The eponymous founder of one of the most
exciting and energetic design companies in
the UK, Matt Podesta has been putting an
original spin on even the most functional
handmade furniture since he graduated
with a degree in furniture design in 1992.
Years of work for Habitat, Tom Dixon,
Smallbone and Mark Wilkinson proved
his virtuosity; today a liveryman in the
Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers,
he is a man who can always be trusted to
transform the everyday into the extraordinary.
Since 2002, Matt and his design team have
channelled their knowledge and enthusiasm
into an inspiring diversity of commissions.

First sketches to final reality
A few snapshots of the Podesta process
Podesta is a truly personal service. We cater
for every taste and every space, including
irregular-shaped rooms, individual lifestyles
and record-breaking shoe collections.
At an initial meeting the general brief is
discussed and suggestions made, often
accompanied by on-the-spot sketches.
Inspired by the scope and creativity displayed
in Matt’s impressive portfolio, clients
are encouraged to give free rein to their
aspirations and requirements, safe in the
knowledge that Podesta will provide them
with a uniquely stylish and practical solution.
Working drawings are computer-generated,
and the necessary woods, finishes and
accessories sourced. The furniture is built
by hand with exceptional care at workshops
selected for their relevant specialism, be it
the art of flawless veneering or the creation
of beautiful dovetail joints.
From single pieces to entire
interiors – and from start to finish – every Podesta project receives the
same level of attention to detail. In fact, our cabinet-makers invest so much love and skill in their works
of art that they usually insist on
seeing the process right through to installation.

We’re like good tailors. We listen to you and

In this modern extension to an old house, we
fused contemporary elements with traditional,
creating a central island that showcases the
bold, striped grain of macassar ebony wood.

At Podesta we believe in improving
the texture of life and preserving
character. In this lovely old beamed
farmhouse, tactile natural wood rubs
along companionably with honed
Carrara marble, smooth black slate
and satin-painted tulipwood and oak
cabinets. Quirky touches such as the
‘feet’ at the base of the Shaker-style
cabinets add to the bespoke effect.
A mix of fitted and free-standing furniture and plain and painted wood
gives this farmhouse kitchen a relaxed yet co-ordinated feel

Wood. We love it, and we love working
with it. Every piece is unique, and the
beauty of our timber – which is carefully
sourced, mainly in the UK – often inspires
our designs. We play with its strengths,
using its colour, tone and grain to add
warmth and textural interest. From a
creative perspective, wood is a paradox:
neutral yet colourful; natural and timeless,
yet able to rise above rustic for stunning
contemporary-with-a-twist effects.
Our cabinet-makers are so skilled that we
know they will always get the very best out

Going with the grain… clean, simple lines and a pristine quartz worktop let
the colour and markings of a Santos rosewood island take centre stage

Streamlined on the outside,
spacious and well-organised
on the inside
As you sit with your glass of wine and
look across this kitchen, you appreciate
the continuity of the design: the island’s
worktop of polished white reconstituted
quartz almost blends with that of the
fitted furniture beyond. There’s nothing
superficial about our cabinetry, however.
At Podesta we pay as much attention
to the inside as we do to the outside:
fitted drawers are configured for specific
purposes and joints beautifully finished.
Cooking is no chore when a kitchen is such a pleasure to use.

This fabulous and fun, retro-chic kitchen
in a new-build house was created in
close collaboration with the owners’
architect and interior designer. The brief
focused on the couple’s love of design,
especially the cabinetry of the 1920s
and ’50s, and their desire for something
truly unique. The kitchen’s wow factor
is actually a combination of the dynamic
geometry of its various free-standing
pieces and the vibrant yellow paint
chosen by the clients.
Colour, form and function combine in a cupboard that uses contrasting tones of wood
to sculptural effect. If we can imagine it, we can make it

When professional meets
playful, the result is certain
to surprise and delight
We love to innovate and would hate to be
predictable. A curved island with an oven
built in to one end; smooth, handle-free
drawer fronts; a bespoke cupboard and
semi-detached table: such elements give a
room an air of energy and excitement.
The choice of wood for each project is an
ecological decision as well as an aesthetic
one: Like all our timber, the English oak and
American black walnut shown here came
from responsibly harvested trees. For the
same reason, where suitable we use acrylic
rather than oil-based paints.

Alternatively, the most utilitarian areas of the house can be given a makeover with
fitted furniture that works perfectly with
its surroundings. The stacked horizontal
rectangles of the design below are inspired
by the proportions of the existing window.

Our place isn’t just in the kitchen. It’s anywhere from bedroom to gun
room that requires some fresh, creative
thinking. The bathroom in this old
house called for a harmony of ancient
and modern: our design incorporates
timeless natural textures and a
buttress-like frame that mimics the
beams and uneven walls of the room.

In this living room, the display cabinet’s
wooden backdrop sets off a favourite
painting, while the shape of the cupboard
handles is reflected in the table supports.
At Podesta we have a vision but we don’t
prescribe. If our designs inspire their users
to live their life their way – calm, crazy or
somewhere in between – we’ve succeeded.

rooms and home cinemas – our scope and
our ideas are unlimited. Perhaps you have set
