CHATTOOGA RIVER RANGER DISTRICT

Volunteer Opportunities on the Beautiful
CHATTOOGA RIVER RANGER DISTRICT
Upper Holcomb Creek Falls, Holcomb Creek Trail
This easternmost part of the Chattahoochee National Forest borders on the Carolinas and
covers an area from the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River westward to the Blue Ridge Valley.
Easy accessibility via I-85/985, U.S. 23/441, and U.S. 129 makes it a major destination not only
for local recreationists, but also for those from metro Atlanta and beyond. The heavily used
Forest Service roads and trails that provide access to its diverse recreational opportunities
need regular maintenance to be ecologically sustainable.
Popular destinations on the CRRD include the river for boating and fishing, 28 miles of the
historic Bartram Trail for hiking and camping, several well-known waterfall and wilderness
trails in the mountainous areas, and horse and bike trails in the Lake Russell Wildlife
Management Area. With increased usage and persistent manpower and budget cuts, the
Forest Service is relying more than ever on volunteer help to maintain trails. Volunteers on
the Chattooga River Ranger District have wonderful opportunities to observe exceptionally
diverse plant and bird life, as well as highly rated waterfalls. So, bring your binoculars and
camera and join our volunteer force. If you like wildlife and learning more about the Forest,
you’ll be glad you did.
