INTRODUCTION
Accurate laboratory diagnosis is an essential
first step in the management of parasitic
diseases, both at the level of the individual
patient and the community.
Microscopy is a mainstay in laboratory
diagnosis. However it requires a high level of
expertise to ensure reliability.
The new powerful tools of biochemistry,
immunology and molecular biology
complement microscopic diagnosis.
This 5-day intensive course on diagnostic
parasitology aims to review, update and
strengthen the knowledge and skills of health
professionals involved in teaching, research
and diagnostic work dealing with parasitic
diseases.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Identify the important morphologic
features used in the identification of
parasites and medically important
arthropods;
Perform various laboratory procedures
used in the diagnosis of parasitic infections
for clinical and research applications;
Demonstrate specific methods and
procedures for collection, preservation and
processing of parasitic specimens; and
Understand the latest concepts
regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis and
quality assurance, treatment and control of
parasitic infections.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Intensive laboratory-based course
Lectures/discussions, video and
film.
Core activities are:
 Individual work with parasite
specimens
 Hands-on diagnosis of common
protozoan and helminthic
infections.
