The Problem with Feeding Cats Outdoors Cats make wonderful pets when they are kept indoors. Cats that are kept indoors do not prey on songbirds; cats that are kept indoors are fed indoors, where other animals —especially raccoons —cannot access their food. Cats that are kept indoors do not defecate and do not spread parasites contagious to people throughout the environment. There are five serious public health concerns associated with outdoor cats: two are related to raccoons that are drawn to cat food and three are related to parasites in cat feces. 1. Rabies is a fatal disease. In the past eighteen months, Volusia County has had six positive rabies cases: 4 cats and 2 raccoons. When food is left outside for cats, raccoons will find it. The raccoon is Florida’s wildlife reservoir for rabies. No self-respecting raccoon will turn down cat food - not even in the daytime. So these typically nocturnal animals will become active in the daytime if they know that food is available. Did you know that it costs over $5,000.00 to go through the post-exposure series of rabies inoculations if you are bitten by a raccoon or a rabid cat? If an innocent resident - or their visiting grandchild - is bitten, who will pay for it? The feral cat feeders? The homeowners’ association? Rabies vaccination is required by law for all cats and dogs in Florida. Can the feeders provide documentation that the cats that are roaming outdoors can be identified with a microchip and are current on rabies vaccinations? Note that the three-year vaccines only provide three years of immunity when given as a booster; they only provide only one year of immunity when given as an initial inoculation. 2. Baylisascaris : The raccoon roundworm. This was first reported in Volusia County in September 2013 at a business off of Nova Road in Port Orange. If humans accidentally eat something that is contaminated with raccoon feces (like a child who might put a piece of infected bark in his mouth), the results can be devastating. This parasite prefers the nervous system and the larvae continue to increase in size as they migrate. Most of the 30 cases diagnosed in the United States have been fatal; those who survived had severe neurologic impairment. By the time a person has symptoms severe enough to go to the doctor, the disease is already advanced. 3. Hookworms [AncylostomaJ: “Creeping Eruption” (Cutaneous Larva Migrans). Anything that eats will poop. Cats that are fed outside will poop outside and cats that poop outside will distribute parasites throughout the environment. Outdoor cat feces have an 80% chance of having parasites that are transmissible to humans. This is what hookworm larvae look like when they get under human skin. Outdoor cats use mulch - and golf course sand traps - as a latrine. Is this an acceptable risk for the people who maintain the beautiful grounds and the golf course for Crane Lakes? 4. Roundworms [Toxocara]: (Ocular Larva Migrans)If a person accidentally gets something in their mouth that is contaminated with roundworm eggs from cat feces, and if the larvae migrate to the eyes, blindness can result. 5. The Epidemiology Division of the Volusia County Health Department can be contacted at 386-2740634 for further information. 6. From the Port Orange Municipal Code [Online content updated January 14, 2015]: Section 10-11. Regulation of animals. 7. No animal shall be permitted or allowed to run at large. It is a violation of this chapter for the owner of an animal to permit or allow the animal to run at large. 8. No animal shall be permitted or allowed to cause a nuisance. It is a violation of this chapter for the owner of an animal to permit or allow the animal to cause a nuisance. 9. No animal shall be permitted or allowed to defecate or urinate upon any public property or upon any private property without permission of the property owner. It is a violation of this chapter for the owner of an animal to permit or allow the animal to defecate or urinate upon any public property or upon any private property without permission of the property owner. 10. The feces of any animal deposited upon any public property, or upon any private property without permission of the property owner, shall be promptly removed and disposed of. It is a violation of this chapter for the owner of an animal to refuse or fail to remove and dispose of any feces of the animal deposited upon any public property or upon any private property without permission of the property owner. Our first order of business was the formal induction of the 2015-16 Board Members. We offer special congratulations and “thank you” to our two new Board Members, Bob Baker and Dennis McCombs. City Councilman, Bob Ford, lead the Board members, as they took the oath of office. We appreciated him taking time to help us with the installation of our officers and directors. The Board also recognized the service o f Bill Carpenter and Terry Terranera, our outgoing members. We value the time and talent they gave to the HOA Board and Community. Thank you to all who attended the meeting. We look forward to continued attendance and participation from our 445 HOA members. The Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Andy Edwards as the coordinator of our Annual Toy Drive. She has been our liaison with the Fire Department in this effort for the past 14 years. It is primarily because of her hard work and dedication that this event has been so successful. Andy was able identify the specific needs of many o f the children. She always added her personal touch. Her home often looked like Santa’s workshop! We will miss her leadership. Typical o f Andy, she has offered to help whoever takes over this position. Please contact Andy or an HOA Board member if you would be willing to organize and coordinate this event. A great big thank-you goes out to Bob and Iris Obie who chaired Trash to Treasure. The event was very successful. Vendors and buyers had positive comments. A lot of “trash” was turned into treasure. Thanks also to all who coordinated and baked for the Bake Sale. Several questions were raised regarding the grounds and facilities. The HOA Board will voice these at our May meeting with the management team. Crane Lakes Management has authorized hiring several individuals to help monitor the pools, during peak times. You can help by remembering to lock the pool gates, accompanying your guests when they use the facilities and reporting to management non-resident use when you observe it. Thank you to Tom Silk and Dave DeWeil for volunteering to host the “Mystic Dancers” in June. Please refer to the article in this Courier for details. The HOA will once again be sponsoring a July 4th BBQ. Tickets will go on sale at the end o f May. Please check this courier for details. Please note that the May Board o f Director’s Meeting will be held on April 27th, due to Board member conflicts. On April 29th the Board members and several volunteers will be cleaning out the storage closet and moving many items to the storage shed. Farewell for now to our “snowbirds. We look forward to your return and encourage you to become HOA members this fall. The Roost Bar and Grill The Roost is pleased td announce the hiring of our new Guest Services Manager, Sharon LaScola. Nicki helped last year with shopping, and has thought this over and decided she wanted to be able to “give back”, and this was the perfect way for her to accomplish this mission. CHANGE OF THE GUARD It is with a heavy heart, I have decided not to run The Annual Toy Drive for the Port Orange Dept. Having started this wonderful service 16 years ago, with the first 2 years going to a local church which sponsored the toys for Urban Renewal. After doing this for 2 years, I asked the HOA Board if they would like to s p o n s o r the P o rt Orange Dept, keeping the toys in Port Orange. It has been a wonderful experience being able to help these fine folks out for 14 years. Thank You to all of the wonderful Crane Lakes Residents who have generously given to this cause each and every year. This has been my “baby” and loved every minute shopping, keeping each family straight, and packing the bags each year. I took off 2 years for health reasons, and had expert help taking over during that time. Nicki and her husband Bill moved into Crane Lakes last August. They are a very nice couple, learning about our beautiful Community, and having “fun” golfing. When you see them, please let them know how much you appreciate Nicki stepping up and taking on the Toy Drive. Thank You again for always being there for me, please be sure you support Nicki as you have me all these years. Love, Andy Edwards THE QUILTING CRANES A new group has been formed for your enjoyment! The Quilting Cranes meet in the Ballroom on Thursdays 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Call Molly 492-2867 Or Kathy 265-4760 This Thank You note had been sent in for the February Courier, but it got Lost in the system. Many apologies to all who worked so hard on this event. It is most important to let folks know how much they are appreciated, sorry this happened. Andy NEW YEARS EVE EXTRAVAGANZA THANK YOU Thanks to all who joined us in this extravagant evening. All of the feedback that we received was it was one of the best New Years Eve Parties they had been to in Crane Lakes. Our caterers were AJC (Amber's Jewel Catering). They were the 4 time winner in News Journal Best Caterer. They did a spectacular job. There was plenty of food and it was served at your table by their waitresses and waiters. We did not have to get up from our tables to get anything including ice. Mondo Music Entertainment Company was our DJ for the evening, He also did a fantastic job. He kept people up dancing most of the evening with a big variety of music. If you can imagine, almost everyone stayed till after midnight as he performed until 12:30 AM. Thanks to James Schisler for providing our dinner music. I don't know what we would do without him. He is always so willing to step in and help. Elaine and I would like to give a special "Thanks" to MaryLou McIntyre and Lynn Nolan, who were there every week selling tickets, and Judy Malcolm for helping with the food sign-up for the dinners. This commitment takes a lot of time and they were so much appreciated. Also another special "Thanks" to Wif Lesperance for helping us decorate. Thanks also to Carol Tevis, Wif and Dick Lesperance and my husband Bert for selling our Share the Wealth Tickets for the evening. We had many happy winners. Thanks to Pat Dugan who took many pictures including individual pictures of each couple during the course of the evening. They can be viewed on the Crane Lakes Web Site. I will also try to display them in the Ballroom. Thanks to Diane Davenport, MaryAnn and Jerry Dougherty, Iris Eschich, Ron and Jerrie Batson for helping us with clean up. It goes so much faster with great help. Barb Risdon and Elaine Maita There were a few items left after the party. 1. Black Ice Bucket 2. A pair of shoes 3. A Black and Silver Sweater Cape 4. We sold 5 homes in January, 6 homes in February, 6 again in March and 4 so far in April! Two interesting success stories to share with you during April are; 1) we listed a home that had failed to sell while listed through another agency. When the homeowner’s agreement expired they listed with us. We showed the home 4 times & sold it to one o f our clients in just one day! 2) Second, we received an email from another outside agency on their listing with a reduced asking price. They asked if we could assist them in getting the word out on this change to our clients. We ended up showing this home multiple times that day & selling it w/i 24 hours! We were proud to help out in this sale. Our traffic through the sales office continues to be steady and we continue to maintain a current list of over 20 active clients that wish to be called as new listings come on in our office that might match their needs. So, if you are considering relocating sometime during 2015, this is an excellent time for you to consider contacting our office for a free market evaluation with no obligation from you. Average sales price continues to be on the steady rise but still have not rebounded to where they were years ago. The vast majority o f our clients are still heavily weighted towards the $70-$ 100k listings, with several clients still waiting for larger garage homes on the golf course or water locations too. If you have any family or friends that are considering buying a Florida home in the near future ask them to keep us in mind to be future residents here in beautiful Crane Lakes! We try very hard to always keep our listings current on www.cranelakes.com (under the “Buy a home” tab). Our May referral program remains at $100 to residents who refers anyone to us that buys a home here during May that is paid after the closing takes place.
