May Meeting Field Trip to Balboa Park
We will meet about 8:40am in our Serra Mesa/Kearny
Mesa Library parking lot and will provide drivers. We plan to
leave the library at 9:00am sharp.
Studio 21 doesn’t open until 11am, for those arriving early,
you’re invited to the Timken Museum of Art opening at
10am. Jack Evans, a Docent at the Timken, will host a
short tour of the museum with a sampling of paintings. We
will head over to Studio 21, in Spanish Village Art Center
(SVAC), in time to arrive by 11am. There you will find our
president Bobbie Bradford and the newly installed exhibition
Contemporary French Ceramics. We will have a short
meeting, on the patio, and discuss our October show. You’ll
have plenty of time to check out “The Patio’s” many activities and draw-able scenes.
Why, you ask, are we doing this? The theme of our 23th
Annual Exhibition is Balboa Park. We urge you to bring
your camera, sketch book, pencils, water, and maybe a
folding chair. Lunches too!
Then find your favorite subject, and draw Balboa Park!!
This is your jump start for October 6th, 2015, when we will
be accepting your fabulous colored pencil artworks for our
show “Color in the Park: Balboa Park - Past, Present &
Future”. Let’s create community and do what we do
best...draw and paint with colored pencils.

P.S.
We have exhibited at Gallery 21 for many years, and in reading their Mission
Statement, we seem to be in the right place to have thousands of visitors. As in
past years if you have reproductions (prints, giclees, cards, etc.) you could not
find a better location to exhibit them.
Gallery 21 Mission Statement: To provide and Enhance New and Emerging San
Diego County Artists regardless of Trends, Styles, or Media with a high Quality Art Gallery for first time exhibitions and locally recognized Groups and Organizations holding
Open Shows. Additionally it is stated: “We encourage artists who have never exhibited
with us to apply. We encourage one national/international exhibition per year. We are
pleased to offer this outreach gallery at a nominal fee”.

JUNE • SD COUNTY FAIR
This year our little chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of
America has become very ambitious! Yes, we want the
world to know about our group and the dynamic, fascinating
and influential work we have been creating. Our chapter
has reserved Studio 21, in Spanish Village, for an entire
month long show, in October, to show OUR art.
“Student Showcase Awards”
DC202 has the honor of judging the
“Student Showcase” for colored pencil.
Carolyn needs a few members to judge

Two ways you can help, your choice:
1. Donate any monetary amount you wish.

and make payments monthly. Our treasurer, Teresa
Rodriguez-Ross has volunteered to do the tally for this
endeavor. Contact her at [email protected].
JUNE SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR
It takes a village to raise an art group. These funds will help
to cover extra costs as a result of our exuberant ambitions.

per shift. If interested, contact Bobbie

"Want to be more prolific...let go of the art you have. Sell it or give it
away, you’ll produce more."
Carmen LaGrie
I wanted to produce more art. I was putting out a couple of
pieces a year. I said to myself, "Well, my art is large and colored
pencils are very time consuming, perhaps I should simply draw
smaller images. Nope, that did not work for me. I do not feel my
work is best expressed when small and I do not "feel" my work
when working small.
I had to put my thinking cap on. I could join a group! I joined the
CPSA. This helped to keep me on track with like minded people.
I needed more, I joined a weekly artist work group. Things were
improving, I was now putting out more pieces yearly, but was this
my full potential?
One day my friend said, "you are a natural born teacher." Am I? I
began to share my talents, knowledge and life with others. This
changed my own life! I am giving what I have and learning a lot
about art and myself in the process. Huh. Giving is a gift you
unknowingly give to yourself.
Having students has made me more prolific. Helping others with
their projects helps me pay more attention to my own. I have the
desire to work on my projects more often. The artist part of me
has become a greater priority since I have students.
Today, I am abundant with art. I am a prolific artist...this is
good...very, very good!
Be happy, Blade♥

1. Find out he name of your local town/community newspaper or
newsletter such as, The Ramona Sentinel, The La Jolla Light,
etc. Get the email address of the person who is in charge of
publishing current events in the community
2. Select the digital images of your work that you want to be
published in these periodicals.
3. Finally, email this information (#1-2) to our Bobbie Bradford
for safe keeping at [email protected].
If you decide to accept this assignment...our group will be able to
send out a “prepared” press release 3 weeks prior to our workshop and exhibit. Usually the interested reporter will then ask us
to email images to be published.
This is an exciting opportunity to let our public know what we
have been up to. Let’s get our images out there and show the
world what colored pencils can do!!!!

The benefits of volunteering are enormous to you. Volunteers are the glue that holds any non profit group together.
Even helping with the smallest task can make a real difference. Dedicating your time helps you to make new friends,
expand your network and strengthen social skills.
Researchers have found that volunteering is good for your
mind and body. It can provide a healthy boost to your selfconfidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Your role as a
volunteer can give you a natural sense of accomplishment,
pride and identity.
Reducing the risk of depression is another important
benefit of volunteering. It keeps you in regular contact with
others and helps you develop a solid support system. This
protects you against stress and depression when you are
going through challenging times.
Did you know volunteering is good for your health? Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not. It has also been shown to
lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease.
Finally, helping others kindles
happiness. The London School
of Economics found that the
more any person volunteered,
the happier they were!
