Welcome to Bespoked Bristol - The UK Handmade Bicycle
Show
A celebration of the handmade bicycle industry.
It’s a very exciting time for frame building at the moment. The depth of talent and level of
enthusiasm is quite astonishing. The craftsmanship on display here is amongst the best in
the world.
The people who make these wonderful bicycles are the people you will meet and talk with
at the show. They are the ones with the skills to tailor a bicycle to meet your requirements
to make the bike of your dreams. We have asked some of these talented individuals to
combine their skills to make a bicycle live at the show for one very lucky person. Watching a
true master at work is a sight to behold and we hope that this event helps give insight into
what makes the bicycles on display here such special machines.
We would like to thank everyone who has attended and all those exhibiting for making this
year’s show happen. Our thanks go to all who have contributed to the Live Frambuild.

Since we opened our doors in Spring 2009, we have built over 500 bikes for our very
satisfied customers. All our frames are hand-built in the UK using British steel. At
14 Bike Co, we don’t simply put you on a bike – we build a bike for you. We start by
measuring for the right size frame. If we have the correct frame in stock, then we
can move on to the next stage. If we don’t, then we’ll build one especially.
Bike Science was established in March 2010 by Andy Sexton. Andy has over twenty
five years of competitive biking experience and over twenty years as a triathlete. While
working at Planet X he identified the need to be able to offer accurate, professional bike
fitting services to riders wishing to buy bikes without being able to try the actual bike
for size first and riders wishing to optimise their riding position to increase performance,
avoid injury or improve comfort. He started Bike Science with these aims in mind.

18Bikes have been producing custom frames in the Peak District since 2006. We design
and make frames one at a time to ensure we create the best frame possible. We use the
most appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques and can design and build
any style of frame. We are best known for mountain bike hardtails using Reynolds 853,
but the bikes we are bringing to this years show will demonstrate how versatile we are.
Expect road bikes, lugs, stainless steel, fillet brazing and even aluminium.
Boneshaker Magazine is a celebration of cycling and the people who do it. Full of
articles, personal stories and anecdotes about people and projects doing great
things with bicycles around the globe. It is our hope that the magazine will both
inspire and entertain, raise awareness and bring a smile to your face. Appealing to
both bike-heads and those who may not yet have experienced the true joy and

Brompton Bicycle designs and manufactures the famous Brompton folding bike, a bike that
marries the performance of a full-sized, agile bicycle with the convenience of a truly portable
and storable package. Finely-engineered and elegant, the Brompton has a full-sized frame,
made mainly of steel for strength and stiffness. All of our bikes are made bespoke to order,
with many millions of permutations available. And the bikes are no more unique than their
manufacture – since Andrew Ritchie invented the Brompton in his flat overlooking the
Brompton Oratory, every Brompton is still hand brazed and built in London.

Over almost a century and a half, Brooks England has grown from a small workshop
to a byword in quality craftsmanship. Back in 1865, John Boultbee Brooks left his
hometown of Hinckley in Leicestershire with just £20 in his pocket. On 28 October
1882, Mr Brooks filed his first saddle patent. Inspired by the timeless products
designed by our predecessors, we have revived the original slogan ‘Saddles, Bags,
Etc’ and introduced a range of cycle bags and other cycling accessories.

Shin-Ichi is from a family of frame builders, his father started Cherubim in 1965 and was the
head builder for over thirty years, his uncle’s started the famous 3Rensho & Miyuki brands.
Cherubim is now the only one of these brands remaining.

The story of the most famous steel tubes in the history of cycling began in 1919 when A.L.
Colombo founded his steel plant with the ambition to “to do business in iron and steel and
make a fair and honest profit”. The result was the history of cycling as we know it: legendary
tube sets AIR, MAX, SL, SLX, NIVACROM (EL and Genius), Altec, Starship and Spirit right up
to 2009’s XCR, the world’s first ever tubeless stainless steel tube set which allows for the
production of a steel frame competitive at the highest level of the sport on all levels: weight,
rigidity, fatigue resistance and of course the remarkably superior handling of steel.
Demon Frameworks was established a few years ago with a vision to produce

engineering disciplines. The partnership was developed out of a common pursuit for
a hand built steel bicycle frame in a return to artisan craftsmanship and a personal
obsession with the bespoke production process. The framesets are fabricated one at
a time with care and attention paid to the unique Field cycles details. The production
process is the combination of the maker’s personal skill and the customer’s interpretation

Strada Hand Built Wheels was launched in 2010 to reintroduce the benefits of hand

surface before selecting a rim, hub and spokes to build a wheelset to match you

Since 1981, Swallow has hand-built only bespoke frames for discerning clients around
the World. Each Swallow frame is unique to match the owner’s size, needs and style.
You will speak with the person that will design and build your frame during a detailed
consultation, using a Calfee sizing jig and BikeCAD Pro. We use Reynolds 953, Columbus
and other selected stainless and steel tubing with fillet brazing or hand-cut lugs to
achieve exactly the bicycle or tandem you desire. Adventurous clients can build their

Everything from Tonic Fabrication is hand made in house by the two man team Landon &
Tony. This allows them the flexibility to construct some of the toughest, smoothest and most
rugged frames we’ve seen in years. Shying away from fancy features and pointless brazing,
the technical side of Tonic bikes really shines through; their attention to frame design, their
signature head tube stack, the use of BB30 in their cross models and the wishbone stays are
subtle nods for those in the know. When all these features come together you get something

Ted James Design is a new company started by myself, Ted James - rider, designer,
builder. I’ve only been building frames for three years, but have been thinking about it
for nearly 30. I come from a mountain bike and BMX background and have always been
interested in the development of the design technology, which lead me to design a
fixed gear trick frame and components in collaboration with 14 Bike Co. All my work is
manufactured in the UK. Everyday work is frame renovations and repairs, custom builds,
prototyping and riding.
Trykit Conversions is a one man opperation. I produce top class touring and racing
tricycles, tandem tricycles, mainly from the range Reynolds tubing, and conversion
axles. All are two wheel drive with a special cassette body, designed for tricycles
only and made in house. I will be displaying a tandem tricycle, a racing tricycle and
a conversion axle, along with various associated parts that are designed and made
by me for tricycles.

The frames are manufactured in Olly’s workshop in Chippenham Wiltshire (his own words)
“I say workshop – it’s a brick built 8’x6’ shed I like to call a workshop”). Olly’s target is to
make 10 frames a year, initially focusing on completely bespoke (no lugs or pre-bent, off the
shelf tubing) 29’er mountain bike frames aimed at mountain bikers interested in extending
those single day rides into Bike Packing adventures! For the uninitiated, Bike Packing entails
