Mary Ann Bleeke, LCSW-C, ACHP-SW Education: Master’s in Social Work from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo MI and an additional 2 year post-graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy What is your approach to patient care? As a social worker, I believe in building on the individual and family interactions and strengths to empower them to achieve their own visions and goals. It takes a “village” to meet the challenges of physical illnesses and my hope is to facilitate the relationships with the individual, the family and the community resources that may be helpful. What types of patients do you see? Currently my practice is limited to Palliative Medicine which could be anyone with chronic disease processes and their families/caregivers. How is your practice different from others? I am excited and energized by the highly trained team I am able to practice with; working with physicians and nurse practitioners assisting the whole person in their environment. Are you from this area? No, I grew up outside of Buffalo NY. I attended undergraduate training in Indiana and spent my adult life in the Midwest until I moved to the mid-Atlantic region in 2004. What do you enjoy most about being a social worker? Social work has always afforded me the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives; to listen respectfully and to facilitate communication and problem solving abilities.
