A KNIGHTS’ CHALLENGE!
The Coombeshead Academy History department were delighted to welcome the year 5’s from
St Joseph’s for a special medieval themed activity day. Their challenge was to work in teams of 3 to
produce an accurate medieval suit of armour knight. The only equipment they had available was
30 metres of tin foil and some sellotape! The groups worked enthusiastically and produced some
very accurate knights, even if it was a bit warm to be wrapped up in foil!! We look forward to
seeing them all again soon.

AR GRADUATES
Congratulations to our first Accelerated Reader graduates in years 7, 8 & 9. The following
students have achieved a reading age of 16 years or higher, allowing them to graduate from our
reading programme. It is a really impressive achievement and proves how dedication and
enthusiasm for reading leads to brilliant results!
EXPRESSIVE ARTS
YEAR 9 JAZZ BAND
Congratulations to Eve Hirst, Amelie Brinton and Ben Pead who formed a band to perform at a
showcase concert at Denbury Primary School. The concert raised a significant sum of money to
support both the earthquake aid effort in Nepal and Richard’s Wish. The band performed Skyfall
and a jazz version of ‘All About The Bass’. Well done guys!
KINGSKERSWELL TOWN TWINNING CONCERT
On the 6th June, The Coombeshead
Academy Soul Band were invited to perform at
the Kingskerswell Town Twinning Concert at
Newton Abbot Rugby Club. The Soul Band
performed a 40 minute set of music. It was a
privilege to have been invited to play at the
event.
The pupils all worked very hard in
preparation for the event and the members of
the audience were very impressed with the
huge amount of talent we have here at
Coombeshead Academy.
The Music Department would like to thank all
the students who attended and performed at
CHRISTIAN AID 2015
A beautiful day, a good cause and students to be very proud
of!
On the 16th May we were asked to perform at the annual
Christian Aid Charity Walk. We arranged for the Coombeshead
Academy Folk Band and various student led groups to perform
at the event. The students were very well received and the
feedback we had from members of the public was excellent.
A big thank you to all of the incredibly talented students
involved!
Head of Music Andy Tyner said, “It’s amazing to see the wealth
and depth of musical talent at Coombeshead Academy. The
students are full of confidence and have a great enthusiasm to
display their musical abilities at outside of school events. The support we receive from the pupils
and parents is great and this helps us to give them as many opportunities we can to perform as
musicians.”
A follow up performance has already been confirmed for next year’s event, watch this space!

SIXTH FORM ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
WILLIAM COOK
Current occupation:
Quantity Surveyor
What was the most important life lesson you
learnt in 6th form?
When did you leave Coombeshead?
2007
Retrospectively I think the life lesson was that
6th form opened the door to expand my life
in any direction I wanted at an accelerated
pace. 2 years at 6th form catapults you into
University and from there you can work
anywhere in the world, doing anything you
want.
How old are you now?
26
What did you study in 6th form?
First year AS: Geography, English Literature,
Business Studies and Tourism, dropping
English Literature for A-Level.
Did you go to uni, if yes to study what?
Read for a BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying
Consultancy at Kingston University between
2009 and 2011.
What was the best thing about 6th form?
The huge step from being taught because
you had to, to being taught something you
wanted to learn.
What was the worst?
There are a lot of distractions for a 17 year
old! Focussing on attending for your future is
difficult when you live for each day.
If you
could do
it again,
what
would
you
change

why?

SPORT & PE
YEAR 7 ROUNDERS
Last week, the year 7 girls competed in their first rounders fixture against
Paignton Community College. The girls learnt a lot throughout the first
innings, losing 10-4 due to Paignton’s strong fielding and batting skills.
However the girls fought back by adopting similar tactics to finish the
match only 1.5 rounders behind. It was a brilliant comeback and the team
learned a lot from the experience. Next up, the girls are involved in a year
7 tournament and are ready to apply their new skills in the competition!
COOMBESHEAD STUDENTS MATCH BARCELONA’S TREBLE!
Three Year 8 students, Georgia Wilson, Beck
Hannah and Declan Feasby have been part of
the highly successful Liverton United Under 13
team this season. They won their own version of
the ‘treble’ by winning the Devon County Cup,
Pioneer Cup and Pioneer League.
Over the season the team played 27
League and Cup games and scored an
incredible total of 222 goals. In finishing top of
the league, the team won 16 out of 16 games,
scoring 135 goals and conceding only
20. Congratulations to Georgia, Beck and
Declan!
SPORTS SPECTACULAR
On Thursday June 11th, 420 Year 5 students arrived for a sport spectacular at Forches Cross.
Throughout the students took part in athletics and games sessions. They also had the chance to
make a smoothie by cycling on the smoothie bike, have penalty shoot outs and mini games with
Torquay united and play netball games with the Teignbridge Titans
All of the games and athletics stations were run by our amazing Leadership Academy and Miss
Hardingham’s Year 9 PE groups. They did an outstanding job and every teacher that attended had
nothing but compliments about these students. They were a real asset to Coombeshead Academy.
There were two cups up for grabs on the day; The Champions Cup and the Sportsmans Cup. The
Champions Cup was
won by Bovey Tracy
Primary School for their
amazing results during
the athletics stations.
The Sportsman Cup
was based on teamwork,
friendliness,
enthusiasm
and team spirit. This cup
went to Ipplepen Primary
School.
An amazing day for all
students!
Well
done,
everyone!
