirley had as a Club President and in all the years to follow.
Mention was made of Shirley’s
courage when her daughter, Wendi
Nicholson Hayden, was stricken with
Scleroderma. Shirley asked the Club
president at the time, Marjorie
Strohsahl, to find a way to urge
research funding for Scleroderma. In
2006, a Resolution was written,
adopted by the Club, passed by NJSFWC and sent to Congress. Thinking
of others was another selfless act on
Shirley’s part.

Phosphorus contributes to the
eutrophication or over-enrichment of
fresh water lakes. This leads to an
increase in undesirable weed and
algae growth. Excess weeds and algae
are harmful to fish and reduce the
aesthetics of a lake. Nitrogen is the
primary cause of over-enrichment in
