CHESS:revolutionized!
Garry Kasparov –
The Greatest Chess Player of All Time
Who is Garry Kasparov?
Garry was born on April 13, 1963 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, in the old Soviet Union. By the
age of seven, Garry was a chess prodigy. In 1980, he won the World Junior Championship. On
November 9, 1985 Garry became the youngest ever World Chess Champion, defeating Anatoli
Karpov. This made him the 13th World Champion and he had already become the number-one
ranked player in the world. In January of 1990, Kasparov created two milestones in chess history,
moving past Bobby Fischer’s best-ever rating of 2785 and then breaking the magical 2800 sound
barrier, the first player in Chess history to do so. From December 1981 to February 1991, Kasparov
made history by not losing a single event for nearly ten years. This was the period in which he
created his reputation for invincibility. In 1988, a computer program was devised to analyze a vast
collection of chess statistics, in order to create a ranking of the all-time chess greats. Top of the list
was the twenty-five year old Russian, Garry Kasparov. Garry Kasparov was undisputed world chess
champion and #1 ranked player for over eighteen years.
A Reputation for Excellence
Over the last 2 decades, the name Kasparov has been synonymous with excellence. His peerless
record over decades, and the respect that came along with it, ensures that anything bearing the
Kasparov name exudes superiority. Kasparov is the biggest name in chess and is a true household
name from both his record of excellence and his run-ins with IBM’s Deep Blue. He remains in
the public eye through his efforts in promoting chess as a learning tool and his vocal support for
democratic progress & reform in Russia.
Brand Reach
The name Garry Kasparov is recognized by both casual and serious chess players, and also has
strong name recognition with the non-chess-playing public. This makes products under his name
a great gift item for a very large demographic. Chess product sales are highly driven by gift-giving
events, so this factor is critical.
New Excitement to the #1 Game in the World
Nobody has ever done a brand-enhanced line of chess before, and since chess is typically a gift
item this type of added-value is highly compelling to consumers. The Kasparov range provides the
opportunity for any retailer to breathe some new life into their chess range, which has likely been
static for years. The Kasparov chess range will allow for higher turnover, higher margin, and higher
priced point items then current chess products.
Compelling Values of Kasparov for Children and Families
Kasparov is a large proponent of the benefits chess offers children for intellectual development and
self-esteem, as well as strengthening of families. He has started a foundation to help promote the
use of chess in schools. Following these values, this range serves to promote traditional games in
your stores, and the family-values they promote: spending more time together in an interactive, funfilled way, as opposed to computer games, which caused families to spend less time together. This
message has strong benefits not only for chess, but your overall games area, the overall image of
your stores, the values you want to promote, and the business you want to attract.
a Message from
Garry Kasparov
Dear Friends,
When I won the World Chess Championship in 1985, chess was my life. It was
everything I had known and I loved it without reservation. Now, in 2006, after I have
retired from professional chess, I have found that this love is for life.
The joys and benefits of chess are as limitless as the game itself. It provides competition
and entertainment for children and adults. It is an international language that knows
no barriers. The rules are as universal as the pleasure the game brings to everyone who
learns it. Chess expands the mind, teaches us the value of concentration and preparation,
and allows us to enter into the rich world of chess players past and present.
The Greatest Chess Player of All Time
World Champion for 18 years
What is the game of chess? Is it a sport? Or is it an art? Or a science? It has the struggle
and competitive spirit of a sport. After all, the goal is to win. It has the creativity and
imaginative fantasy of art. Surely the objective is to produce something beautiful. And it
possesses the logic and calculation of a science. Our aim should be to play with absolute
accuracy. We must therefore conclude it is all three wrapped into one. Its rich and
inexhaustible nature makes the game of chess a gift for life.
Remarkably, the game has also proven to be an invaluable educational aide and one of
the latest pedagogical tools for young students. Through the game of chess, children learn
analytical and disciplined thinking skills, which are applicable to many other intellectual
pursuits. More than any other game, chess has the potential to transform a child. If
taught correctly, chess can be a student’s driving force, helping him/her in every aspect of
critical thinking development.
Undefeated for over 10 years
World-famous for his battles against IBM’s Deep Blue
Chess is also extremely beneficial in raising self-esteem, teaching determination, selfmotivation and sportsmanship. It’s one of the few positive in-school and extra-curricular
activities for students of all ages and from all back grounds. Chess is the one great
equalizer in education, in which anyone with determination to succeed can excel.
Some interesting things about chess:
• A 2-yr study conducted in NY by IBM found that learning chess improves reading
test scores and reading performance in elementary schools.
• Grades increased in all subjects for young students taking part in a chess
experiment.
• Learning chess improves both memory and verbal reasoning skills. Learning chess
improves mathematical problem solving abilities.
• Learning chess had a positive influence on the development of both numerical and
verbal aptitudes.
The only true household-name in chess
• A knowledge of chess is encouraged as a way to develop a preschooler’s intellect and
academic readiness.
• Learning chess promotes earlier development of intellectual maturation and
cognitive abilities.
• In just one year, chess tuition will improve a student’s learning abilities,
concentration, application, sense of logic, self-discipline, respect, behavior and the
ability to take responsibility for his/her own actions.
These sets have been developed under my careful supervision, and bringing these sets
into your stores will ensure you contribute to creating hundreds of hours of cherished
memories for all your loyal customers who buy a set and play this wonderful game. Chess
remains the most popular game in the world, and by promoting chess in your stores you
are by association helping to promote the intellectual development of children, as well as
creating opportunities for families to spend quality time together again. I hope the care
we put into these products will help chess to emerge as the star of your games items, for
the good of the game and for the good of the children.
Sincerely,

rethought!

A new look to classic chess pieces.
Traditionally Staunton chess pieces diminish in height when moving away
from the center of the board. This means the king and queen are tallest,
followed by bishop, knight, and lastly the rook.
Kasparov has always questioned the logic of this, since the rook is a
stronger and more highly valued piece then the bishop or knight. The smaller
height makes the piece seem less important to beginner players and affects
their strategy.
Kasparov chess pieces have been re-designed to ensure the size of each
piece is relative to its value. This is a significant evolution and improvement
to chess piece design!

Traditional Staunton Design
A true value-added feature.
Sadly virtually all chess sets come with instructions that provide poor
guidance to new players on how to play the game, and no guidance on
the wondrous strategy that makes chess the great game it is.
Each Kasparov set comes with a large booklet providing clear, detailed
instructions from the basic setup and playing methods, all the way into
playing strategy, to help new players fall in love with the game.
