Using a soap cutter, cut off and weigh 10 oz. of the Ultra White Soap Base. Cut soap up into smaller chunks and place in glass measuring cup. 3. Place in microwave and heat soap just until it has melted. Remove and stir. 4. Place bowl with soap on scale and tare to zero. Add 1 oz. HANDMADE EMAGAZINE • MARCH 20 14 liquid glycerin to melted soap. 5. Using a hand mixer, begin to mix soap/glycerin mixture. 6. While soap is mixing, add 16 oz. of Foaming Bath Whip. 7. Once Bath Whip has blended in, turn speed up higher for 1-2 minutes. Mixture will become creamy and look like marshmallow cream. 8. Turn mixer to medium speed and add 1 cup of sugar every 15 seconds until all 6 cups of sugar have been added. 9. While mixer is on medium speed, add 1 oz. of fragrance. Continue to mix on medium speed until fully blended (about 60 seconds). 10. Take out half of the batch and put in a separate bowl. 11. To one bowl add Crafters Choice Neon Laser Lemon Dye Powder. Mix with a spatula until color is fully incorporated. Do not make color too dark. This powder will actually brighten up after 24 hours. 12. In the other bowl, add the Crafters Choice Neon Bunch Berry Purple Dye Powder until desired shade is achieved. 13. If the scrub does not seem thick enough to hold its shape when piped, let it sit for a few hours. It will thicken up on its own. Or, you can try adding an additional cup of sugar. 14. Fill a cake piping bag with one of the colored scrubs. Or, fill a large plastic food bag and cut off the tip of a corner to use You can pipe out the chicks onto a cookie sheet. 15. Pipe the yellow scrub in an oval shape. On one end, leave a little tip for the tail. 16. For the neck and head: Apply heavy pressure in short bursts to make 3 layers. On the last layer, pull piping bag away quickly for a smaller layer for the head. You should have a little extra at the end of the top layer for the beak. 17. Continue in this manner until all the yellow scrub has been used. Depending on how large you make the chicks will determine how many the recipe will yield. Our chicks were about 2 inches long, some slightly less. 18. Repeat steps 14-16 using the purple scrub. 19. For the eyes: Add two chocolate sprinkles, one on each side of the chickʼs head. Repeat for all the chicks. 20. Let scrubs sit overnight. They can be covered loosely with plastic wrap if desired. 21. Our recipe yielded approximately 100 chicks. This gave us 33 bags of product. 22. Lay out 33 rectangle soap cups on a table. 23. Weigh about 50 ounces of white soap and cut up into small chunks. Place in glass measuring cup. 24. Heat in microwave until completely melted. Remove and stir. 25. Pour melted soap into the bottom of each rectangle soap cup. We filled ours about 1/2 inch deep. Spritz top of each soap with rubbing alcohol to release any surface bubbles. Let soap set up. 26. Once soap has completely set up, you can start assembling the chicks in their nest. 27. Place some brown crinkle paper on top of the soap. Place 3 chicks on top of the “nest”. Place in cello bag and tie with ribbon. Continue until they are all assembled. 28. Labels can be placed on the bottom of the bag or you can tie a tag around the top along with the ribbon. Handmade eMagazine is not responsible for the products you create from our supplies. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron. 2. Set silicone mold on a cookie sheet for stability. This will also allow for an easier clean up. 3. Measure the baking soda, citric acid and clay. Pour ingredients into a mixing bowl and mix well with a wire whisk. If you find there are a lot of clumps, using a sifter will allow you to break them up better. 4. Measure 1 oz. of fragrance into a plastic beaker. Drizzle into different locations of the mixture. Do not pour all of fragrance into one location of the bowl. 5. Measure out evenly and separate mixture into 5 different bowls - approx. 10 oz. in each bowl. 6. Using the 1 ml. scoop, add just under 1/2 scoop of one color into first bowl. Repeat using a different color and add to the next bowl. Continue until each bowl has a color added to it. 7. Take one bowl and stir color into mixture with a wire whisk. Try to break up any clumps you might find. 8. We recommend using gloves for the next step. 9. Taking a spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol, begin to spritz colored mixture. Spritz with one hand and mix with the other. The mixture should be slightly moist to be able to hold together. 10. To test readiness of bath fizzies, take small amount of mixture and close into the palm of your hand. If mixture sticks together, it is ready. If not, continue spritzing a little more with rubbing alcohol. 11. Be careful not to get mixture too wet. This will cause fizzies to “grow” and start to fizz. 12. When at the correct consistency, press a few tablespoons of the mixture into the mold cavity. Press firmly. Add more until you have reached the top with it firmly packed. 13. NOTE: The bottom of our plastic beaker works great for pressing mixture down into the round cavity or you can just use your fingers. 14. Let fizzies completely harden. Then carefully turn mold over and gently push on bottom to remove fizzies. Set aside and repeat above steps until all colors have been made. 15. TO PACKAGE: Place one fizzie of each color into a shrink wrap bag. Position fizzies in the middle of the bag and tie both ends with curling ribbon. 16. Taking a hair dryer, quickly shrink the middle area around the “candy tarts” just until it tightens up. Cut the very end of the bag that is sealed. You now have a “Candy Tart” fizzie! Using a plastic dropper, pipe melted soap into the corners of the cross only for all 3 cavities. 15. When soap has hardened, turn mold over to see the colored details in your soap cavity. If there is any soap overrun, simply take a toothpick, wooden skewer or something with a pointy tip to scrape the extra soap out of areas you do not want colored soap. 16. Weigh 10 oz. of the Crafters Choice Premium Goat Milk soap and cut into small cubes. Place soap in glass measuring cup and heat in microwave until soap has melted. 17. Using a plastic dropper, add 8.5 ml. fragrance oil and stir well. 18. Check soap temperature to be sure it is at or below 125°F. Otherwise, the hot soap can melt the colored soap already poured. 19. Using a plastic bottle with sprayer, spritz the inside of each soap cavity well with alcohol. This will ensure the goat milk soap will adhere to the colored details. 20. Pour melted goat milk soap slowly into each cavity until it reaches the top. Spritz, again, with alcohol to release any surface air bubbles. 21. After soaps set for about 10 minutes, place mold in freezer for about 20 minutes until soap completely hardens. This will help the soap release easily from mold. 22. When soap has hardened, carefully remove from mold. Repeat about steps to make next 3 bars. Handmade eMagazine is not responsible for the products you create from our supplies. WHAT YOU NEED: DIRECTIONS: 6.6 oz. water 4 oz. lye 7 oz. pomace olive oil 7 oz. rice bran oil 8.4 oz. coconut oil 4.2 oz. aloe butter 1.4 oz. castor oil 1T cobalt blue ultramarine mixed with 2T water 1T matte orchid ultramarine mixed with 2T water 1T water dispersible titanium dioxide mixed with 2T water 1.2 oz. WSP Spring Rain Fragrance Oil Latte Frother (optional) (This recipe fills one WSP silicone loaf mold) Begin by preparing the colorants. Mix each in a separate cup as suggested above (with water) and set aside. (Tip: If colorants settle on bottom of cup, try mixing with a frother. If lumps still remain, strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth. Lumps in the colorant will appear in the final soap so we want to avoid them.) Melt coconut oil and aloe butter. Add liquid oils. At desired temperature for oils and water (between room temperature and 110F recommended), add lye solution to oils and bring to very light trace. Stir in fragrance oil quickly. Add titanium dioxide mixture and stickblend to disperse, mix well with spatula along container edges and bottom to insure consistency. Pour half of the soap into the mold. Divide remaining soap equally. Drizzle each color into its respective container. Create a swirl in each container then dollop into the mold as you like. Remember not to overstir colorants (youʼll create a solid color), but instead move a spoon or spatula just a few strokes through the soap to swirl. Put finishing touches on top of the soap by drizzling extra colored soap or by designing a pattern of circles, Sʼs or whatever you would like to finish your creation. Whatʼs really stopping you from stepping away from work long enough to recharge your batteries and have a little fun? If youʼre convinced that the business canʼt run without you, or that you canʼt close your doors for a few days, itʼs probably just a sign that you are ill-prepared or disorganized. A solid and sustainable business model must be able to function and thrive if the business owner is not available three hundred and sixtyfive days a year. Perhaps itʼs time to take a look at what you can do differently so that you and your business can remain healthy and happy! Use this checklist to build a business model that can sustain itself in your absence, at least for a brief period of time. • Create documentation of workflow and processes so that employees are clear about what they do and how to handle most situations independently. • Let your customers, vendors, and other key contacts know that you will be gone and for how long. If you have employees, provide numbers to your assistant or other backup people. BUSINESS ARTICLE: HOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY TAKE TIME OFF FOR SPRING BREAK • No employees? Find someone who is willing to take emergency calls and properly “triage” them for you. A competent relative or friend who knows even a little about your business will be able to do this. By Marla Tabaka • Make a list of everything you need to get done to prepare for your time away. Begin well in advance and schedule time to remove tasks from your list each day. As an entrepreneur you love what you do, donʼt you? In fact, you are most likely a passion-driven individual who would never give up your business, right? • Look at production schedules well in advance and order any necessary supplies or goods ahead of time. This will allow you to get ahead of schedule (or stay on schedule) in preparation for your time away. If this sounds like you, welcome to the crowd! In fact, the Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index findings indicate that forty-seven percent of small business owners surveyed say if they won $10 million in the lottery, they would continue in their business. Only nine percent would stop working altogether, while eight percent would opt for a combination of work, pursuing other areas of interest, and volunteering. Wow, you are a part of one devoted group! • Call key clients a week or two before your sabbatical and ask if there is anything they need prior to your departure. This is also a great way to drum up extra business! • Make sure that important invoices and bills are paid, including liability insurance, rent, vendors, payroll, and utilities. But how much is too much? The problem is that too many entrepreneurs wonʼt step away from their business at all— not even for a few days. Sure, you love what you do but is working to the extent of burnout going to make you a better person? And does it serve the business in the way youʼd like to believe? Not really. In my experience as a coach the majority of business owners who work ten hour days and define a day off as being available for calls and emails (59 percent according to the same poll) do it for the control rather than out of necessity. But the truth is that with a little planning and a lot of courage most entrepreneurs can step away for a much needed break—and this is the perfect time of the year to make it happen! Go ahead, take the plunge! Preferably into a nice, warm ocean. But even if you take just one or two days away from your chaotic schedule you, your family, employees, and even your bottom line will thank you for it! Internationally known success coach and Inc. Sugar-based surfactants, however, are readily biodegradable and could represent a greener alternative to other dispersants. Some common sugar-derived surfactants are Decyl Glucoside, Lauryl Glucoside and Coco Glucoside. [3] Sugar Cane Extract is a natural source of alpha hydroxy acid (glycolic acid). It helps to even out skin tone, improve skin texture and minimize acne scarring by improving skin exfoliation and cell renewal. It can be found in exfoliating products (cleansers, toners, lotions or creams), targeted treatments for uneven and rough skin (knees, elbows and ankles) and skin brightening creams. [4] C-8 xylitol monoester [5], a molecule derived from the natural sugar xylitol, is being considered as an alternative co-preservative for cosmetic formulations and recent research on sulfo-carrabiose [6], a sugar-based cosmetic ingredient, showed favorable anti-cellulite properties. BUSINESS ARTICLE: Beyond the obvious use as a raw material in product formulation, sugar cane is also being used to create bio plastics. [7] The majority of plastics are derived from carbons found in crude oil. Bio plastics are produced from a biological source rather than petroleum. By Allison B. Kontur Sugar production will outpace consumption by 5 million metric tons in the 2014 season. [8] With such a massive supply and low demand, sugar is slated to be an economical and eco-friendly choice in both packaging and cosmetic product formulation. SUGAR, A SWEET TREAT FOR FORMULATORS Sugar (sucrose) is a carbohydrate present naturally in fruits and vegetables. All sugar products in the marketplace differ only in crystal size or molasses content. Molasses adds both color and flavor. The darker the brown sugar, the more molasses it contains. [1] The most common use of sugar in cosmetics is in sugar scrubs, but there are more skin benefits to sugar than you may think: Sugar is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin. Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that penetrates the skin and breaks down the “glue” that bonds skin cells. This process encourages faster cell turnover and provides fresher, younger-looking skin. Sugarʼs small particles make it an excellent topical exfoliant. A surprising cosmetic use of sugar is in epilation. Through a process called “sugaring” [2], a warm paste of granulated sugar, water and lemon juice is applied to the skin. Strips of cloth are pressed over the paste, then quickly torn off taking body hair with them. Granulated sugar, however, is not the only ingredient used in commercial skin care products. Derivatives from the sugar cane are now being synthesized into various raw materials with numerous skin benefits. You invest time and money into marketing products but when your audience doesnʼt respond in a way that you presumed, you donʼt just lose your investment; you lose time, energy, and resources that couldʼve been put to better use elsewhere. To mitigate the risk of such lost opportunity, incorporate a “build-measurelearn feedback loop” as advocated by The Lean Start Up into your project management process. The premise is simple: Before you make any financial investment to develop a new service or product, put it in front of a small test audience for feedback. The process can be as simple as sharing ideas around price, service, and concepts with your social media fans, and inviting their honest and detailed feedback. With this test and learn strategy, you may find that “problems” you thought customers wanted solved arenʼt what you thought—before you make any significant investment. (For example, a project management tool for a company that relies heavily on email should include a plug in to whatever email software is already used, so users arenʼt made to change their current work habits drastically). Much like the test and learn loop in The Lean Start Up, continually seek feedback from your team as to whatʼs working, and what needs improvement. Establish leaders at the project or product level, but invite any employee who is interested to collaborate in projects—regardless of their skill set and role in the company. Though this project management structure will require that you resist the urge to “micromanage,” youʼll likely find that employees become more proactive, and engaged in ensuring projects are completed successfully. By Stephanie Taylor Christensen What small business owner doesnʼt want to run a more profitable business with fewer expenses, and less stress? Here are three ways that you can begin to apply the power of project management to your business, starting today, to improve your bottom line. ALWAYS ASK WHY. Though The Lean Start Up began as a book by Eric Ries, the business management model quickly exploded into a movement all its own—particularly because of its appeal to entrepreneurs looking for ways to work smarter instead of harder. Though The Lean Start Up encompasses many methodologies, some are easily applied to any size of business for instant improvement to operations. The next time you face a business challenge, try the Lean Start Upʼs “Five Whyʼs” principle designed to arrive at the root cause of the problem—and to identify the real solution. Suppose for example, that youʼve experienced a high volume of returns with one particular product. Initially, you may assume a quality issue with the vendor. After conducting a five whyʼs analysis, however, you may arrive at an entirely different solution. Hereʼs an example of how it works: Stephanie Taylor Christensen is a former financial services marketer turned stay at home working mom, yoga instructor and freelance writer covering personal finance, small business, consumer issues, work-life balance and health/wellness topics for ForbesWoman, Minyanville , SheKnows, Mint , Intuit Small Business, Investopedia and several other online properties. Problem: Our product is returned frequently. 1-Why? Customers are disappointed once they receive it. 2-Why are customers disappointed? Itʼs not what they expect. 3-Why isnʼt it what they expect? If you think about that, youʼll do things differently.” QUICK DELIVERY Once the shipment leaves your business the delivery time may be completely out of your hands. However, the steps leading up to shipping is totally in your control. Be sure to only offer products that you immediately have available (custom orders excluded). We live in the age of immediacy. As soon as your customer places an order, they are already anticipating its arrival. Items that are out of stock or on back order dampen the customerʼs excitement and may reflect poorly on your business. BUSINESS ARTICLE: THINK LIKE A CUSTOMER By Catherine McGinnis What is it about your favorite cosmetic and soap supply company that keeps you coming back? Is it quality products? Is it friendly and courteous customer service? Is it quick delivery? Is it free shipping? All of the attributes that you appreciate in your go-to supplier should be what you strive to incorporate into your own business. Quality Products You only get one chance to make a first impression so make sure it is a good one. Think to yourself: Would I buy this product? If not, you may want to reevaluate. Create a checklist for shipping. Are all your products properly and neatly labeled? Many consumers have allergies that we are unaware of. Accurate labeling keeps you and your customers safe. Have you included a packing slip? Nearly everyone likes to check their order against an itemized list. A packing slip also serves as a register for you to double-check the order. Have you included free samples? There is nothing more appreciated by the customer than free product. This is also your opportunity to showcase upcoming products. Free samples act as a preview for the customer of what he/she can add to future orders. Lastly, have you included a personal note to the buyer? A short handwritten message to your customer puts the transaction on a personal level. Show your manners and grace with a sincere thank you. FRIENDLY AND COURTEOUS CUSTOMER SERVICE Is the customer really always right? No, but they like to think they are! Why should you be the one to tell them differently? It takes more time and effort to dispute their claim than it does to please the customer. Keep in mind that with so many other retail options available, the customer chose your company. Assure them that they made the right choice by being courteous and friendly. Not all transactions go smoothly. But if you can find a way to turn a negative into a positive, you have just gained a loyal customer for life. Keep your communications upbeat, enthusiastic and thorough. Your companyʼs reputation is worth more than you realize. As entrepreneur Warren Buffet said “It takes twenty years to build a reputation and HANDMADE EMAGAZINE • MARCH 20 14 32 Organize a shipping schedule and stick to it. Set aside a specific time each week dedicated only to packing and shipping. Quick turnaround time is a critical component in retaining loyal customers. The quicker the shipment leaves your business, the quicker it will get to its final destination; your waiting customer. FREE SHIPPING You may think that being a small business you cannot afford to offer free shipping but you can. Online customers are used to free or discounted shipping from leading merchants. Consumers tend to spend more when free shipping is offered. Whether it is due to a set minimum threshold (free shipping on orders of $50 or more) or the reason being because it is just how the human mind works. When we see the word “free” our mind goes a bit wild. We feel as if we are getting something for nothing and are more likely to shop without inhibitions. The secret to being able to afford free shipping is actually no secret at all, it is volume sales. The greatest amount of online shoppers will only purchase from merchants that offer free shipping. If you offer it, you can expect to gain new customers. You may fail to see the profits in the shortrun but consider the value of repeat customers. As consumers we know what we like. As retailers we can cater to the customersʼ wants and needs. It is not enough just to offer pretty products in pretty packaging. Online customers are accustomed to perks and you need to also be competitive. You cannot completely surrender to customers whims but you can incorporate these attributes that will keep them coming back. When in doubt, think like a customer.
