INTRODUCTION SILVER STAG was founded in a garage by a couple of sportsmen who enjoyed turning old files and saw blades into hunting, fishing, and camping knives. The original knives were modest and rustic, but functioned exceptionally well in the field. It didn’t take too long for demand and customer reorders to slowly but consistently increase. The hobby turned into a business and the SILVER STAG brand was launched in 1998. Over the past 16 years ago, we have been extremely focused on improving our product quality and selection. The company has come a long way since the “Garage Days”, and the team at SILVER STAG has worked hard to meticulously and consistently build additional value into the product line. For example, not too long ago one of our first customers returned a knife for a tune-up. This particular knife was one of the original knives manufactured back in my garage. The production crew took a look at the knife and could not believe it was a SILVER STAG. The quality was rough and the knife was not very attractive. Fortunately the customer included a note that explained how much he cherished his knife. The knife had been with him on every hunt over the past 15 years. It consistently performed excellent in the field and he planned on passing it down to his son one day. This was a knife that only two people could truly appreciate; the owner of the knife, and the founder who built it. In-house CNC plasma machine This one knife made me stop and think about how far we had grown and evolved over the years. It made me appreciate my team’s commitment and dedication required to consistently improve our production output, while at the same time, building a higher quality product. It’s taken an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to build tens of thousands of knives for our customer base over the years while consistently improving the value of our product line. Customer reorders and their testimonials continue to drive us. We are proud that we have never strayed from our original hands on approach to manufacturing. Even today, every SILVER STAG Knife manufactured is ground, polished, assembled, shaped, and sharpened “Free Hand”. While no two finished knives will ever look exactly alike, all SILVER STAG Knives share certain features that make them extraordinary field tools. To start, the blades are designed by sportsmen and are exceptionally practical. The blades are manufactured exclusively from the highest quality domestically produced High Carbon Steel. Authentic North American antler is built into every design. The finished knives are stunningly attractive, incredibly functional, and extremely durable. SILVER STAG is the only brand in the world manufactured exclusively by hand from domestically produced high carbon tool steels and North American shed antler, including authentic hand forged Damascus steel blades. In summary, the team at SILVER STAG has taken a step back in time when high quality tools were handmade by proud Americans dedicated to producing quality products at a fair price. This tradition lives on at the SILVER STAG manufacturing facility located in Blaine, Washington. Thank you for supporting our small company and American manufacturing. We sincerely appreciate your business. Every blade is hollow ground free hand. PRODUCTION PROCESS We use three types of High Carbon Tool Steel to manufacture our exclusive blade designs; D2, 1095, and 15N20, (Steel specifics can be reviewed above each product series listing). Our steel is purchased directly from American Steel Mills. The blades are profiled by the company’s in-house CNC Plasma Cutting machine. The blade blanks are then surface ground to remove the thin layer of scale on the raw steel. The remainder of the manufacturing process is performed “Free Hand”. Each and every blade is hollow ground by hand under Beta belt grinder machines. The hollow grinding process is an art that takes a keen eye and steady hands. The grind plays a critical role in the overall functionality of the blade and will impact how sharp you can get the edge. The blades are polished and heattreated to a 58 to 62 Rockwell hardness. Every SILVER STAG knife has North American shed antler built into the design. The Deer, Elk, Moose, or Caribou antler is selected based on the horns size, shape, curvature, weight, color, and texture. Pins and epoxy adhesive permanently bond the antler and blade together. Every antler handle is shaped so that the knife feels comfortable to hold and use. The blades and handles are polished under buffing wheels, then each knife is sharpened by hand. (Please visit The SILVER STAG website to take a video tour of our production process). Moose antler scale production for Slab Series PRODUCTION/MERCHANDISING Every knife ships in its own individual box, accompanied with a high quality leather sheath and limited lifetime warranty card. UPC stickers are available upon request. We offer a SILVER STAG merchandising display fixture to our new dealers. The display is very attractive, saves counter space, and has proven to sell incremental product. The display holds 12 to 16 knives and contains a back door lock. If a new dealer orders 13 or more knives, we sell the display fixture at our cost, and subsidize it by providing our new dealer with a no charge knife that can be sold for approximately the same cost as the display purchase price, (Fixture Dimensions: H =24”, W = 15”, D = 7” ). Consumer brochures, Logo plaques, and antler display stands are available for glass case merchandising. DISTRIBUTION SILVER STAG knives are distributed through high quality sporting good, cutlery, and specialty stores. You will not find SILVER STAG products sold in big box or mass merchant discount chains. Our dealers are encouraged to sell at our MSR pricing, and adhere to our MAPP pricing policy. Our Wholesale Accounts representing SILVER STAG are required to share our MAPP pricing with their dealer base. The SILVER STAG line is an exceptional value. While many custom knife makers charge three to five hundred dollars for comparable or inferior products, the majority of the SILVER STAG line retails in the $80 to $160 price range. SILVER STAG knives do not need to be discounted to sell through. Dealers that carry a good selection, communicate the lines features to their customers, and consistently restock what sells through, are always successful with the line. Locking merchandising store fixture WHAT’S NEW We continue our tradition of improving our product selection, product quality, and production infrastructure. Prior to rolling out a new design, we take into consideration recent customer demand and feedback. In addition, we try to be creative and build additional designs for our most popular product series. And occasionally we design something outside of the box that we really like. Over the last few months, we have rolled out a handful of new designs that are highlighted in one of the following Product Series. We have also added a Steak Knife set to our new “Chuck Wagon” series, (formally Butcher Series). New side mount Large Folder Sheath We recently made some improvements to a few of our existing styles. For example we have replaced our brass guards with stain resistant steel that will eliminate oxidation and maintenance. We have also improved our leather sheaths and added a couple new sheath designs to our larger folding Knives. We have replaced our folding brass pivot pins with new stainless steel tension adjusting barrel pins. We are also working on a new series using “Powder Steel” (XHP), with domestic exotic hard wood handles. This is a work in progress and we will keep you updated as the new line takes shape. To increase our production infrastructure we have recently purchased a new CNC Plasma cutting machine that will increase our raw blade profiling speed. We are also planning a factory remodel that will add 3,000 square feet to our manufacturing facility. Detailed finishing work PRODUCT LINE SUMMARY The SILVER STAG Product line is made up of over 60 different blade designs that range from 2” to over 21” in length. Every design is categorized into one of ten series, and each series is categorized by the steel, antler, and construction method used in the manufacturing process. These Series are; CROWN, DAMASCUS, TOOL STEEL, SLAB, ELK STICK, POINT, SCRIMSHAW, POCKET, CHUCK WAGON, and SWORD. Manufacturing our brass hilts A finished Notch Folder D2 CROWN SERIES - D2 steel is an air hardening, high carbon, and high chromium tool steel possessing extremely high wear resisting properties. D2 steel is commonly used in the machining industries to manufacturer dies and punches that repeatedly cut other materials. D2 Steel is extremely tough and durable! The high chromium content provides good corrosion resistance, (but it can and will rust if it is not properly taken care of). The blades are heat treated to a 62 Rockwell hardness and are guaranteed to retain their factory edge for extended periods of heavy use. When it does come time to re-sharpen, the blades will hone to a razor edge. There is only one mill is the U.S. that manufactures D2 steel. In our professional opinion, there is nothing better than D2 steel. The following Crown Series features North American Deer and Elk antler crown/burr handles. The billet is folded and re-welded several times to produce layers, (SILVER STAG Damascus = 150 to 250 layers). Patterns are created by manipulating the steel during the forge welding process, (SILVER STAG offers a random and twist pattern). The blades are hand profiled from the layered steel billet block. The combination of layered hard and soft steels creates blade flexibility, toughness, and produces invisible serrations on the edge that aid cutting. SILVER STAG Damascus blades are extremely functional and durable. The nickel in the 15N20 steel keeps corrosion at bay, but the blades can and will rust if they are not occasionally oiled. An up-graded, hand laced leather sheath is included with every style. TOOL STEEL SERIES -1095 High Carbon Tool Steel is also referred to as, “Cutlery Spring Steel”, and is well known for its use in manufacturing commercial saw blades. This extreme carbon steel hones to a razor sharp edge (better than any stainless steel), retains its edge (better than most stainless steels), and is easier to sharpen, (compared to stainless steel). This steel is often used to manufacture car springs, rail road spikes, and hand tools. SILVER STAG 1095 blades are heat treated to a 58 Rockwell Hardness. Traditional jewelling is applied to the blades. This process involves taking a wire mess bit and pressing down on the blade with a drill press to create swirls on the blade. The indented swirl pattern on the blade surface assists the blade retain oil for corrosion protection. This is a classic and traditional line.
