AUCTION Knifemaker David Griffin explains his craft to a visitor at his booth at the recent Anglers Expo. Members of the AKA teach at various events, donate knives to worthy causes, and promote the craft across the nation. It is estimated that Arkansas has more master knife craftsman than any other state. Members of the organization “uphold the highest standards in their business practices and craft.”* (AKA website). “I have received so much help from the AKA member,” Grifin said. “The members are always willing to teach and share. The organization also helps its member promote on a national level. That has been a huge help for me.” Probably the most famous knife of all times is the Bowie Knife, named after its designer Jim Bowie, Bowie designed the ist knife in 1930 and used it in a couple of famous duels which help fuel the fascination with his knife. Bowie reined the design and others copied the basic design characteristic, a long sheath with a cross guard and clip point. The Bowie knife is still one of the most popular knives today. The popularity of knife making subsided for several years and remained relatively dormant outside the craft until Arkansas knife maker Jimmy Lile crafted a knife called First Blood Knife which was used in the movie Rambo. You know the story, the knife became known as the Rambo knife and the rest is history.
